Gameday Thread, #162: 9/30 vs. Rockies

BaseballReference.com preview [opens in new window]
Last game in the regular season. Meaningless as far as Arizona go, and it could end up being meaningless for the Rockies as well, if the San Diego score holds up - that would send the Padres in as the wild-card, probably to play the Phillies, and confirm us as hosting the Cubs in our half of the playoff bracked. Davis has, as widely expected, been scratched from his start, and will throw a bullpen session instead, just to keep his arm fresh. Wouldn't be surprised to see the B-roster out there again for much of this game. No point taking any risks on our end, and we do not owe the Padres any favors.
After a week where I've spent almost every leisure hour agonizing over playoff odds, games in other cities and wild-card tie-breaker scenarios, I've decided I'm taking this one off. I may throw a few bullpen comments on the side, but I want to be fully rested and ready to go in NLDS Game 1. As a professional, it's my duty to be at my highest level of performance, eloquence and sarcastic wit in the Gameday Thread there. So I'll sit this one out, and get myself mentally prepared for the battles to come...

It's all gravy
I'm optimistic about our chances, and I'm thinking NLCS at least.
Agreed
Pride-
cannot have that, I would like them to win this game....

Yes this is a good time
Mets
The intrigue factor is lessening rapidly.
Howard's been on an absolute tear this month.
Bottom nine in New York
Still 8-1.

Counting on another improbable season given their stats, is not going to happen.

I think I'd rather the Padres make it
But I still want there to be a playoff game tomorrow. :)
That's what I think
Two on, one out...
CQ, CQ, Come back
Hmm.
All going a bit pear shaped
As if we needed more ire
Kinda feels good though. ;)
Eh, GLB can suck it
Sure are.
Some people need to get over themselves.
Can you blame them, though?
...Plus, you should remember that most of the posters at GLB are barely out of diapers.
It's true.
"D-backs had nothing to play for
clinched the division. home field advantage throughout. why bother?
except that the Brewers had nothing to play for either. And they put their best lineup on the field against us for 2 games that they were playing for nothing but pride. I guess that's the difference between a team who respects the game and one who doesn't."
Yeah, and of course the Brewers have another series coming up to rest their starters for. These situations are exactly parallel.
Maybe the Padres should have respected the game by beating a Prince Fielder-less Brewers team today, or winning a winnable game yesterday.
The only people
Haha. Amen, brother.
I prefer the teleprompter alternative.
Isn't it ...

LOL @ Mark Grace
Speaking of teams
You DON'T go 3-0 on Carlos Quentin
Go Augie!! Make this interesting!!
I like the fact that...
That's actually
Oh, I agree -
I'm disappointed about this game
So... do the Dbacks come out and congratulate the Rockies? Wish them luck against the Madres?
Aww.... yay Colorado
Anyone know why the game will be played in Colorado? Did they win the season series?
Had to of
This is a classic weekend in the modern history of the sport. The AL went just like you imagined it would, but the NL is one of the best sporting stories of the year already.
And this feels SO much better then the Suns/Spurs series.

Well ...
Hell ...
I wonder if the Rockies broadcasters even KNOW they have a play in game :).

Hehe. They do.

I did like the emotion from Todd Helton
I'd like to take credit for that.
By the way
It's been a good weekend for me
Agreed.

There we go
On another note
BoMel probably should have started Eveland, because Petit gave us too much of a chance to win.
Okay...
Ideally, I'd like the Padres to beat the Rockies tomorrow (since they'll be burning Peavy, I think there's a good chance there) because I'd rather have the Padres face the Phillies than a team that matches up well against them in Colorado. As hot as it's been at Coors Field these days, I'd rather not face the Rox in the playoffs. The Padres are a good team, but I'd rather face them or Philadelphia than the Rockies.
I think the Phillies have a good chance to beat the Pads in Philly, especially since Peavy wouldn't pitch before game 3. I think we have a pretty good chance to pull off the Cubs series as well.
As Jim pointed out, we won the season series with the Padres 10-8, we won the series with the Cubs 4-2, and we won the series with the Phillies 5-1. Just another reason why I don't want to face the Rockies, should we make it to the NLCS...
I want the Madres to win tomorrow...

By the way,
Very strange, especially since MLB benefits financially from having more teams qualify to play more games.

It's on Cub fans!
________________
I've got 16 tickets. My friends and I will turn Chase field in to Wrigley field south. We'll see how much the D-backs like playing the Cubs when they are getting booed in their home parks. I'm selling 8 of them but strictly to Cubs fans.
Southwest Airlines has good rates for flights from Portland to phoenix for 79$ or grab a Amtrak ticket, it's a 12 hour train ride or just grab your keys, it's only a 16 hour drive. Take the 5 South to LA then take the 10 east until you hit Pheonix. Good luck getting their and represent well and LOUD. When on the road a Cubs fan must go with obnoxious tactics to mess with the home team. I plan on making fun of their players when they are on deck and when they are playing the field. The Snakes are in for a rude awakening.
Go Cubs!

Wow ...
There's this whole 'mystique' thing, going again. The East Coast bias and the Mid West Hard On. It's not like they Cubs went out of their way to get themselves to the play offs, they just happened to be in one of the weakest divisions in the game. If you couldn't clinch a division that featured the Cards, Reds, Pirates and Astros before Friday night, what chance do you have in the post season? Jeff Passan from Yahoo!Sports even broke down the reason they got there in one word:
Attrition.
And you know what, i'll give it up to all the Mid West/East coast people. Our tickets didn't sell out right away. We have 10 years of play under our belts, and the last time the Cubs were in the playoffs was against a similar team with a similar story (The Marlin's games were about 50/50 splits between Cubs and Marlin's fans, as I remember).
When we make it to 100 plus years as a franchise, i'm sure we can have some fans all across the country too. But we, as fans, aren't so hard up as cubs fans are for a world championship having completed one in history that can be considered recent instead of ancient.
Here's the thing about this play off run ... It means more to me, because we aren't doing it on everyone else's terms. We are doing it on a (major league small) budget, we are doing it by playing a pitching strong game with a mix of small ball, and we are doing it with a mostly home grown talent base. That means way more to me then buying out guys and bringing them in like we did in 01. These are our guys, we won't have someone cheering for us because we have Grace or Gonzo or Fins or Bell and they are happy to see them finally break through.
So ...
Come on down, Cubs fans. Don't let the salsa burn your ass too bad on the way out.
