Gameday Thread, #123: 8/17 vs. Braves

BaseballReference.com preview [opens in new window]
Remember Cormier? Used to play for us, got traded to the Braves for Johnny Estrada? Never amounted to much for us - ERA+ of 71 over his two season in Arizona - and hasn't amounted to much for Atlanta either, with an ERA+ in his two seasons there of...71. At least he's consistent.
Got to feel confident with Webb on the mound, who last allowed a run back when a ground-rule double ricocheted off a mammoth and landed in the La Brea tar-pits. Or maybe it just seems that way. This recent stretch has probably been the best he's ever played, and we'll keep our fingers crossed the streak can end the day still intact, around the 40-inning mark.
Won't be active for this one, as I've got a birthday party to attend. But I leave our NL lead in the hands of our ace, and the ongoing streak of three-figure Gameday Threads in your capable hands...

I love this quote from Livan Hernandez:
Hernandez said he threw up in the bathroom between the first and second.
''I think I ate too late today,'' he said. ''After the first inning, I felt much better.''"
Emphasis added by me. I wonder if by "too late" he meant "too much" and by "today" he meant "everyday".
Now...

I suppose that WAS a bit gratuitous
Byrnes gets on with 2 outs....
Argh!!
Byrnesie with his 33rd stolen bag.
CoJack flies out. So much for that.
Webby comes on to try to make it 34.
Reynolds with a single off Escobar's glove
Whack 'em, Rack 'em and Stack 'em.
Haha....
Webb's 1-hitter
Nice indeed.
Snyder bunts?
Jupton goes for the RBI.
Yes.
WTF?
Damn...
If they walk Drew, (which they are) Webb gets a chance to make his own lead.
How's the humidity there tonight?
By the way...
Webb has gone so far from 2.77 to 2.74.
1-0!!
#23!!!
Errr....
what a season...

Hmmm...
Heck, he could hopefully someday join Jose Canseco, ARod, Barry Bonds, and Alfonso Soriano in the 40-40 club.
That sounds like
:-P
Damn, now I'm hungry.

Well, no...
Yeah, well,
My sister's a south sider too, well, she's a Tucsonan, but an undergrad at UChicago.
Yeah, UofC.
She's a physics major, she'll be a junior this year.

I'm more
Err...
Of course, I'm smack dab in the middle of Wildcat country these days.
Oh...
Yeah.
I'm pretty psyched that we got Big Roy back. I had my picture taken with him in DC the night after they beat UNC to go to the Final Four. He's 7'2" and I'm 5'6", and he was standing uphill, and I was standing downhill, so he looks like he's about twice as tall as me.
How are the Gators looking this year? Going for #3?

Terrifyingly
Oh, that's right.
You'll be fine. Donovan is a damned good coach.
Here's me with Big Roy, by the way.

Heck, if we can survive the Kim experiment, we can survive anything. Remember that we actually came back to WIN one of Kim's awful starts.
Yeah right...

It's pretty humid in Hot'lanta.

Haven't missed much
Anyway, looks like Webbie's perfect game, is....oh no, CY just missed it.

Time to post a fail macro
Webby mowing the grass with Braves
That's ONE way to put it.
By the way, there are two streaks going on here.
19 up, 18 down.
By the way, Webb's gotten some national exposure again due to his streak. The SI.com webpage has a link to the live box score, "Webb puts streak on line against Braves".
Might I just throw two words out there.... Cy Young?

This is already being discussed.
Whoops!

I read the AZ Daily Star, since that's the Tucson paper. Pretty lousy paper though.

So pleased for Webb
What a game
Alternately, we can lose 1-0 tomorrow (Pwnings' line: 7 IP, 3H, 1R, 5K, L) and win Sunday 12-10 after blowing an 8-2 lead
by andrewinnewyork on Aug 17, 2007 10:36 PM EDT reply actions
To show the state of pitching and pitchcounts now
All the more amazing that he's doing this in a climate when complete games are so rare.

The D'backs are the best story of the season in baseball, yet nobody east of Arizona would know it.
by oklahomasooners on Aug 18, 2007 1:00 AM EDT reply actions
Not quite.
Well,
Oh... and the standings...
Dbacks 70-53 --
Padres 65-56 4GB
Dodgers 63-59 6.5GB
Rockies 62-59 7GB
Barry Bonds and the losers 52-70 17.5GB
In the NL as a whole,
Dbacks 70-53 --
Mets 68-53 1GB
Padres 65-56 4GB
Phillies 65-56 4GB
Braves 64-58 5.5GB
Dodgers 63-59 6.5GB
Cubs 62-59 7GB
Rockies 62-59 7GB
Brewers 62-60 7.5GB
...and, those are all the teams in the NL with winning records.
Oh, and we're also tied with the Twins for the longest current win streak: a whopping 3 games. :)
First of all
It's a weird feeling that chances are when I have kids some day I'll be talking about Brandon Webb in reverent tones, waxing poetically about his sinker. I know Randy Johnson was great, but Webb came up with us. Can't get more of a D'back than him.
Yup
RJ is a first ballot HOFer, but you get the feeling that if Webb has a few more years like this, even if he never makes 300 wins (he won't) or even 250, he might make it there someday as well.
Webb is definitely an ultimate Dback: He was there for both ownership teams, was actually managed by Bob Brenly, was the third pitcher his rookie year behind Randy and Curt, has already won 1 Cy Young, has now pitched 42 straight scoreless innings not to mention 3 straight complete game shutouts, and... oh yeah. He was drafted by us. :-D
Mission Accomplished
I see people are still trickling in to post more. I feel like this gameday thread is like a nuclear reactor. Once it goes critical, it's self-sustaining.
Webb
Hmmm....
