Gameday Thread, #158: 9/26 vs. Pirates

Livan Hernandez (32, RHP, 11-10, 4.85)
Matt Morris (32, RHP, 9-11, 5.02)

BaseballReference.com preview [opens in new window]

Five games to go: three wins guarantee us the post-season. In fact, I think three guarantees us the NL West title too: that would get us 91 wins. The Padres are the only team who can reach that, and even if they did, we would take the title because we won the season series. I'm open to any corrections on this matter, however...

Turning to Livan Hernandez for comfort is a strange situation, but even though he's allowed 16 earned runs in 23 innings over his last four starts, that's still much better than Morris: 22 earned runs in 18.1 innings. Yikes. So, here's to our hitters getting the hits, with fewer wasted opportunities, men left on base and rally-killing double-plays. We will, of course, also be watching the Phillies, Rockies and Padres games with interest as they unfold. Afternoon start, a 4:05pm Arizona first pitch, so usual limited participation from me, at least till I get home around 6pm.

A tie gives us the division only if the Padres are the wildcard.  Otherwise, it's a 1 game playoff.

Numbers
I just went and looked at the standings.  If the the Diamondbacks and Padres both have 91 wins, both will be in the playoffs (Padres' magic number for the wildcard is 5).  The number of counting shall be 3.

Crappy 1st
Young, Drew, and Byrnes all are easy outs.

Is it just me, or does Eric Byrnes definitely lead the league in popouts?

And 1-2-3 go the D-backs.

Hehe. I don't know, nobody in the Pirates booth has provided an estimate, but the tarp's not even on all the way yet.

Field readiness
There's too much rain on the tarp, they're actually pulling it off the field. It'll take forever to get the field ready for play..

Wow, really poor grounds crew
The tarp's not even covering the pitching mound yet. And it's POURING. Umps probably waited too long, and now it's wet and windy and hard to move.

Yeah. And the schedule.
Tomorrow's an early game, so they could play game #2 as a double-header makeup.. Pittsburgh stays home and Arizona only has to go to Denver, but that is two time zones apart.

When you have...
One extra-base hit and no walks in a game, the lineup you order them in isn't going to make the slightest bit of difference at all.

by Jim McLennan on Sep 26, 2007 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

The Lineup Leads to those #'s
It is the reason for them, the cause of them.  The chain reaction that I tell you guys affects thems 1-8.  It's harder for them to make the pitcher battle...it makes a huge difference.  Do your research as you so often due.  You have about 5-6 games now with the lineup I "Endorse" & the average in those games I'm sure is over 5 runs a game with the lowest run total being 4.  Won't even respond to DBackskin, after all his arguing he thinks a lineup with 2 of the big 3 holes in it I posted about 77 times; he thinks I endorse...LOL.  Well at least he could be an English teacher.

by cj060896 on Sep 26, 2007 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Plugging your "holes" is meaningless.
cj,

Firstly, one batter in the lineup doesn't affect how good the next batter is. It wouldn't matter if you put the pitcher 1st and Eric Byrnes 9th, (or, as you would put it, Byrnes should be somewhere 1-8. You're very big on specifics, by the way.) or stacked the entire lineup with .300 hitters, if nobody gets a hit. That has exactly NOTHING to do with the lineup and EVERYTHING to do with the hitters themselves, and the game at hand. 1 extra base hit doesn't matter where it is if it's the only extra base hit we get. There is NO such thing as a lineup "chain reaction".

Secondly, you haven't even done the research to know whether whatever it is you're babbling about has ever actually been done. You want to take what you claim to be a sample of 5-6 games (That's a great sample size, by the way. In a 162 game season, that's a sample size of 3.0-3.7%)with "your" lineup, and then you explain to us that we should all raise our consciousness to your divine level because you're "sure the average is over 5 runs a game with the lowest being 4", yet you admittedly have no idea what you're talking about. I assume you weren't aware that the Diamondbacks are averaging 4.42 runs per game over the course of the entire season, making your statements completely meaningless and your claims inane, since your original claim that you apparently posted "77 times" was that the Dbacks would score a whopping 4 runs per game with "your" lineup. Even if we were to give you the benefit of the doubt, and let's pretend that the Dbacks have used your ideal lineup 6 times so far this season, and that they scored 5 runs in each of those games, for a total of 30 runs, and subtracted those runs and those games, the Dbacks are STILL averaging 4.40 runs per game. Essentially, your perfect lineup is average, and statistically worthless.

Finally, you have given exactly no evidence whatsoever for any of your stupid theories, and then you go around acting like you're a MENSA member and the rest of us suffer from Down's Syndrome. Nobody ever responds to anything you say because 1. none of it makes any sense 2. we can't understand what the hell you're trying to say, and 3. you really, really have no idea what you're talking about.

But hey, with all these .250 hitters, we should have won 95 games, not (almost) 90, right?

Begone, annoying little troll.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Job One
...maybe we'll need to pitch Webb on short rest in Colorado in order to make the post-season?

Long rest, yeah. It's a very tough call I'm glad I dont have to make. Basically, if the Pads & Rocks win later today, I think it makes sense to push Webb back to COL and hope you gut out tomorrow's game v the worst team in the league somehow, some way.  If the Pads lose however, I say start Webb tomorrow and kick the crap out of the Pirates, because that'll put enormous pressure on the Pads(who go to Milw) and Philly(who face Smoltz).

Everyone wants to win the division, but job one here is to make the postseason, even if the Rockies leapfrog us on the final weekend.

by Diamondhacks on Sep 26, 2007 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions

sorry, I misunderstood
You really did mean short rest. Could happen.

Here's an idea. Build a big fat early lead tomorrow against the Buc's bum du jour, and remove Brandon early so he can do just as you suggest...on Sunday.

And, if it turns out you dont need Sunday's game, Webby's extra rested for Game 1 NLDS :-)

by Diamondhacks on Sep 26, 2007 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Interesting idea...
But I just can't see it, not least because a Sunday appearance would cripple any chance of him playing in Game 1 on the NLDS. I say, run him out tomorrow: nail that win down, and then let the chips fall where they may in Colorado. Not least because the Rockies have owned Webb this year: if the stats were the other way, I could perhaps see the point of delaying him until Friday, but I'd rather put it in the bank against one of the worst teams in baseball. All wins count the same in the end...

by Jim McLennan on Sep 26, 2007 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

With you there...
We need the win tomorrow to right the ship, biggest game all year.

by cj060896 on Sep 26, 2007 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Valid points, except...
All wins count the same in the end...

Our position relative to the Phillies? Yes.  Relative to the Padres? Yes ( I think). Relative to the Rockies - no. Any win vs the Rocks knocks a big "two" off the magic number, not one.

That's my underlying driver for even considering bumping Webb, in the event things go sour (like tonight). I certainly take your point about his struggles in Coors and the NLDS implications, and agree Webb has a better chance to win in PIT. But a win in COL will be worth more - and the question becomes. "Will we need that "double credit" win?

It's very hard to say. Statistically, I'd normally say no. But when I look at some of these pitching matchups, home/away matchups down the stretch, I get uneasy. Grady Little played all kids today and Josh Fogg shut em out.

My gnawing concern is that if COL and either SD or PHI(who close at home v WASH) keep winning, Webb's projected win tomorrow may not be enough in the end. Bottom line: I'm not as confident as you appear to be, about our chances in Coors right now, sans Brandon.

P.S. This isnt something I feel confident about - there's an awful lot of assumptions here - just kind of thinking out loud, trying to figure it out. Like I say, I'm glad I dont have to make the call :-)

or does CY look tentative going back to the wall all game, alligator arms, etc? Even on the ball he caught (doubling up Bautista), he looks like he's uncomfortable out there.

Wet turf,maybe?

Has CY
caught one ball all night out there?  If he has, I missed it because I have seen him miss 2.

CY
I don't know if miss is the right word, not catch is better.

Ugh
The Madres just got 3 consecutive doubles to score 2 runs.  Screw you, Misch.

Hacks is right, though.
I think it's pretty soggy out there. CY hasn't looked like his usual fielding self.

...of course, you'd expect that to affect Morgan too, and he's been stellar.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Oh, well...
The good news is, this is Peavy's last regular-season start for San Diego, so they're going to be facing the Brewers, who will probably be as desperate to win as the Padres, with the rest of their rotation...who, basically, suck. I mean, if I was pinning our playoff hopes on Brett Tomko...

by Jim McLennan on Sep 26, 2007 11:03 PM EDT reply actions

And the Padres
Just put a five-spot on the Giants, so doesn't look like we'll get any help there. One-game lead looks all but certain for tomorrow.

by Jim McLennan on Sep 26, 2007 11:26 PM EDT reply actions

Peavy
Would the Padres throw Peavy on 3 days' rest again to pitch the final game of the season if they were tied with AZ?  Didn't work out so well the last time for SD with Peavy on 3 days' rest. We could really use some help from Milwaukee starting Friday.  SD hasn't played that well the past week either and did anyone think Misch was going to do anything good against Peavy/SD?

by TwinnerA on Sep 27, 2007 12:10 AM EDT reply actions

It wont
matter.  There will be no tie for the division come last day.

by unnamedDBacksfan on Sep 27, 2007 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions

More importantly...
...is the fact that, not only has Milwaukee kicked ass at home all year, but with the Cubs' loss today, the Brew Crew is only 2 games behind in the NL Central. The Brewers will be fighting for their first playoff spot in 25 years, in their home stadium, in a 4 game series against the scrubs of San Diego's pitching staff.

I'd really, really prefer it if we could just lock down a postseason spot ourselves, but it sure does look like we're going to need some help, especially as we haven't fared well this season against Colorado.

Time to remedy that, even if we have to go all the way to Denver to do it. (After beating the Pirates tomorrow)

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Well, Padres win, and Bonds is gone
Bonds did a classy thing by hugging and thanking Peavy as he walked off the field. And Greg Maddux returned the favor by sitting in the visitors dugout (alone, in the shot they had) and watched the (4 minute) tribute to Bonds they showed on the video board.

Of course, this was after he put his glove in the camera's face before the game.

It'll certainly be different without him around here next season. Hopefully it will make it easier to get tickets! ;)
