Gameday Thread, #35: 5/12 vs Cardinals

Juan Cruz, RHP (1-0, 2.05)
Mark Mulder, LHP (3-1, 4.44)

This series, we face the reigning National League Central champions, though so far, they're only 2 1/2 games up on us and have been good, but not awesome. Cruz has been excellent in his two starts so far, while Mulder has been merely okay, as that ERA would suggest. Of course, the Cardinals have perhaps the best hitter in baseball. I refer, naturally, to catcher Yadier Molina, whose .168 average is merely a cunning plan to lull opposing teams into a false sense of security.

I've heard their first baseman is not too bad as well.

Here's just one stat for you in that department. Pujols' 18 home runs are the same as our entire infield combined. Not just starters: all nine of them, including both catchers, and backups Tony Clark, Andy Green and Damion Easley. How we deal with him - or he with us - so goes the series, I reckon. Speaking of first base, we sidestep one left-hander in the shape of Oliver Perez, courtesy of the weather, only to run smack into another one, in the shape of Mulder. Does this mean another start for Tony Clark on the bag? Brace yourselves for impact, folks.
