Gameday Thread, #125: 8/19 vs. Braves

Yusmeiro Petit, RHP (2-3, 4.23)
John Smoltz, RHP (10-6, 3.09)

BaseballReference.com preview [opens in new window]

So, our first starter throws a two-hit shutout. The next smacks two homers and drives in six runs. No pressure on you, Mr. Petit: just solve world hunger and sort out that pesky Middle East issue in the dugout between innings, and we'll be satisfied. :-) The series is in the bag, and that's probably a good thing, since this is the pitching matchup which I feel most wobbly about: basically, our #5 against their #2.

But once again, Arizona has the longest winning streak in the majors, and the worst we can do is come back to Phoenix with a 4-2 road trip and a four-game lead, one better than it was when we left, and with six games less left on the schedule. Anything that happens tomorrow, be it a Diamondbacks win, or the Padres dropping another game in Houston, will simply be icing on the cake. So go out there and do your best, Petit Unit, even as you face an opposing pitcher with 200 more wins than you and a Cy Young on his mantelpiece. For we have the best record in the National League, and we fear no-one!

Frickin' early start, it being an afternoon game on the East coast, so odds are I won't be around for first pitch. Hence, getting this up well in advance: start without me, and I'll maybe swing by later, when I peel myself out of the soft and fluffy embrace of the bed.

Sorry, don't know why it came out like that:

Young, CF
Drew, SS
Hudson, 2B
Jackson, 1B
Reynolds, 3B
Salazar, LF
Upton, RF
Montero, C
Petit, P

BoMels is thourougly uninventive
Obviously, Snyderman gets the day off (day-game after a night-game) but Drew batting second? The first two hitters of our order have averages of .238 and .233!

At least try Reynolds or JUpton up there!

I can agree with that!
We will meet in Red 3 at the hour of scampering.

O Dawg comes through!
Maybe the Braves have been rattled.
We will meet in Red 3 at the hour of scampering.

Oh Joy Oh Rapture
Here's to TBS having  the game on for my Brooklyn viewing pleasure. They even have a good broadcast crew.

Love it.

And we're up t o a quick lead on Johnny Smoltz.

by andrewinnewyork on Aug 19, 2007 1:16 PM EDT reply actions

The Braves jerseys are hideous
They aren't even red. Their like the color of red Kool-Aid. I would hate to have my team wear them.

by LucaMaz3 on Aug 19, 2007 1:18 PM EDT reply actions

Damn it Petit!
We have dozens of other guys in our minor leagues who can suck as much as you! And if you continue this, you will be replaced by one!

by LucaMaz3 on Aug 19, 2007 1:20 PM EDT reply actions

Let's not ride hiim too hard
Tex has been on fire since coming to Atlanta. He's going to get his share. Let's see if Petit can get through  the bottom half of hte lineup before we start annointing him god-emperor of suck.

by andrewinnewyork on Aug 19, 2007 1:24 PM EDT reply actions

I was surprised....
That Tex only has 20 homers on the year.

Hasn't he already hit like 6 or 7 for Atlanta, in the two weeks or so since he was traded???

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Aug 19, 2007 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Lead erased on a 2 run homer...
But got out of the inning without further damage.

by singaporedbacksfan on Aug 19, 2007 1:24 PM EDT reply actions

Braves Announcers
Are very big on the Dbacks. Comparing them to the 1991 Braves, where they had a lot of raw talent and people said they couldn't win because they were inexperienced. But reminding that they all came up together and played AA and AAA together and "just kept doing what they had been doing in the minor leagues." That's a pretty big complement.

by andrewinnewyork on Aug 19, 2007 1:27 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah its nice...
...to hear recognition from other teams broadcasters.

by Englishdback on Aug 19, 2007 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Smoltz fools Upton badly
well Justin will get his eventually.

By the way, if Smoltz gets two more strikeouts today (which looks likely) he'll pass Phil Neikro for the all time Braves lead -- so the game will likely be paused for a celebration for that.

by andrewinnewyork on Aug 19, 2007 1:28 PM EDT reply actions

Braves Announcers
...also say Smoltz looks uncomfortable, which could mean he's hurt. Look for that to play out during the game.

by LucaMaz3 on Aug 19, 2007 1:29 PM EDT reply actions

God damn
Leadoff double wasted!

I really don't like Dane Cook.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Aug 19, 2007 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

...and not let the Braves turn the lineup over.

Stealing second just to get them to throw and steal home.

Then John Smoltz takes the braves career strikeout lead.

Dropping the baseball for a balk
that's about as good as falling for the hidden-ball trick last year.

How happy are the Braves
to have picked up Teixera at the trade deadline. I think it would be fun to do things like pick up power hitters at the trade deadline.

by Englishdback on Aug 19, 2007 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions

No I'm with Ben

I wasn't trying to be sarcastic
I'm the one that started this by saying we needed an extra piece somewhere. 5-game lead or not, I'd be much happier with someone in that fifth spot other than Petit.

this is when Smoltz gets dangerous
The guy hardly ever gives up a lead.  Fortunately the Braves bullpen is dinged up.  Hope we can get there sooner or later, b/c as long as Smoltz is in, I'm not expecting much more scoring on our behalf.

"Your wish, my command."
Says BoMel.

Why are they replacing Reynolds with Cirillo?

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Aug 19, 2007 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

crazy idea
Wonder if BoMel should go to a three-headed fifth starter.  Instead of watching our fifth starter get pounded every time out there, perhaps we should put together three of our long relievers and have them each throw 2 innings.  So, today, Petit would throw 2, then EdGon throw 2, then Nippert hurl 2.

They'd all be fresh for other action during the week, and we wouldn't just be throwing in the towel every fifth day.  Thoughts?

by johngordonma on Aug 19, 2007 2:25 PM EDT reply actions

great idea
Especially since the candidates for such a role are all the sort of guys who are bound to get shelled the second time through the order.

I say
we keep throwing guys out there. If they can't get it done in 2 or 3 starts then we try someone else. Right now we have a big enough cushion that we can toy with the 5 spot

just looking at our upcoming schedule and noticed that 7 of our next 16 games are against the Padres.  If we continue these streak through those games, we could have the entire comfortably in the rear view mirror... on the other hand, it's a huge opportunity for the Padres to make up significant ground.

Looking forward to the fun!

Well, but...
We also have the second best home record in the NL.

(Yes, the Brewers still lead. We're at 37-23, and they're at 40-24. However, you're not going to make much noise when you're only 23-36 on the road. We, on the other hand, have the second best NL road record as well. Now THAT'S consistency.)

I'm wondering...
Why there aren't many people in the stands. Is it because they're playing the Dbacks, who, despite leading the NL, get no coverage/respect? Or is it because we beat them by 10 runs combined the last two nights??

It's because

down 6-2
in the 8th inning, I don't see the reason to use one of our best relievers.  Should use somebody else... even Augie!

Because...
A four run lead isn't insurmountable. All year we've been conceding games when we're down by more than about 3 (which doesn't happen that often, actually). We need to start going after those games where we get behind.

defensive indifference
never understood why catchers will let guys just steal a base in that situation (Upton just took a base on McCann).  I understand you're up by a bunch and that the run doesn't count, but to me, why not take a shot at throwing the guy out?  The worst thing to happen is massively overthrow it and Upton ends up at 3rd.  No big deal.  But you've got at least a 1 in 3 chance of throwing him out.  Why not give it a shot?

Cirillo
And Cirillo just did it with two outs...

I guess the 'answer' is that Teixeira is pulled off first, but you're telling me that Cirillo can still get that big of a jump?

Tying run!
Drew with the big walk... and the tying run walks to the plate in the person of O-Dawg.  Maybe they should pinch hit for him and bring in Pwnings!

C'mon O-Dawg!!
You've been hot!! Keep it up!!!!

tying run at the plate
Would be something else if we made a move at this game. We haven't seemed to be in it all day long.

Bases loaded, 2 outs, O-Dawg grounds out.

Not that Jose isn't really really good, but...
Bases loaded, tying run comes to the plate in a 4 run game??

Yet you still get out of it??? Dayamn... Wickman must've made a pact with the devil or something. (And I didn't even know Barry Bonds MAKES pacts with other players)

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Well, nice game for the home crowd.
I'm content with us having taken our 9th (franchise record) straight series. I really thought we were going to blow it in Atlanta, even with Webb pitching the first game.

Braves fans, who were apparently rooting for Micah to hit a triple last night to get the cycle, (according to DiamondbacksWIn) got to see John Smoltz dominate the team that has largely dominated the Braves this season, as well as watch him become the franchise strikeout leader. Unfortunately, our 4 game win streak got snapped, as well.

Dbacks go home and prepare to face the Brew Crew, and even though we lost 3 of 4 in Milwaukee, I like our odds. The Brewers are now just 2 games over .500 and have a record of 13 games below .500 on the road.

Padres are down to the 'Stros 1-0 early in that game, and even if they come back to win, we're leaving Atlanta no worse than 4 games ahead. The Mets won today, so we're again slightly behind them in win % for best record in the NL. Dodgers are beating the Rockies 1-0 early in their game. As long as the Rockies and Dodgers keep beating up on each other, the further and further back they both go.

Now let's go home and beat some Brewers!!

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Well, you pretty much summed up how I feel.
Back to Chase Field an demolish the Brewers!

By the way,
We do need to find a consistent 5th starter, but it's not an awful problem to have. I remember back in the years when we were talking about how much we needed a consistent 3rd starter.

Not that this has anything to do with anything
but I saw Diamondbacks' President, Derrick Hall, at breakfast today.
