Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Gameday Thread: 3/28 vs Rockies

Not sure if anyone will really be up for this after the news today about Davis - yet, he's still pitching this evening. Can't help wondering where his head will be - or, indeed, how long he has known, before it became public today? But, if he can pitch, than we can still watch and cheer. Let's go D-backs, and in particular, Doug Davis.

Alex Romero gets the 25th spot... go rookie! (He's a rookie, right?)

by snakecharmer on Mar 28, 2008 9:05 PM EDT reply actions

Solid first for Doug
A two-out double, though no damage done.

It's probably wrong to admit this, but I bet I wasn't the only one staring at his neck in the first inning.

Davis
I missed the pre-game --- did they already have press conf with doctor or will that be after the game?

by dstorm on Mar 28, 2008 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions

According to Nick Piecoro
"Davis isn't going to talk until after the game, and apparently they're going to have the team doctor, Michael Lee, available and have another specialist for us to talk to, as well."

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

He was totally on
I was watching his face... a little uneasy, but strong in the eyes.

by snakecharmer on Mar 28, 2008 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

same here ---
good to see O-Dawg back in the line-up -- not good to see him sliding into 2nd base hand first

by dstorm on Mar 28, 2008 9:24 PM EDT reply actions

OMG
OKAY, not so sharp any more...

by snakecharmer on Mar 28, 2008 9:33 PM EDT reply actions

Back-to-back-to-back
But I can't say he actually looks "bad". The first one was a good pitch that the hitter just got to - the next two were poorly located, but how often do those get hit out of the park? He comes back nicely, with back-to-back strikeouts.

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 9:37 PM EDT reply actions

Ex-D'back pitching for Colorado
In Matt Herges. 8 innings for us, back in 2005. Starts off by hitting the first batter, Chris Snyder. However, Reynolds hammers the ball to third and they go round the horn for a double-play. Pretty to see; less pleasant to have inflicted on you.

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 9:42 PM EDT reply actions

left side of Rockies defense is just plain awesome
As much as I hate to say it about a rival -- I love watching Tulo play

by dstorm on Mar 28, 2008 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I love
watching Tulo play too.
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

I see
Purple Row has gone over to SB Nation 2.0. We're confirmed for moving, probably early Sunday morning.

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 9:45 PM EDT reply actions

It's pretty nice
Automated update is cool, the new layout takes some getting used to, and occasionally I run into various snags, but it's on the whole a good upgrade. Still, being the kind of person that I am, I miss the old platform a bit. It felt comfortable.
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

YAY!
Boo to PR being before us :P but goody! Can't wait to learn more about the new system. Don't worry Jim, I'll be careful. 0:-)

by snakecharmer on Mar 28, 2008 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Signing up for 2.0...
I went to register.  Found out Devin is unavailable, but apparently the Purple Row name I'd forgotten I'd had was reserved for me?  A bit bizarre, I'd say.

Though I was amused at the disclaimers for the sites.  Purple Row had something official, with a link to rules and regulations, while the Snakepit (and Brew Crew Ball, another account I'd forgotten) just told me not to be mean.  Fair enough!

I'm not superstitious- it's bad luck.

by kishi on Mar 28, 2008 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Aw darn
Are you sure you couldn't have kept him around a little longer, just so you could run him out against us once in a while?

Doh! And Nippert's wife gave birth THIS MORNING. :(

by snakecharmer on Mar 28, 2008 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Must say...
On this showing - four home runs in 2.1 innings - it might be better to let Davis go and have his surgery now.

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 9:52 PM EDT reply actions

Man
you'd think the Rockies would be more respectful of it... he's probably had a bad enough day without this on top of it. At least it doesn't count. (Good thing and bad thing both).
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

by Silverblood on Mar 28, 2008 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes please,
go ahead and get all those home-runs out of the way NOW....

by dstorm on Mar 28, 2008 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Don't worry
there will be many, MANY more to come...

[evil cackle]

Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

by Silverblood on Mar 28, 2008 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

by the way....
Saw the "21 Days" special on Fox Sports Rocky Mountain the other night --- Very well done... I couldn't believe some of the "inside" stories that were part of the Streak... The one with the Hurdle and the boy that passed away... and all the events that surrounded it was amazing.

Also learned quite a bit about Hurdle I didn't know (personally) - it was well done --- When you stand back and look at the whole thing it really is amazing -- something I'm sure Rockies fans will never forget....

by dstorm on Mar 28, 2008 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

It was very special indeed
and at times almost made me cry. But we need to repeat to keep October 2007 from becoming something besides our favorite memory.
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

by Silverblood on Mar 28, 2008 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd rather them not
At some point, yes, but I don't think Doug would want the Rockies to let him off the hook for the distraction. :)

by snakecharmer on Mar 28, 2008 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Upton
Will be having words with Drew about not cutting off his throws, I think.

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 9:56 PM EDT reply actions

And Reynolds... and O'Dawg...
The entire infield was aghast.

If they were Away, Drew would most definitely be on the Media Bus.

".. and a really large human"
Ha, I think I missed Grace.

But, yeah, the man is big..

by snakecharmer on Mar 28, 2008 9:59 PM EDT reply actions

I see
The Rockies are still just as lucky as they were last season. :-( As with the home runs, best get that out of the way now...

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 10:02 PM EDT reply actions

Oh no
They're not getting them out of the way, they're just showing ya what you're in for. ;-)
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

by Silverblood on Mar 28, 2008 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think
I've ever heard such a loud ovation for a starting pitcher who just gave up four homers and eight earned runs in 2.2 innings. But entirely justified.

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 10:05 PM EDT reply actions

We've got a Woody!
That's our new pitcher, of course. ;-) Hey, I could have said, "Bob Melvin just gave us a Woody"...

Goiny by the crowd
Or lack thereof at Chase, it appears we're already fed-up with seeing the Rockies. :-)

funny
I was about to comment it looked pretty good for a Friday night spring training game.....

by dstorm on Mar 28, 2008 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Well...
Except for the fact that 15,000 season ticket holders all had to buy tickets for tonight and tomorrow as part of their package. Guess which games were picked 82nd and 83rd in our draft? :-)

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions

The new scoreboard
Looks very nice. And very large.

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 10:12 PM EDT reply actions

And another ex-D'back
In Luis Vizcaino. 65.1 innings for us in 2006.

You can have him back. Trust me.
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

I'd like to take this time to say
G-d, I hate the freakin' Rockies.
Stay grindy, my friends.

you know what would be great.....
is if on opening day, right in the middle of the Rockies first telecast, we could somehow hijack FSN and run the season premier of the Eric Byrnes Show....

by Silverblood on Mar 28, 2008 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

So
Are you guys worried about Lyon? I'm not being snarky, I'm actually curious as to your reaction to the Valverde trade at this point. Granted, it still doesn't count, but a 14.04 ERA from your prospective ninth-inning guy is a little worrisome.
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

by Silverblood on Mar 28, 2008 10:27 PM EDT reply actions

Pena will ultimately be our closer IMO
Yes, I think he's a great set-up man but worried about closing role

by dstorm on Mar 28, 2008 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

He'll be okay
You don't actually need to be that "good" to be a decent closer. And if he fails, we have Pena or Qualls who can easily step up. Not an area of concern.

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Pena
made us look foolish in the NLCS last year. So, my advice: Keep Lyon.
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

by Silverblood on Mar 28, 2008 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Ouch
Five homers for the Rockies, and we are only in the fourth. Know how many five-homer games we had last year?

That would be "one."

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 10:27 PM EDT reply actions

Gracies just call the West for the Rockies
relax Grace, it's just a pre-arranged batting practice we're witnessing tonight -- no biggie

by dstorm on Mar 28, 2008 10:27 PM EDT reply actions

I enjoyed listening to him

It is exactly what you would expect The Eric Byrnes Show to be.

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

if we're lucky
they're pre-empt this game and show a re-run.....

by dstorm on Mar 28, 2008 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I enjoy it
but then, I really enjoy Eric's personality and his enthusiasm and his wackiness.

by snakecharmer on Mar 28, 2008 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Snyder looking good
Continues his monster spring with a double. He could be primed for a monster season, as a hitting catcher.

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 10:34 PM EDT reply actions

agreed
both him and Jackson have impressed me quite a bit so far this spring

by dstorm on Mar 28, 2008 10:36 PM EDT reply actions

Uh....
I have this feeling you guys are going to enjoy seeing Fuentes this year.
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

by Silverblood on Mar 28, 2008 10:38 PM EDT reply actions

Upton just got served
A full-count change-up sends him back to the dugout, carrying his bat. I think he learned something there.

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 10:41 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah!
A cross between Delucci and Jackson.

by snakecharmer on Mar 28, 2008 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Could be here all night
It's already been 1:35 and we're still only in the bottom of the fourth, as Hurdle heads to the mound for another pitching change.

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 10:44 PM EDT reply actions

Which is a relief
As I am sure you all enjoyed the immediately preceding episode of "Brian Fuentes: Yep, Still Bad" more than I did.
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

by Silverblood on Mar 28, 2008 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Inclined to think
Drew...Though if Hudson is in the two-hole, they may want to keep the two left-handed capable hitters further apart. We don't really have one, any more than we have a lead-off hitter. Could end up being Snyder?

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

good point.....
what about Reynolds?  I agree if Drew doesn't improve over last year he may end up there....

by dstorm on Mar 28, 2008 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

You're just jealous
that you won't be able to wear sandals in Denver until July ;)

by dstorm on Mar 28, 2008 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I actually got to wear sandals

And then it snowed.

Juan Cruz
Frickin' awesome. That first K was just brutal. And the second was every bit as wrong.

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 10:54 PM EDT reply actions

Reggie Sanders!
Looks like he'll be partnering Phelps on the post-game show this year. That shirt is either the best or the worst-ever. I'm not sure which...

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 10:59 PM EDT reply actions

Medders in
Having basically nailed down his position on the roster, with the departure of Nippert. Wonder what difference that will make to proceedings?

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 11:16 PM EDT reply actions

Jailen Peguero working well
I know the backups are in the game, but since Davis left, our bullpen has allowed one hit in 4.1 innings of work.

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 11:31 PM EDT reply actions

It's not TOO hard to
shut down our scrubs, but yes, it's good work.
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

by Silverblood on Mar 28, 2008 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup
Believe it or not, Hurdle announced a competition between Tulo and Barmes last year for the starting SS job. I shudder to think what might have happened if that had turned out differently.

Needless to say, that didn't happen this year.

Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

by Silverblood on Mar 28, 2008 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, look...
Eric Byrnes pops out on the infield with a runner on third.

Add that to the list of things we want to get out of our system before Opening Day.

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 11:38 PM EDT reply actions

Well
not a whole lot more to say about this game.... I think I'm going to log off for the night

That Matt Holliday STILL has not touched home plate ;)

We shall call him George
So he will be "George" A. Romero.

But remembering how many at-bats Hammock got last April, I wouldn't be expecting too much action this season, Alex.

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 11:53 PM EDT reply actions

Awful frinking call.
Umpires must want to get away. He was almost into the outfield by the time that double-play throw arrived at first.

by Jim McLennan on Mar 28, 2008 11:55 PM EDT reply actions

At this point
I am tempted to call upon an up and coming writing prospect and head for the showers, as the Rockies pile on against our B-minus prospects.

by Jim McLennan on Mar 29, 2008 12:09 AM EDT reply actions

Not me, right? :)
'Cause I don't know if I can put a positive spin on this one..

by snakecharmer on Mar 29, 2008 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions

It'd be a challenge.
But hey, in the newspaper business, we find a way to make it work. Or just stick with the "bleeds=leads" principle and say the hell with it.

If for some reason you were looking for someone else to do a recap, Jim, I could always toss my name in the hat. Just a thought.
