DBacks Daily 9/9/07 - Resilience Wins Again

Another win for the ages! On a night when everyone around us won, when our starter couldn't get out of the third inning, and when it was announced our second baseman went out for the season, this was a win worth fighting for. And fight we did! Up 3-0 quick, down 7-3 even quicker, we scratched out a 9-8 win of these tough Cardinals.

It was a quiet gameday thread last night. Some people at the game, some people at other events. For those of you who missed the actual game, I recommend the Republic's recap. The Tribune recap isn't too bad either, but the AP recap is rather bland.

Notes today focus on Orlando Hudson's impending surgery. There's a side feature on Callaspo in the Republic. The Republic also reports on Tuesday's 5th starter - Edgar Gonzalez. The Tribune notes mention the Diamondbacks' Class-A affiliate Visalia Oaks (when did that happen? What happened to Lancaster?) won their first-round post-season series. They neglected to add that they're now playing one San Jose Giants! If I would've known, I would've tried to go to last night's game. There's a chance I can make it to Game 5 (if it's played). If so, I'll bring my best scouting report back.

Ha, I knew this was too short for a reason - I forgot to check MLB.com! Interesting quote from the recap: Entering the game, Melvin likely might not have liked his chances in a game that turned to the bullpens early, with Tony Pena, Bob Wickman and Juan Cruz unavailable. Anyone know why Wickman was unavailable?

MLB.com notes discuss more of EdGon's start and replacing Orlando.

Game time 1:40pm, Brad Thompson vs Doug Davis.

I noticed this year as well...
...that Visalia is now our affiliate. I'm not sure if that happened this year or not, though.

Wickman was unavailable because he's too fat.

Jim, I need some more information? When's the last time (in a 4 game win streak or otherwise) that the Dbacks scored at least 9 runs in 3 out of 4 games? Ever??

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Rare, but not unheard of
Came close earlier this year: in the four-game set against Houston, we scored 9, 13, 5 and 8, so just one short in the finale. However, last year, we did it three games in a row:
  • May 17 SDP L 10-14
  • May 18 Off-day
  • May 19 ATL W 10-9
  • May 20 ATL W 13-0
Before that, we also did three in a row in April 2004;
  • Apr 25 SDP W 12-7
  • Apr 26 CHC W 9-0
  • Apr 27 CHC W 10-1
The best, however, was probably back in 2001, where we scored nine or more four games in a row, and five of six:
  • Apr 21 COL W 10-5
  • Apr 22 COL L 1-2
  • Apr 23 FLA W 9-0
  • Apr 24 FLA W 9-8
  • Apr 25 FLA W 10-7
  • Apr 26 ATL W 13-6
That was part of a twelve-game streak where it was feast and famine: each time, we either scored nine runs or more, or below four - nothing in the middle!

Hmmm...
What is it about the Padres and Braves that we like to bat them around?
