Gameday Thread, #100: 7/22 vs. Cubs

BaseballReference.com preview [opens in new window]
Making up for being late with the previous two Gameday Threads, by being really early with this one - even though it looks to be an 11:20 am start, which is a relatively civilized hour. We're continuing our streak of dodging staff aces: after missing Peavy and Sheets, we don't have to face Zambrano this series, and Derrek Lee has also missed all the games, because he's suspended. Be good to get the win and take the series: we haven't won one on the road since we swept Baltimore five weeks ago. That was also the last time the Cubs dropped a series at home, so we would end both streaks with victory.

Stephen Drew with a headsup play
Incidentally, I can't believe that Brandon Lyon's OBA is .254; that seems high. Then again, he did give up the 4 or 5 hits and 3 runs the other day.
I expected to have a tougher time in Chicago.

You're not the only one...
Byrnes draws a walk after starting 1-2
Theriot robs another Dback of a hit...
Death on the mound....
THAT'S getting it done.
Here we go...
Strike 3
Death gives up a single...
Cliff Floyd barely avoids the horse collar, going 0-4 but flying out instead of King.
Well.... I guess that's ONE way to win, toss a four hit shutout in the home ballpark of one of the hottest teams over the past month.
Don't look now, but we've got a win streak. :-P
That was pleasant
Yup, the D-Train takes on Double D
Well,
We only took 1 out of the 4 in Milwaukee, which is one of the best home teams in MLB, but we won the series against the Cubs, who have been hot lately. The Cubs hadn't lost back to back games in over a month, and we hadn't won them since.... dunno, maybe since mid to late June? Nice little bit of momentum (hopefully) going into the homestand. Maybe we can make a July-August run at the Wild Card.
The Phillies right now are beating the Padres 4-0 in San Diego, and the way that ballpark and that team play, I'd be surprised if they came back with 5 runs. Dodgers are up 2-0 on the Mets, so that's a game to watch too.
Sorry....
I am very encouraged about the results.
Defensively, we were almost excellent with O Dog having his ips in the bottom of 7 inning with a ground ball.
Chris Snyder had a very productive day at the plate, 2 for 3, 1 HR and including a walk.
It was very nice to see --Jack also perform within the offense today. He had that very nice single in the 7 inning with 2 outs to score CY and move O Dog to 3 base.
Still don't like the 15 LOBs. MReynolds had 3 K's eventhough in the first inning he was instrumental in hitting a 2 out basehit to LF and scored EByrnes. It is time to consider sending J DFAvanon back to the minors. His BA is almost to the level of a former temporary catcher from 2001 Mike DeRelease DeFilice stripper beater extraordinaire.
Bring on the Marlins and the Braves for the next 7 home games.
Whaddya know...
I mentioned him the other day
