Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Gameday Thread, #106: 7/28 vs. Braves

John Smoltz (40, RHP, 10-5, 2.78)
Doug Davis (31, LHP, 7-10, 4.13)

BaseballReference .com preview [opens in new window]

Should be tough today, with Smoltz enjoying a good season. Davis will need to control his walks if we're going to stay in this one. No time to write more, as it's just about under way, but I should be around to comment, if you care to join me. Today's poll is on the Hairston trade: good, bad or meh?

Hairston trade...good.../O-Dawgs intro...priceless
He had limited potential and would be stuck in the outfield because he can't play second base well.

The lineup, as announced by O-Dawg, was hilarious. Especially Chris "Naked" Snyder.

Yeah
Chris Young: Black Stallion
DD: is always in La-La-Land

The best was Snyder: always naked in the clubhouse before the game.

no way
Ryan Braun is going to walk home with it at this rate (345ish, 18 bombs and counting in a shortened season for him)...

by johngordonma on Jul 28, 2007 7:05 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I was just wondering
Whether Young is a good lead-off hitter, with his low OBP percentage. I think he may have answered that question with his homer. Good patience to get the count back from 0-2 to a full count. But if Young keeps going deep like that, we might be better off putting him in a spot where he'll come up with runners on base...

by Jim McLennan on Jul 28, 2007 4:06 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think....
eventually he'll be moved down in the order in favor of a prospect down the road. He definitely has 35/40 HR potential.

Francoeur..
I thought DD was going to walk him but he threw a great 3-1 pitch...just to get it smacked for a double.

Good escape by Davis

Hey everyone
Haven't got many  of these this year. Not much TV because of the Extra Innings thing, so I get to watch only when we play braves (TBS) and cubs (WGN). But like earlier commenter said, on Fox today, so let's show the nation what we can do.

Plus, my son was born six days ago and has yet to see the Dbacks lose (well he  has yet to see them at all, but you get the idea).

Pitchers
Quickly learned that Q would swing at pitches down and away, even out of the zone. See that last at-bat against Smoltz. As a result, that's where they pitch him, and you don't get hit by balls when they're feeding you a steady diet of them on the other side of the plate.

He was batting .415
In Tucson, but that's hardly been apparent in any of his at-bats. He looked totally lost in that last plate-appearance. Could it just be something mental, him being a Princeton (or is Yale?) graduate? Is he simply trying too hard? That last time up, he looked to be swinging for the fences with two strikes, when we just needed a bloop single to take the lead.

Along with the Grimsley news does this mean we have a dirty clubhouse? Almost more importantly, will this make enough news to teach people that the most likely candidate for performance-enhancing drugs is not a superstar looking to break a record (though those are plentiful enough) but guys  like Sadler and Grimsley who otherwise would never make a major  league roster?

Unfortunately, I think the only reason the lousy players are getting caught on 'roids isn't b/c they're the only ones on performance enhancers... they are just the only one on 'roids.  The guys making the big bucks, I figure, are on the pricier, undetectable stuff.

The possibility of injury, though slight is certainly non-zero, and I've heard of quite a few cases involving celebrations. Didn't Bill Grammatica, the Cardinals kicker, suffer a season-ending injury after a successful field goal?

Conor Jackson, 1B

CoJack went 3-5 with 3 runs and a walkoff single to make it three games in a row ending in a walkoff.

Honorable Mentions to:
Tony Pena, RP--Pestilence pitched two great innings when the D-Backs needed him most.
Doug Davis, SP--DD threw 7 innings, and though he gave up the lead, he still had a quality start with only 3 walks.

Great win, and I look forward to seeing the streak become 9.
