Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Gameday Thread, #134: 8/29 vs. Padres

Micah Owings (24, RHP, 6-7, 4.69)
Greg Maddux (41, RHP, 10-9, 3.90)

BaseballReference.com preview [opens in new window]

Much has been written about how Arizona pwns [sic] Greg Maddux, with a 10-1 record against him over the years. It is true that most of those responsible for the bulk of those wins are not longer playing, but Conor Jackson is 3-for-6, Stephen Drew 3-for-5, Orlando Hudson 3-for-7 and Eric Byrnes 5-for-12 against Maddux. Here's to our recently offensive offense waking up, because otherwise, we'll be ending the night looking alongside at San Diego, rather than down on them.

Our secret weapon is, of course, Micah Owings, though Maddux himself is a career .173 hitter, which is quite respectable. This promises to be a tough test for Pwnings, who has feasted on lesser mortals - his homers came against Buddy Carlyle, Sean Marshall and Byung-Hyun Kim - but has been less successful facing bigger names like Glavine and Penny. The key could be the strike-zone: Glavine is notorious for getting the benefit of every call, while Owings is still a rookie. If that proves to be the case again tonight, it could be tough, but we're due a few breaks, after recent umpiring experiences. Fingers crossed. Should be here for most of it: getting a hair-cut first, but that shouldn't take long. :-)

watching mets phillies
and i gotta say, it's nice to see some cities canpack in noisy fans when the division leader comes to town in august

True
It's miserable how a good team (Padres) with a brand-spanking-new ballpark (Petco Park) cannot come even close to packing the house against a very good team (take a wild guess :P).

In the NL or AL East, I know from first hand that the Yanks or the Mets always have a good crown when facing a relatively good opponent. True, New York is the biggest market in the MLB, but that shouldn't account for all of the difference.

by LucaMaz3 on Aug 29, 2007 10:01 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

game that was on was in philly
and they were packed and loud, watching their team make up another game on the mets (now 3 gb). Game had a seriously wacky ending. Runners on 1st and 3rd, one out, Shawn Green up, hits a dribbler to second, Anderson from first slides 3 feet out of the basepath and shoves Jimmy Rollins to keep him from making a DP he wasn't going to make anyway. Game over, lots of yelling, and even Mets announcers admitting it was interference.
But the Phillies fans were there and they were loud.

CY
A leadoff single, just to get picked off. At least he raised that batting average.

by LucaMaz3 on Aug 29, 2007 10:11 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Owings
Allowed a hit and then walked a guy. A DP or K against Bradley would be big.

by LucaMaz3 on Aug 29, 2007 10:19 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bases loaded, 0 outs
This sucks.

That Bradley HBP looked like it hurt liked the dickens.

by LucaMaz3 on Aug 29, 2007 10:21 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

A hit to Giles
and a walk to cameron. Just because they're the other guys doesn't mean they don't have names.

Bradley HPB. Owings might be a little nervous.

That
was impressive work.  And it has to be disheartening for SD to blow such a beautiful chance in such an awful fashion.

Shades of last night
First two on, but only one run.  They're going to have to be more efficient than that.

by peachy rex on Aug 29, 2007 10:50 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not so fundamental...
Owings doesn't get the bunt down - if he'd advanced the runners, Young's hit would have scored both of them. And Upton gets gunned down at the plate: why was he heading for home? Still, we take the lead. For the third time in this series, as I recall...

by Jim McLennan on Aug 29, 2007 10:50 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Rats!
Missed opportunity by stranding two, and one at third. That's gonna come back to haunt us.

It's probably a toss-up..
..JD Drew is a sore subject in Boston.  Lots of $$.  Not a lot of hits.

by batster on Aug 29, 2007 11:48 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Stephen does not = JD.
Stephen can't hit because he sucks. JD can't hit because he sucks AND he's always injured for the majority of the year.

That diabolical and evil genius Scott Boras keeps getting JD Drew big contracts on potential alone. How many lost seasons does a guy have to play before you decide that he's not worth it?? At least Stephen plays a tough position; you could get any old schmuck to play outfield. Stephen's actually outhomered JD too, believe it or not.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Dear offense,
It would be awfully loverly if you would ever come back.  I don't know what we ever did to you, but please know that we miss you and love you dearly.  We'll leave the light on for you.

Love,

The D'backs.

Stay grindy, my friends.

Time to curse like a stevedore -
batster is clearly taking care of the 'drinking like a stevedore' side already.

no 'Skins,no haiku
without poetry,so sad
hard to bear the loss

a poem, inspired by
"Red Wheelbarrow" by William Carlos Williams

so much depends
upon

an offensive
outburst

coming down to
earth

beside the LA
Dodgers

Stay grindy, my friends.

What a depressing loss
That's all I can say. There is no particular person to blame, which makes it even more confounding and frustrating.

Tomorrow
I will drape a rosary on my 'puter, lay a 4 leafed clover on it,burn incense to strange gods and call on the Flying Spaghetti Monster.Does wearing your underwear inside out help?
We will meet in Red 3 at the hour of scampering.

Can't hurt?
Nothing else is working, so.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

It may prove necessary...
To invoke St. Penelope. That's how serious this is...

Well,
She worked like.... err.. a charm against the Cubs?

Don't really WANT to
It's best not to bother divine entities for little things. They don't react well to that, I've found. But the situation is teetering on the edge of dire, I think, and so steps may need to be taken...

Damn
Not just second guessing here but didn't agree with Melvin taking Owings out in the first place.  Didn't look like he was tired and he was getting every batter out.  Owings pitched great, even better than Maddox IMHO.  Someone put out an Ambert Alert on our offense.  Doug Davis, now it's up to you to shut them down tomorrow and hope that maybe your teammates can scratch out a few runs. Sigh. My teeth are starting to hurt from grinding them the past three days.  Ouch.

You're grinding your teeth too!
Would the offense please hit a few more and score a few more if not for the team at least for our dental health?
