Gameday Thread, #100: 7/22 vs. Cubs

Yusmeiro Petit (1-2, 3.22 ERA)
Sean Marshall (4-3, 3.43 ERA)

BaseballReference.com preview [opens in new window]

Making up for being late with the previous two Gameday Threads, by being really early with this one - even though it looks to be an 11:20 am start, which is a relatively civilized hour. We're continuing our streak of dodging staff aces: after missing Peavy and Sheets, we don't have to face Zambrano this series, and Derrek Lee has also missed all the games, because he's suspended. Be good to get the win and take the series: we haven't won one on the road since we swept Baltimore five weeks ago. That was also the last time the Cubs dropped a series at home, so we would end both streaks with victory.

Yay!
First to post..... only 11hrs and 20 min before the game starts...
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Good stuff
Reynolds gets a hit with runners in scoring position, driving in Byrnes, and we take a 1-0 lead.

by Jim McLennan on Jul 22, 2007 2:41 PM EDT reply actions

So far so good...
3 up 3 down... the Petit unit looking good so far.

by singaporedbacksfan on Jul 22, 2007 3:07 PM EDT reply actions

Middle of the third
Still 1-0 to AZ, without either team really threatening. Petit looking good so far, we'll see how he does the second time through the order.

by Jim McLennan on Jul 22, 2007 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

End of four
Very little to speak about, thus far. Petit pitching an excellent game thus far: two hits, no walks and four K's through four.

by Jim McLennan on Jul 22, 2007 3:35 PM EDT reply actions

Petit Ks 2
Strikes out Ramirez and Floyd... The offence however is as queit as ever.

Wait... so a leadoff double fails to score??
I'm shocked, shocked, to find out that runners are being left in scoring position.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Drew battles
But can't survive. We leave a leadoff double exactly where it was, and head to the bottom of the sixth, still with a 1-0 lead. How long can Petit go?

by Jim McLennan on Jul 22, 2007 4:02 PM EDT reply actions

80 pitches through five
Be nice to get another one out of him. His spot is up second in the bottom of the seventh for AZ, so that will likely be it.

by Jim McLennan on Jul 22, 2007 4:03 PM EDT reply actions

Bottom of the 7th?
Petit is a turncoat? Just like Orlando Hudson?

Petit Unit is getting the calls.
Shutout thru 6 so far. I like it. How bout we get some insurance runs, boys??
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Excellent job by the Petit Unit
Six innings of shutout ball. On a day when - surprise, surprise - our offense is sputtering, that is absolutely all that could be expected or hoped for. Too late to start a Petit for Rookie of the Year campaign?

by Jim McLennan on Jul 22, 2007 4:09 PM EDT reply actions

If Snyder gets on...
Do you sent Petit up to bunt and hope to get another inning from him?

by Jim McLennan on Jul 22, 2007 4:10 PM EDT reply actions

Never mind
Tracy on deck, so looks unlikely.

by Jim McLennan on Jul 22, 2007 4:11 PM EDT reply actions

Gave up all three runs in the eighth against the Nationals today. ERA for the year of 6.09... Petit's is down to 2.54...

by Jim McLennan on Jul 22, 2007 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Snyder goes deep
Another multi-hit game for him: he's got the average up to .234, and that's his eighth homer of the year. Who'd have thought we'd reach Game #100 with Snyder having more than Tracy, Jackson or Drew?

by Jim McLennan on Jul 22, 2007 4:14 PM EDT reply actions

Good way to come home. Of course, we face Dontrelle Willis tomorrow - but that's not quite the fearsome thought it might have been in previous seasons. He hasn't won a game since May...

Yup, the D-Train takes on Double D
Should be a fun matchup. Willis with his wild delivery, and Doug Davis, the only man who can walk eight people and give up three hits in an inning and not allow a run.

Well,
We went 3-4 on the road trip through Chicago and Milwaukee, and while I wouldn't say I'm HAPPY about it, (we could have taken at least one of those 1 run losses to the Brew Crew) I'm not terribly disappointed, either. After winning the series against the Padres, we're still playing .500 ball after the All Star Break.

We only took 1 out of the 4 in Milwaukee, which is one of the best home teams in MLB, but we won the series against the Cubs, who have been hot lately. The Cubs hadn't lost back to back games in over a month, and we hadn't won them since.... dunno, maybe since mid to late June? Nice little bit of momentum (hopefully) going into the homestand. Maybe we can make a July-August run at the Wild Card.

The Phillies right now are beating the Padres 4-0 in San Diego, and the way that ballpark and that team play, I'd be surprised if they came back with 5 runs. Dodgers are up 2-0 on the Mets, so that's a game to watch too.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

I am very encouraged about the results.
A good solid game for Petit Unit.  Had many Cubbie hitters guessing throughout the day.  5 K's and 3 hits allowed.  A very solid effort.

Defensively, we were almost excellent with O Dog having his ips in the bottom of 7 inning with a ground ball.

Chris Snyder had a very productive day at the plate, 2 for 3, 1 HR and including a walk.

It was very nice to see --Jack also perform within the offense today.  He had that very nice single in the 7 inning with 2 outs to score CY and move O Dog to 3 base.

Still don't like the 15 LOBs.  MReynolds had 3 K's eventhough in the first inning he was instrumental in hitting a 2 out basehit to LF and scored EByrnes.  It is time to consider sending J DFAvanon back to the minors.  His BA is almost to the level of a former temporary catcher from 2001 Mike DeRelease DeFilice stripper beater extraordinaire.

Bring on the Marlins and the Braves for the next 7 home games.

LiveStrong - wear yellow; the truth is out there (X-Files); "Go with throttle up!" (Challenger Space Heroes); "bababooey to you all!" Howard (Sirius) fan.

See who pitched a complete-game shutout of the Padres today? J.D.Durbin - he of the one game and 94.50 ERA for the D-backs early in the season! What happened there? :-S

two of three who would have thunk it.  Our mo is when we get really good pitching we have a chance since the hitters can scrape out two or three runs
if not forget it.  It all adds up to wait until next year.

When we were real hot earlier in the season, and we had insanely timely hitting? Like BA seemingly of .455 or so with RISP?
