Gameday Thread, #123: 8/17 vs. Braves

Brandon Webb (28, RHP, 12-8, 2.77)
Lance Cormier (26, RHP, 0-2, 13.50)

BaseballReference.com preview [opens in new window]

Remember Cormier? Used to play for us, got traded to the Braves for Johnny Estrada? Never amounted to much for us - ERA+ of 71 over his two season in Arizona - and hasn't amounted to much for Atlanta either, with an ERA+ in his two seasons there of...71. At least he's consistent.

Got to feel confident with Webb on the mound, who last allowed a run back when a ground-rule double ricocheted off a mammoth and landed in the La Brea tar-pits. Or maybe it just seems that way. This recent stretch has probably been the best he's ever played, and we'll keep our fingers crossed the streak can end the day still intact, around the 40-inning mark.

Won't be active for this one, as I've got a birthday party to attend. But I leave our NL lead in the hands of our ace, and the ongoing streak of three-figure Gameday Threads in your capable hands...

Here in the hinterlands of Brooklyn
where I look forward to catching Dbacks/Braves on TBS (where I saw the Unit's perfect game), ole Ted Turner has decided to show Everybody Loves Raymond reruns instead. I don't love him. Not one bit.

Well if it makes you feel any better....
In Tucson, a part of the Dbacks' home market, KWBfreakingA is showing reruns of Reba, and Fox Sports AZ is showing Pride Fighting Championships.

I love this quote from Livan Hernandez:
"Livan Hernandez (9-7) shook off a case of nausea to pitch seven innings. He gave up three runs in the first, then allowed only one run over the next six innings.

Hernandez said he threw up in the bathroom between the first and second.

''I think I ate too late today,'' he said. ''After the first inning, I felt much better.''"

Emphasis added by me. I wonder if by "too late" he meant "too much" and by "today" he meant "everyday".

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Webb's 1-hitter
I periodically look back on the MLB video highlights of Webb's one-hit game vs. the Cardinals last season (9/9/06) in amazement (and rue that first-inning?? hit he gave up).  Grace is funny saying one of his "oh dears" after one particularly nasty strikeout pitch by Webb and then Brennaman says you better say it again and then Grace says "OH DEAR!"

what a season...
...what kind of ceiling is there for this kid.  I was hoping one day he'd be a 30-30 guy.  Shoot, he might be a 30-30 guy his rookie season.  Unbelievable.  This guy may well hit 40-50 HRs a year before its all said and done.  It'll be interesting to see what happens to his BA over the years... if he can up the average, or if he'll always be a low BA/high power guy.

by peachy rex on Aug 17, 2007 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah.
I think we came the closest anyone came to beating you guys in the tourney last year.

I'm pretty psyched that we got Big Roy back. I had my picture taken with him in DC the night after they beat UNC to go to the Final Four. He's 7'2" and I'm 5'6", and he was standing uphill, and I was standing downhill, so he looks like he's about twice as tall as me.

How are the Gators looking this year? Going for #3?

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Aug 17, 2007 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Terrifyingly
close - Brewer hit a semi-fortunate layup very late to finally put us in control.  Gack.  No fear about a third - not right away, anyhow; plenty of talent, but the team is extremely young (as in, we'll have one junior on scholarship.)

Oh, that's right.
Didn't you guys lose your whole starting lineup? Or something like that.

Well...
The fact that he's gone through waivers might also mean that he's already going to another team.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Aug 17, 2007 9:09 PM EDT reply actions

Just a thought...
Wily Mo really would start for most teams, and he might just be a cancer in the clubhouse. And the BoSox are paying him 2.2 million dollars, and for a fourth/fifth outfielder, that's just way tooo much.

by LucaMaz3 on Aug 17, 2007 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I remember...
A few years back watching a Dbacks-Reds game, and the TV announcer was talking about what a damned shame it was, because Wily Mo's agent had gotten the Reds to sign a contract with a clause saying he couldn't be sent down to the minors, but he wasn't hitting at all, so he only got to play about half the games. He could have benefited from some more playing time in AAA.

Stupid agents.

Schulte is a dork.
I cannot stand his call about touching them all.  He is very boring throughout the entire game.  Gives us the most inane and obsequious of items not to ponder.  Candiotti isn't much better.  I still miss Victor Rojas.  He always seemed excited about the game and had a much better call than Schulte.

One unmentioned benefit of Webb's scoreless streak is the fact that he is basically giving the entire bullpen a rest every fifth day.  Certainly can't hurt!

Yeah
I was actually thinking about that, too. Keeping those arms fresh.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Errrr....
The Rocket did it in 1998. Hershiser did it in 1988.

Hmmm....
'Stros are beating the Padres 3-1, so that's good. Dodgers are beating the Rox 5-2, and I think that for the first time this year, we actually WANT the Dodgers to beat the Pebbles. Reds creamed the Brew Crew, so that's good. Brewers, who once had the best record in the NL, are now only two games above .500, at 62-60. I guess that 24-10 start didn't rub off on the rest of the season. We made sure the Braves lost, of course, so that's good. Phils won, so we don't like that. Mets beat the Nats, so that's bad, but we're still a full game ahead of New York for first in the NL. Cubs beat the Red Birds (who finally lost), so the Cubs are now #1 in the Central. Hmmm.... maybe that Dbacks-Cubs game I'm going to see next saturday will be a game between two #1 teams. :-P

By the way....
Really sucks to be Lance Cormier tonight, who only allowed a single run until the 8th, but went out for the 8th and gave up Reynolds' homer, PLUS had to pitch against Brandon Webb.

by DbacksSkins on Aug 18, 2007 12:47 AM EDT reply actions

In fact....
Although Webb dropped his ERA from 2.77 to 2.63, even allowing the homers, Cormier's ERA went from 13.50 to 9.90.

Phew...
This GameDay Thread will shortly be available in paperback. :-) Well done, folks: and, especially, Brandon Webb. Plus, the Padres lost. All told, a bloody good night... See you all tomorrow, for more of the same!

It..
It is great that the D'backs are FINALLY getting some exposure. Too bad it takes winning 20 out of 25 and a pitcher that has thrown 42 innings of shutout ball to get some NYY type coverage.

The D'backs are the best story of the season in baseball, yet nobody east of Arizona would know it.

Not quite.
John Donovan wrote an "Inside Baseball" tonight on Webb's nice little streak.

Well,
This has been fun. Time to go replace my car battery. See you all tomorrow, sportsfans.

Oh... and the standings...
With the Dodger's win over the Rox, and the 'Stros win over the Padres, here are the standings:

Dbacks 70-53 --
Padres 65-56 4GB
Dodgers 63-59 6.5GB
Rockies 62-59 7GB
Barry Bonds and the losers 52-70 17.5GB

In the NL as a whole,

Dbacks 70-53 --
Mets 68-53 1GB
Padres 65-56 4GB
Phillies 65-56 4GB
Braves 64-58 5.5GB
Dodgers 63-59 6.5GB
Cubs 62-59 7GB
Rockies 62-59 7GB
Brewers 62-60 7.5GB

...and, those are all the teams in the NL with winning records.

Oh, and we're also tied with the Twins for the longest current win streak: a whopping 3 games. :)

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

First of all
Superbad was Superawesome, for those of you that like gross-out comedies.  Secondly, go D'backs!

It's a weird feeling that chances are when I have kids some day I'll be talking about Brandon Webb in reverent tones, waxing poetically about his sinker.  I know Randy Johnson was great, but Webb came up with us.  Can't get more of a D'back than him.

Yup
Glad to hear the movie was good, I'll have to check it out myself.

RJ is a first ballot HOFer, but you get the feeling that if Webb has a few more years like this, even if he never makes 300 wins (he won't) or even 250, he might make it there someday as well.

Webb is definitely an ultimate Dback: He was there for both ownership teams, was actually managed by Bob Brenly, was the third pitcher his rookie year behind Randy and Curt, has already won 1 Cy Young, has now pitched 42 straight scoreless innings not to mention 3 straight complete game shutouts, and... oh yeah. He was drafted by us. :-D

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Mission Accomplished
New battery in car. :)

I see people are still trickling in to post more. I feel like this gameday thread is like a nuclear reactor. Once it goes critical, it's self-sustaining.

Webb
I had to ditch out of work to get home by 4:30  so I wouldn't miss a single pitch of Webb's.  Not that I mind sneaking out early any day, but any time Webb's on the mound history could be at hand.  Oh, and it does feel good that we have a homegrown Cy Young winner who is on that path once again!

Hmmm....
Good thing my battery DID need to be replaced, but it was my alternator belt, not my battery, that was the problem. :-(

Now 272.

Haha, and Jim was worried about breaking the chain of triple digit gameday threads. We just destroyed the franchise record. :-P

Yeah
Now if only Webb was playing for Reading today....a victory over Everton would make my weekend ;)   Then again we already have an American in goal to keep it scoreless :D

Can we have him
over at Crystal Palace?  Or Reynolds?

I will be there at the game tonight.
We are leaving in a couple of minutes.  The stadium in Atlanta is awesome.  My sons and I are decking our Dbacks shirts and hats and hoping to do alot of cheering and rubbing in another Dbacks victory.  Go Dbacks!
