Gameday Thread, #124: 8/18 vs. Braves

Micah Owings (24, RHP, 5-6, 4.76)
Buddy Carlyle (29, RHP, 7-4, 4.39)

BaseballReference.com preview [opens in new window]

The bar was set remarkably high yesterday, with Brandon Webb complete-game shutout. How will Micah Owings fare, following on from that? His last outing was probably his best since May, striking out eight and pitching into the seventh inning, allowing only one run. After a hideous July (0-3, with a 9.55 ERA), Owings has rebounded this month, posting an ERA of 2.89 in his three appearances, though victory has so far eluded him, with his winless streak now up to nine starts.

He will have the advantage of unfamiliarity over the Braves, who have yet to face him. Mind you, we're not much better off against Carlyle, with Jeff Cirillo the only player to have had more than one plate-appearance. He has faced the Diamondbacks before, but that was all the way back in October 1999, when he was with the Padres. Obviously, no-one who played that day is still with the team...well, not so obviously, actually, as the winning pitcher that day was...Byung-Hyun Kim.

Going to make an earnest effort to be around for all of this one, so I look forward to being an active participant and extending our streak of hundred-post threads.

Today's lineup
  1. C. Young cf .240
  2. O. Hudson 2b .293
  3. E. Byrnes lf .301
  4. T. Clark 1b .233
  5. M. Reynolds 3b .285
  6. S. Drew ss .230
  7. C. Snyder c .253
  8. J. Salazar rf .308
  9. M. Owings p .205
Clark batting clean-up again: cue the weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth from many fans. Upton gets a break, with Salazar playing right. Probably a good thing, since Upton is 5-for-31 since his almost-cycle.

Clark 4th and Drew 6th.  Salazar 8th.

Apparently
Because Carlyle struggles against lefties. They're batting .342 against him this year. Not that you'd know it, by that Clark K, of course...

I would like to see
Reynolds batting cleanup. In the last week, he's 12-25 with 3 homers.

I like Owings
I'm sure he'll come good someday,so I'm predicting a win here .Also, someone else with a HR for a change.(of course that doesn't mean CY and Reynman can't hit a big bomb as well)

Nothing doing
Clark leaves all the good pitches, and swings at the bad ones. Tony: you're a great pinch-hitter, but as a starter...not so much.

Odd
Is Owings throwing a cutter?  I swear that last pitch to Harris broke in.  Perhaps just a mis-thrown slider?

It appears someone took the beeping device out of it. Without it, the Braves hitters apparently had no clue whereabout it was... Well, going by some of their swings, anyway!

If a game is called after play begins but before 4 1/2 innings have been completed (if the home team is ahead) or five innings have been completed (if the visitors are ahead or the game is tied), the game is not an official game. The umpire declares "No Game", the game is played in its entirety at a later date, and statistics compiled during the game are not counted.

Yes, I remember there was a schedule, but I suspect no-one wants to interfere with the chemistry of the team in any way, even the trivialest.

Black
I wish the team would wear the black unis more often than Saturday.

by oklahomasooners on Aug 18, 2007 8:47 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The reason they
don't wear the black jerseys too often is because they can't wear them on the road. The reason they can't is because they have a whole new helmets and hats, which would be even harder to lug around on the road.

by LucaMaz3 on Aug 18, 2007 8:48 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think...
The black ones are a bit more intimidating though.

However, psychologists tend to disagree:

"Studies show that red can have a physical effect, increasing the rate of respiration and raising blood pressure; red also is said to make people hungry."

and

"In human color psychology, red is associated with energy and blood, and emotions that stir the blood, including anger, passion, and love."

So, maybe when Ken-Ken and Moorad changed the uni colors, they were just trying to improve the quality of play. It worked, I guess.

"red also is said to make people hungry"
Maybe they were also trying to sell more concessions.

Last 5+ RBI game by a pitcher: Robert Person had a 7 RBI day for the Phillies on June 2nd, 2002. Only two other pitchers have managed it since 1977. Shawn Estes in 2000, Danny Jackson in 1994.

Dontrelle Willis, September 20th last year. One before that: Randy Wolf, August 11th, 2004. Person (see above) was the one before that. Both Wolf and Person only have four HR in their careers, so hitting half of them in one game isn't bad going. I expect Micah to have a few more before he's finished...

Owings 11 bases tonight is certainly the most in the last fifty years, passing the ten hit by by Baltimore's Jack Harshman, on September 23rd, 1958 (two homers and a double). We'll have to wait for Elias to come up with a definitive answer, as BaseballReference.com only goes back to 1957.

Boys in Red Take Another
Great game by all! Except Peguero, but come tommorow, he won't be on the team. That's one thing I love about the D-Backs...if a reliever sucks, he doesn't live to see another day. See J.D. Durbin, Brandon Medders, Dana Eveland, Joe Kennedy. Besides the Four Horsemen (actually, let's make it Five to include Sinister Slaten), everyone is expendable. Compare this to, let's say, the Yankees, where if a reliever sucks, too bad, their not paying him 2 million bucks (or whatever) to pitch in Triple-A. Today was not Jailen Peguero's day, and a trip down Highway 10 is in the cards.

Concerning today's game, I think Owings has redeemed himself. I mean, though there was a petition for a Nippert/EdGon/whoever to take his place in the starting rotaition, none of them is as good as him, at pitching at least. He is always good for a mediocre start at the worst (except 7/1 @ SF and 7/6 @ Cin) and has more upside than EdGon or Nippert. Oh, and did I mention, he's pretty good at hitting?

Today's pitching performance for Owings was pretty good, but by the time he started sitting down Braves, the game was already over. I have to say, though, I'm enjoying the whole Webb scoreless streak and the Owings 2 homers because of the media that it generates. The Diamondbacks have probably the least national media of any contending team. It's amazing. I bet many people who follow baseball outside of Arizona + surrounding region wouldn't know they are in first.

Anyway, sorry for ranting, but the last thing I have to say is that BoMels in NO WAY deserves the Manager of the Year. Sorry, he doesn't. A more appropriate award would be a Front Office of the Year to Josh Byrnes and Jeff Moorad. For one of the trillion reasons he doesn't see Starting:Tony Clark. Couldn't CoJack could have gone 1-5 with 2 K's? And at least he has potential! I appreciate the clubhouse presence of Clark, but I think if CoJack gets days off, try to get a young player in the lineup. I'm sure most guys could play mediocre first base if you taught 'em a little.

Finally, great win, and San Diego is trailing 3-2 in the middle of the 6th, so hopefully we can stretch our lead to 5 games.

Melvin
This should probably go up as a new diary, but I'm too lazy.... I think Melvin has all but sealed Manager of the year.  It's done.  It's over.  Put his name on the trophy.  As with a lot of things, I've been with Ben on the anti-Melvin bandwagon from the beginning.  And to be honest, I don't really think Melvin is a great manager.

But I don't see any way that Melvin doesn't win manager of the year right now.  Taking the same basic team from last year and getting about 90 wins out of them?  And the run differential over-performance will seal the deal.

Engrave it today: "Robert Melvin 2007 Manager of the Year."

by johngordonma on Aug 19, 2007 7:07 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It sickens me
Melvin is the 2nd head in the 2-headed hoorah-a-polooza going on around this team right now.  I've still yet to see an argument from anyone that tells me that this team doesn't win despite Melvin.

About the only arugment that I'll give any weight to is that this team doesn't let horrible losses carry over.  I'll give Melvin a little bit of the credit there, but I'm pretty sure a lot of that came in when Kirk Gibson was brought on board.

Relievers
[ That's one thing I love about the D-Backs...if a reliever sucks, he doesn't live to see another day. See J.D. Durbin, Brandon Medders, Dana Eveland, Joe Kennedy. Besides the Four Horsemen (actually, let's make it Five to include Sinister Slaten), everyone is expendable. ]

IIRC, Medders stuck around for a month after blowing Randy's 3-0 lead with one pitch: he even gave up two homers in his next inning of work following that, but survived until June somehow. I think he had photos of Bob Melvin and Tony Clark. Which he has now handed to Tony Clark. :-)

We need a couple of back-end guys to mop-up blowouts, where conceding a few runs doesn't make any difference. Heck, throw Augie Ojeda out there too. The good thing about today's game is, following on from yesterday, it means the 4.5 Horsemen have all had two full days off: actually, three for Peña, four for Slaten and Cruz. That is vital, as we go down the line towards October.

Padres still losing in the seventh. Colorado ahead of Los Angeles, which works for me too!
