DBacks Daily 9/7/07 - Our Hopes Are Torn...
The news today of Orlando Hudson's torn ligament has certainly ripped at our hopes of a playoff run. But our chances are not destroyed! "Nothing to worry about, just maybe a couple of days," he said. How he'll be gone for only days with that injury, and not weeks, would baffle me... and interestingly, "Diamondbacks officials declined comment." The fact there's no team word on this likely means they're still discussing it with the medical staff and it could be a more serious injury. Jack Magruder has more on Orlando, the injury, and the options at second base. More discussion follows in the diary.
Another diary-worthy story this morning is that of Rick Ankiel rumored to have been delivered HGH. This feel-good story has suddenly turned sour. There's no doubt he'll get booed at the plate all weekend. (Here's hoping that affects his performance.)
The Republic also discusses Derrick Hall's push for the All-Star Game to come to the valley. The next NL openings are 2011 and 2013. Chase and Tropicana are the only two stadiums built between '91 and '01 to have not yet hosted the event. The improvements in downtown seem to be helping the chances of the city. More discussion here.
In player-related news, there two articles in the Republic this morning about Miguel Montero (quick Q and A) and Doug Davis (discussing his preparation strategies). MLB.com has an article on our Double-A duo, Reynolds and Upton.
The game today looks to be a goodie, with Adam Wainwright opposing Brandon Webb.
**Late Breaking News**
As posted by unnamedDBacksfan in this diary, the Diamondbacks have signed veteran reliever Bob Wickman to help bolster the bullpen. He's expected to be there today. This... is an interesting move. His numbers up front look decent. Let's hope rumors of his attitude are just that, rumors.

Thanks for that one
You cannot judge the energy of a clubhouse by the fans you meet on a blog. I'm actually not surprised the Padres' clubhouse is looser. They're a lot of veterans over there, they've done this before. We've got quite a few rookies still learning the ropes, still learning their place, still learning how to deal with wins and losses in a pennant race. That's got to at least be a little nervewracking!
And yes, I realize Scott hasn't been around for two months, but imagine how the clubhouse was before the all-star break, during our mini slump, and during a time when injuries were rampant... couldn't've been very loose then either.

Yeah, I know GLB doesn't reflect the SD clubhouse
However, you do have a pretty good point... when Scotty was traded, things were pretty dire, and you'd certainly think the clubhouse was stressed at the time. I'll bet that's the last thing he remembers from being here. The ASB certainly came at the perfect time this year. I'm sure if Scotty had been in the clubhouse anytime after the break, he'd be singing a slightly different tune.
It DOES seem like our veterans are looser than our rookies. (O-Dawg, Byrnes, Doug Davis seems pretty chill, etc.)

Incidentally,
'Arizona club president Derrick Hall did not take this development lightly, and saluted the intuition of GM Josh Byrnes, whose needle was stuck on "tails."'
On most coins, heads tends to be slightly heavier, ever so slightly increasing the probability that tails will end up on top.
Of course, it only increases the probability by .01% or something like that, so ultimately we were just lucky. (Which goes to summarize our season, as well)

Have I ever, EVER mentioned how much I hate ESPN??
They have us ranked 10th... below the Padres, Mets, Dodgers, and Phillies. WTF!!???
And before you say that it has ANYTHING to do with O-Dawg's thumb, (since they make a comment about that) notice that they had us ranked 11th last week. 11TH!! BEHIND THE CUBS!!!
I mentioned disparagingly and jokingly once before that I thought ESPN put us low in the rankings because we get lousy TV ratings. Now I've never really been a conspiracy theorist... but... ?? Does anyone have an explanation for this??
Maybe they really don't wanna piss off the larger markets, (who watch their shitty programming) so they put all the big market teams above us?
