Gameday Thread, #161: 9/29 vs. Rockies

Edgar Gonzalez (24, RHP, 8-3, 4.73)
Mark Redman (33, LHP, 1-4, 8.67)

BaseballReference.com preview [opens in new window]

With the Padres going down to the Brewers in extra innings, the Diamondbacks have won the 2007 National League West, guaranteed themselves the top seed in the league, and home-advantage throughout the playoffs. Today and tomorrow can thus became celebrations of the fact, with our core players being rested for bigger, more important battles to come. Well, it may not be relevant to us, but the Rockies are still in this thing.

Specifically, if they win tonight, and the Padres lose again tomorrow, then all hell could break lose. We are, depending on how the Mets and Phillies do, possibly looking at a four-way tie for the Wild Card, with two of those teams also tied for the NL East. Hey, we've paid our dues in antacids and ulcers this year: let's kick back, enjoy the last couple of days, and let others stress out for the remainder of the season. Especially, the Padres, who have to decide whether to send Peavy out on short rest, or put their post-season hopes on the shoulders of...Brett Tomko. Rather them than us!

We've running the door at the last Romantasy show tonight, down at the Paper Heart. I'll be lap-top enabled, but probably not until about 6:30pm, so will join the thread in progress. There will be beer. Oh, there will be lots of beer. Will there be dancing girls too, master? Dancing girls. Yes. I decree there will be dancing girls too. Cake, too. And none of that off-the-shelf stuff either...

Awesome
& we're gonna score some runs tonight, love that lineup.  Of course I'd rather have Young in the middle, but that is more than made for with Drew on the bench.  5+ runs I'd expect as usual with the better lineups.

Wow
CJ.  You're SOOOO right.  Against one of the worst starting pitchers in all of baseball, this perfectly constructed lineup netted 1 run.  Wow.  CJ for MOTY!

by johngordonma on Sep 30, 2007 6:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The funny thing
is that however much CJ talks about his lineups, the only real  rules he has are "don't play Drew and don't play Clark." He made a big stink before about who is in which spot, but as he notes above, he doesn't really care if Young is leading off instead of fourth.

Makes you think that batting ORDER isn't really that important to him. Maybe he's learning something.

College Football
Why in the world isn't this game being broadcast?
Thank you Kevin Seitzer

by Dr Robert on Sep 29, 2007 8:17 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No broadcast
I follow the Diamondbacks from the East Coast so my only choice is MLB Extra Innings.  I tuned in tonight for the game and much to my surprise the game was not being broadcast.  Then I looked closer at what was being broadcast.

All of the games being sent out had 7:00 pm EDT starting times.  There were only six of them.  None of the four games that involved teams who were still involved in positioning in the post season were available.

Is this just because they are in the "inferior" National League?  The usual suspects, the Yankees and Red Sox were, of course, covered.

Also, I have noticed during the season that MLB seldom carries the broadcast by the Diamondback announcers.  Is this a judgement call?

I do know...
This game was not originally intended to be televised in Phoenix, and was only added to the schedule at the last minute.

Kinda wish they hadn't bothered...

for a matchup of #9 hitters of say, Micah Owings vs. Tim Wakefield.

Unsportsmanlike thought
Shouldn't we want those crazy 4-team playoff scenarios to take place so that the Rockies, Padres, Mets and Phillies have to burn up pitchers during play-in games.

Which means: Should we try to throw this game?

Over at GLB
They have resigned themselves, with weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth, to the fact that they need to cheer for Arizona tonight. Oh, the humanity... :-) And with that, off we go. More from me later, if I can post around the beer, dancing girls and cake scheduled for later.

EXCELLENT GAME
If we can find a way to lose tomorrow (pitching Eveland would be a start) and the Mets & Phillies win and the Padres lose we can see them all use up pitcher after pitcher before the NLDS starts (hopefully for us agains the Wild Card from the NL East, say a depleted Mets rotation).

Yuck
I saw/heard some of the game up until about 7:00 p.m. when I had somewhere to go and thank goodness this game wasn't a must win or we'd all be crying by now.

Behold! My friends!
It seems that I have discovered the counter to the rainbow unicorn!!

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Frickin' genius.

That is gold.
I have just one minor change. Take the line "For All Your Needs" and make it "Because Of Roids."

No, that would be mixing metaphors.
It's anti-Padres, not anti-Giants.

Hey, screm 'em all, I say.
But I understand the basis.

Well, I've made an anti-Dodgers one
and an anti-Padres one now. (Although the Dodgers one wasn't very successful) I'll make something anti-Giants and anti-Rockies later, maybe.

Although, Bonds won't be with the Giants next year.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.
