Gameday Thread, #124: 8/18 vs. Braves

BaseballReference.com preview [opens in new window]
The bar was set remarkably high yesterday, with Brandon Webb complete-game shutout. How will Micah Owings fare, following on from that? His last outing was probably his best since May, striking out eight and pitching into the seventh inning, allowing only one run. After a hideous July (0-3, with a 9.55 ERA), Owings has rebounded this month, posting an ERA of 2.89 in his three appearances, though victory has so far eluded him, with his winless streak now up to nine starts.
He will have the advantage of unfamiliarity over the Braves, who have yet to face him. Mind you, we're not much better off against Carlyle, with Jeff Cirillo the only player to have had more than one plate-appearance. He has faced the Diamondbacks before, but that was all the way back in October 1999, when he was with the Padres. Obviously, no-one who played that day is still with the team...well, not so obviously, actually, as the winning pitcher that day was...Byung-Hyun Kim.
Going to make an earnest effort to be around for all of this one, so I look forward to being an active participant and extending our streak of hundred-post threads.

Never actually saw either.
I've always like the game Postal so I'm looking forward to the movie (even though it was filmed in Canada). The game itself takes place in a podunk Arizona town like Benson or Bisbee or Tombstone or something.
It's always nice...

The reason they
I think...
However, psychologists tend to disagree:
"Studies show that red can have a physical effect, increasing the rate of respiration and raising blood pressure; red also is said to make people hungry."
and
"In human color psychology, red is associated with energy and blood, and emotions that stir the blood, including anger, passion, and love."
So, maybe when Ken-Ken and Moorad changed the uni colors, they were just trying to improve the quality of play. It worked, I guess.
"red also is said to make people hungry"
Maybe they were also trying to sell more concessions.

Where's Ben bitching about whenever BoMel uses Pwnings as a pinch hitter??
Well...
Once again, Turner Field becomes the Indian burial ground.
MO was the MAN
2 of 3. Again. 8-)
I really thought our run was going to end in Atlanta. Of course, I thought the same thing about Webby's run.
Another...
And I wasn't even here for most of it to pad the stats.
Does anyone know?
You're right. Okay. Then is that the longest home run ever hit by a pitcher not named Babe Ruth?
Boys in Red Take Another
Concerning today's game, I think Owings has redeemed himself. I mean, though there was a petition for a Nippert/EdGon/whoever to take his place in the starting rotaition, none of them is as good as him, at pitching at least. He is always good for a mediocre start at the worst (except 7/1 @ SF and 7/6 @ Cin) and has more upside than EdGon or Nippert. Oh, and did I mention, he's pretty good at hitting?
Today's pitching performance for Owings was pretty good, but by the time he started sitting down Braves, the game was already over. I have to say, though, I'm enjoying the whole Webb scoreless streak and the Owings 2 homers because of the media that it generates. The Diamondbacks have probably the least national media of any contending team. It's amazing. I bet many people who follow baseball outside of Arizona + surrounding region wouldn't know they are in first.
Anyway, sorry for ranting, but the last thing I have to say is that BoMels in NO WAY deserves the Manager of the Year. Sorry, he doesn't. A more appropriate award would be a Front Office of the Year to Josh Byrnes and Jeff Moorad. For one of the trillion reasons he doesn't see Starting:Tony Clark. Couldn't CoJack could have gone 1-5 with 2 K's? And at least he has potential! I appreciate the clubhouse presence of Clark, but I think if CoJack gets days off, try to get a young player in the lineup. I'm sure most guys could play mediocre first base if you taught 'em a little.
Finally, great win, and San Diego is trailing 3-2 in the middle of the 6th, so hopefully we can stretch our lead to 5 games.
Melvin
But I don't see any way that Melvin doesn't win manager of the year right now. Taking the same basic team from last year and getting about 90 wins out of them? And the run differential over-performance will seal the deal.
Engrave it today: "Robert Melvin 2007 Manager of the Year."
by johngordonma on Aug 19, 2007 7:07 AM EDT up reply actions
It sickens me
About the only arugment that I'll give any weight to is that this team doesn't let horrible losses carry over. I'll give Melvin a little bit of the credit there, but I'm pretty sure a lot of that came in when Kirk Gibson was brought on board.
Relievers
IIRC, Medders stuck around for a month after blowing Randy's 3-0 lead with one pitch: he even gave up two homers in his next inning of work following that, but survived until June somehow. I think he had photos of Bob Melvin and Tony Clark. Which he has now handed to Tony Clark. :-)
We need a couple of back-end guys to mop-up blowouts, where conceding a few runs doesn't make any difference. Heck, throw Augie Ojeda out there too. The good thing about today's game is, following on from yesterday, it means the 4.5 Horsemen have all had two full days off: actually, three for Peña, four for Slaten and Cruz. That is vital, as we go down the line towards October.
Padres still losing in the seventh. Colorado ahead of Los Angeles, which works for me too!
This is comment # 192.
Dare I whisper it... maybe during the postseason?
