Gameday Thread, #125: 8/19 vs. Braves

BaseballReference.com preview [opens in new window]
So, our first starter throws a two-hit shutout. The next smacks two homers and drives in six runs. No pressure on you, Mr. Petit: just solve world hunger and sort out that pesky Middle East issue in the dugout between innings, and we'll be satisfied. :-) The series is in the bag, and that's probably a good thing, since this is the pitching matchup which I feel most wobbly about: basically, our #5 against their #2.
But once again, Arizona has the longest winning streak in the majors, and the worst we can do is come back to Phoenix with a 4-2 road trip and a four-game lead, one better than it was when we left, and with six games less left on the schedule. Anything that happens tomorrow, be it a Diamondbacks win, or the Padres dropping another game in Houston, will simply be icing on the cake. So go out there and do your best, Petit Unit, even as you face an opposing pitcher with 200 more wins than you and a Cy Young on his mantelpiece. For we have the best record in the National League, and we fear no-one!
Frickin' early start, it being an afternoon game on the East coast, so odds are I won't be around for first pitch. Hence, getting this up well in advance: start without me, and I'll maybe swing by later, when I peel myself out of the soft and fluffy embrace of the bed.

I was surprised....
Hasn't he already hit like 6 or 7 for Atlanta, in the two weeks or so since he was traded???
Lead erased on a 2 run homer...

Smoltz fools Upton badly
By the way, if Smoltz gets two more strikeouts today (which looks likely) he'll pass Phil Neikro for the all time Braves lead -- so the game will likely be paused for a celebration for that.

"Your wish, my command."
Why are they replacing Reynolds with Cirillo?
crazy idea
They'd all be fresh for other action during the week, and we wouldn't just be throwing in the towel every fifth day. Thoughts?

Padres
Maybe we can....
Peavy has an ERA
by seton hall snake pit on Aug 19, 2007 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, but...
(Yes, the Brewers still lead. We're at 37-23, and they're at 40-24. However, you're not going to make much noise when you're only 23-36 on the road. We, on the other hand, have the second best NL road record as well. Now THAT'S consistency.)
So Webby next pitches at home against Brew Crew?
or Ryan Braun

BB to Tex??
I'm not sure why nobody caught that ball,
I'm wondering...

Of course, Jones is usually the player in the game today that CY is compared to.

2 on, no outs.
Maybe using TC as a pinch-hitter will pay off here.
Or.... maybe not.
I was thinking Pwnings

Could have something going here
Dammit!!
Oh, Salazar GIDP.
By the way,
Since the only time we've lost to the Braves was a blowout, we haven't had a chance to see him. :-P
Argh....
Gee, Smoltz sure does get the calls from the Umps,
Miggy HBP.
Cirillo draws a walk.
CY is a Braves killer, btw. He's like Smallpox.
(Too soon?)

The plate is extra wide today.
Drew strikes out, Smoltz gets out of it. Again.
Sinister pitches a good inning.
Well, look at it this way.
This way, it's their best starter against our worst, and Webby and Pwnings got to pitch against scrubs.
bet you're glad
by johngordonma on Aug 19, 2007 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm content wth the result of the series
It's still in triple digits,
Smoltz comes back out for the 8th.
Err.. maybe not, based on that K by Hudson.
Ow....
That's two in two innings, folks.
The pain just won't stop.
Augie's stayin' alive.

I guess the 'answer' is that Teixeira is pulled off first, but you're telling me that Cirillo can still get that big of a jump?

Wow...
Not that Jose isn't really really good, but...
Yet you still get out of it??? Dayamn... Wickman must've made a pact with the devil or something. (And I didn't even know Barry Bonds MAKES pacts with other players)
Well, nice game for the home crowd.
Braves fans, who were apparently rooting for Micah to hit a triple last night to get the cycle, (according to DiamondbacksWIn) got to see John Smoltz dominate the team that has largely dominated the Braves this season, as well as watch him become the franchise strikeout leader. Unfortunately, our 4 game win streak got snapped, as well.
Dbacks go home and prepare to face the Brew Crew, and even though we lost 3 of 4 in Milwaukee, I like our odds. The Brewers are now just 2 games over .500 and have a record of 13 games below .500 on the road.
Padres are down to the 'Stros 1-0 early in that game, and even if they come back to win, we're leaving Atlanta no worse than 4 games ahead. The Mets won today, so we're again slightly behind them in win % for best record in the NL. Dodgers are beating the Rockies 1-0 early in their game. As long as the Rockies and Dodgers keep beating up on each other, the further and further back they both go.
Now let's go home and beat some Brewers!!
