Lohse (5-3, 4.25)
Vazquez (5-4, 4.38)
Here's hoping for something better tonight - and with Vazquez on the mound, my Magic Baseball 8-Ball is optimistic. "Signs point to YES," it says, encouragingly. Should be a little closer, with no particular Twins edge for about the only time this series.
Lohse and Vazquez have very similar records so far: Javy has one more loss and a 0.13 higher ERA. We might actually get a base on balls this game - our first against the Twins this year - since Lohse is, by Minnesota standards, wild, with a whole eleven walks in 55.0 innings pitched. Vazquez, of course, is still on his lengthy walkless streak.
As noted previously, tonight's first pitch will be thrown out by the actor who played Pedro in Napoleon Dynamite, which kinda sums up the glamourous appeal of Arizona in June. The Padres get Anna Kournikova, we get one of the lead geeks from the geekiest movie of 2004. Let's hope he doesn't snog any of our players at least.
But hey, if that's what it takes to win...because we need one, by any means possible. Combined with a Padres loss, that would, remarkably, keep us 2 1/2 games off the lead on the NL West, despite our recent awful record. However, a defeat would leave us teetering on the edge of .500 - and would also leave us only six games above our record at the same stage in 2004. And we all know how that ended up...
