The Contrarian: Billy Beane is Merely Adequate

"The A's have put the finishing touches on a trade to net them All World outfielder Matt Holliday. So far the reaction from the baseball analyst community has been predictable: near-universal praise. And why shouldn't it be? Godman Billy Beane made the deal, after all. How Godman is he? Well, with Moneyball optioned for film, Brad Pitt is likely to play Beane. The man deals shirtless? We hope so! roster

Currently, we only have 33 names on the 40 man roster. There may be a few that are added shortly but 7 open spots seems a little high.

Maybe we will be looking to pick up a player or two in the upcoming Rule 5 draft?

What happened to the $300 mil...

(or so)...that "MLB" made on the sale of the Expos?

http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005/01/washington-nationals_01.html

A group led by Ted Lerner bought the Nationals for $450M in May, 2006.
Major League Baseball had purchased the franchise formerly known as the Expos for $120M in 2002.

Why are we so right handed???

If JB is such great a GM then why do we have a team that is so heavy on the RHB side??

If we lose O-Dawg we will probably get even more right handed.  Trade CJ for what ever we can get for some LHB.He's a poor defensive 1b and ...at best...an average defensive lf that can't hit more than 12-15 bombs.

Approx. 75% of our PAs will be against RHPs.

We neeed LHB's

Great roster contruction...JB.

All RHBs.  give me a freaking break!!!

Edgar vs. Max et. al.

Max was sent to Tucson yesterday to make room for Buckner. We needed a fresh arm due to the work load that our 'pen has encountered lately.

Taking into account EdGon's performance and the lack of flexibility that we have due to him being out of options, how much value does he really bring to our club?

We have  Buckner, Scherzer, Petit, Peguero among others, that have options and can be rotated between Tucson and the big club. Their YTD performance is at least equal to if not better than EdGon's and the flexibility they allow enables us to keep fresh arms in the 'pen on a regular basis.

If the FO could get anything of value for Edgar, I would advocate trading him. I really don't feel that he'll ever be a highly effective pitcher especially at the BOB.

Melvin expects defense to improve

Geez, let's hope so. We sure have had more than our share of defensive miscues so far this year. And many of ours have been very damaging. I wouldn't be surprised if we lead the league in unearned runs. From the article

Only four teams in the National League have a higher error total than the D-backs' 37.

The D-backs have tried a number of things to improve the defense, including having coaches bring different positions onto the field for work before batting practice, going so far as having a coach flip a pitch to the one hitting rather than just hitting fungoes.

I'm always a supporter of practice but it sure looks like we could use more.

Also an interesting subject regarding the fan base...

According to Nielsen Media Research, from March 31 - May 22, FSN Arizona was the top-rated television network in Phoenix on the nights it televised a D-backs game, outdistancing all four broadcast stations in the market (7 - 11 p.m., Monday - Sunday). An average of 90,310 households in the Valley were watching FSN Arizona on nights it has a D-backs game during primetime hours. ...

Are baseball stats true science?

From today's game thread...

There are exponentially more variables to baseball then there are to coin tosses.

Baseball stats are not the law of gravity, true probability theory ( ie. a coin toss, a dice roll, etc) or physics.

To compare baseball stats to true science is, IMO, a very far stretch.

I do believe that the "truest" that baseball stats can come to reality  is platoon stats but they are still far from perfect.

Byrnes to DL: Romero gets the call

PHOENIX (AP)—The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed left fielder Eric Byrnes on the 15-day disabled because of sore hamstrings.

The injury has bothered the Arizona outfielder since spring training, manager Bob Melvin said when the move was announced Tuesday, and the decision was made that rest was required. Byrnes had struggled at the plate, hitting just .219 with six home runs and 23 RBIs. Alex Romero was recalled from Triple-A Tucson to take Byrnes’ spot on the roster.

With the return of Tracy and the addition of Romero, we sure got a lot more left handed the last two days.

Ground rules

Ground rules in baseball are always important to understand. I'm somewhat new to this forum and would like to understand the ground rules at "this park." At times, it seems that snark directed specifically toward other posters is not only allowed but encouraged. Is that the case?

What are the "ground rules?"

Thanks

Thou shalt not steal

Here's an article about our team's philosophy regarding stealing bases.

"We want the reward to outweigh the risk," Gibson said.

The risk side of the equation is cluttered with factors, including the time it takes a pitcher to deliver a pitch, the catcher's arm strength, a pitcher's move to first, the count, the situation, a runner's technique and confidence factor, and everything in between.
