Gameday Thread: 3/19 vs. Seattle

Tonight's game is on TV, on Fox Sports AZ, as well as mlb.tv. I'm at The Sets for our open-mic comedy show, but if I lean back and squint, I can see the TV where the game is playing. Of course, I could just move seats across the bar, but to watch the game, I'd basically have to turn my back on comedians. Which would not be nice. But we'll see: if anyone else feels like commenting, have a thread. Tonight's lineup:

  • Young, CF .238
  • Jackson, 1B .326
  • Hudson, 2B .355
  • Byrnes, LF .344
  • Snyder, C .370
  • Reynolds, 3B .222
  • Drew, SS .194
  • Upton, RF .297
  • Owings, P
Stats are the spring training ones so far. I think I'd be phenomenally happy with about five of those batting averages in the regular season. Young, Reynolds and - it seems almost inevitably - Drew, could do with pulling their socks up. But it basically looks like a full-strength lineup for the D-backs tonight.

Okay...
Some slight re-arrangement later, and I am now facing the television from a location which will allow me to see both the TV and the comedians. I am quite some distance from the television however, so comments could be on the level of "some guy in a D-backs shirt did something which appears to be quite good." If you're looking for deep analysis, this might not be your night.

First plug for the season ticketathon. :-)

Nice start by Young
Double down the line on a 2-0 pitch. Jackson follows with a single to left, and there's men on the corners with no-one out. Interesting to see Jackson hitting ahead of Hudson in the order. Maybe just a trial run, but no harm in it.

Hudson joins the hit parade
Slaps one through the infield for the first-run and move Jackson to third. Byrnes, with a chance to drive the runner home...

Or...
Hudson's hit was actually an error.

Told you I'm a bit far from the TV. :-)

Long at-bat for Byrnes
Seattle pitcher keeps throwing over to first, and a bunch of fouls help run the count full, before EB takes a ball down and inside for a walk. Bases loaded, still no-one out.

Snyder with the bases juiced.
Now...not so much, after Snyder grounds into a double-play. Let's just say, whatever Jackson was doing to speed up over the winter, was clearly not in effect for Snyder. :-( Still, the run scores from third, though Special K ends the inning with a K.

Nice try by Reynolds
On a ball down the third-base line, took him deep into foul territory before he could turn and throw, but you ain't gonna throw Ichiro out on one of those.

DIAMONDBACKS BASEBALL
SOOOOOO EXCITED.

And of * course * this would be the day I can only watch 'til 8 because my TiVO is scheduled to record two other programs. :-/

Owings coughs it up
Three runs in the first. A bit of bad luck - one bloop that was perfectly-placed, but a couple of hard-hit balls as well. On spring form, I'm glad shoe didn't agree to my ERA bet on Owings!

Another ticketathon plug. :-)

I'm worried about Owings
Ever since he batted 7th, he's had this shoulder soreness... I know they're not directly correlated, but I agree with people who say he's a pitcher first, batter second.

LOL
You know technology is becoming overpowering when you have to think about buying a second Tivo, in case you want to record three program simultaneously. :-)

Following it on mlb.com
And Owning is not looking good at all... If this continues we may have to seriously consider having Ed Gon as our no. 5 starter. Or is he testing something that I'm not aware of this spring?

I'm with you...
Back after a chicken quesadilla. The "It's just spring training" argument only goes so far. Of course, it is possible for a pitcher to come back, but Owings only has two more starts left - and his ERA is still in double figures...

Not paying attention during my lecture...
In any case, I think the Dbacks will give him a few starts to see if this trend continues... only then would we pull him should he continues to struggle. And then convert him to a outfielder or something... (see Ankiel) ;-)

Just to soothe...
Last spring, Hernandez 2.0 had a 13.07 ERA and Doug Davis was at 9.00.

Okay, maybe that wasn't so soothing. :-( Brandon Webb, 6.35 in Spring 2006. There you go. That's better!

Chris Young looking good
2-for-2 with a walk, drives in Drew with an infield hit that he legged out down the line. That helps make it 5-4 to Seattle, but Upton was picked off cold. He needs to work on recognizing the moves of opposing pitchers.

The comedy show is starting...
So I have to go watch it. I am about 10% of the audience.

Taking a time-out
Startlingly mixed-bag of comedy this evening, shall we say.

Back at the game, Gutierrez looks like he got knocked about a bit, as it's 7-4 Mariners, albeit with some help from Upton. We've got the bases loaded though, looks like Reynolds just got hit? :-)

by Jim McLennan on Mar 20, 2008 12:28 AM EDT reply actions

And the game ends...
Not with a bang, but a whimper, as we go down 1-2-3 in the ninth. 7-4 Mariners is the final, and the key thing to take away from the game is the continuing issues of Micah Owings. charmer, your Tivo was probably best off avoiding this one...

And here I sit
studying for a major exam...  I completely forgot about the game tonight....

I caught snippets of this.
Mostly the top of the first. Then, flipping back on commercials of the Suns game and seeing Micah in trouble, cringing, and going back to the commercials.
