Gameday Thread, #81: 6/29 vs. Giants

Livan Hernandez (32, RHP, 5-5, 4.68)
Matt Morris (32, RHP, 7-4, 3.39)

BaseballReference.com preview [opens in new window]

So, off to SF we go, with a good run until the All-Star break of games against teams below .500. Per Joseph Reaves, we should go at least 9-1. :-) We start with Livan, on an extra day's rest: the Republic today claimed the chances were "better than even" Bonds hits his 750th homer tonight. Given the woeful grasp of statistics this claim holds, I'm all over that bet. D-backs to win, and Bonds stays stuck on #749.

All kinds of irrationality scampers behind my furrowed brow...but I'll be oh so polite.

By the way , do you mind if I park my car here?
It's full of some household items - gas , C4 , nails.
Got an errand to run , I'll be right back. Thanks!

I get to stick around for a little while tonight

I think we take 2 out of 3 this series.
Unfortunately we are facing Morris tonight and this may be the one we lose.

by DiamondbacksWIn on Jun 29, 2007 10:46 PM EDT   0 recs

Who do we root for
SD or LA?  Personally I think SD is a better team so I root for LA to take 2 out of 3.  Maybe they split 2 and rain out the 3rd game.  Perhaps a bunch of extra inning games where the bullpen gets run down.

by DiamondbacksWIn on Jun 29, 2007 10:49 PM EDT   0 recs

Yes!
1 apiece.  Double for Drew!

by DiamondbacksWIn on Jun 29, 2007 10:59 PM EDT   0 recs

Evening folks
Nice to see Victor/suits back: I'd thought he'd plunged himself into McCovey Cove and been eaten by the seals or something. Livan being Livan so far; eight million baserunners, one crossing home plate. Doesn't make for comfortable viewing, but I'm getting used to it!

by Jim McLennan on Jun 29, 2007 11:05 PM EDT   0 recs

Aargh
We just escape one double-play, and then with runners on the corners and one out, Quentin hits into another one. Nice play by Vizquel, it has to be said, but even so: aargh.

by Jim McLennan on Jun 29, 2007 11:21 PM EDT   0 recs

Stephen
Nice to see Drew nab second there, seems like a while since he's stolen a base.  Good time to do it, too.  Let's see if O-Dawg can get him in with a single.

by johngordonma on Jun 29, 2007 11:35 PM EDT   0 recs

working the counts here...
Morris at 70 pitches already.

by johngordonma on Jun 29, 2007 11:39 PM EDT   0 recs

but Tracy
helps him out of the inning.

by johngordonma on Jun 29, 2007 11:40 PM EDT   0 recs

Please score two runs , one for insurance.
Or at least keep hitting to Vizquel...the rest is drudgery televised.

I have to go
Mrs. SnakePit needs to be taken for some soothing dinner. I made the mistake of telling her how much Livan is being paid this year... After that, it's on to see Hardwire and The Strand at Chasers, so it's goodnight from me.

by Jim McLennan on Jun 29, 2007 11:50 PM EDT   0 recs

we're scattering
the diamond with stranded base runners.  Ugh.

by johngordonma on Jun 29, 2007 11:54 PM EDT   0 recs

klesko homers
2-1.
Can't believe Klesko is still even playing... and here is is putting the Giants up on us.

by johngordonma on Jun 30, 2007 12:02 AM EDT   0 recs

Historical/Sentimental Note
That was the 44th ball hit into the cove named for a player whose number was , in fact , #44.
Zito! Awwwwwright! Now we're back to....oh no.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
I don't care if we got 0-20 against the Dodgers. I really hate the Giants. (And their obnoxious fans and their annoying announcer.... grrrrr)
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Yes!
Thanks Dave Roberts... We'll take it anyway we can get it!

Rising , like a carp...
In that case , please go 0 - 20...so we can test that theory.
Zito! Awwwwwright! Now we're back to....oh no.

well....
Maybe I exaggerated. A little.

But either way, I hate the Gints.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

argh...
Bonds with that STUPID earring again.... I thought he quit wearing that.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Uh ,
not to be too obnoxious , but...that's #45 into the cove.

by singaporedbacksfan on Jun 30, 2007 12:42 AM EDT   0 recs

hi guys...
just wanna know why melvin let gornandez pitch to barry.... pfff....

by Muu on Jun 30, 2007 12:46 AM EDT   0 recs

Did Orlando Hudson get hurt?
If not I'm about to give up racking my brains to think of a reason why BoMel would substitute Ojeda for him.

I'm also pissed off about his general refusal to allow CoJack play in any close game pass the seventh inning.  You know, you may have need for pinch hitters, but I suppose it's happened enough now that I've sadly gotten used to it.

by dahlian on Jun 30, 2007 12:52 AM EDT   0 recs

Because...
Augie is a better fielder, O-dog just hasn't had it with the fielding this yr.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Jun 30, 2007 1:05 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Seriously?!?
That's the only reason for the switch?

In a one-run game BoMel removed his number three hitter who, although his defense may be slipping a bit, has been legit gold glove man his entire career?

To put in Augie Freakin' Ojeda?!?

That's it.  I'm calling for BoMel's head on a pike right here and now.

by dahlian on Jun 30, 2007 1:09 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Enought hyperbole
Ojeda's not that bad.
Stay grindy, my friends.

by soco on Jun 30, 2007 3:15 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes he is.
He may be a good glove man at second base, but he is the very definition of a bad major league ballplayer.

by dahlian on Jun 30, 2007 8:00 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

yeah..
and BY THE WAY, have you even SEEN CoJack field??? Even if Tony Clark were simply CoJack + 15 years, (which he kinda is) experience helps.

If we're up by 1 run, I say put all our defensive players out there. BoMel IS now 18-9 (I think) in 1 run games. Can always pinch hit for them if the need arises.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Jun 30, 2007 6:44 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It's a decision I disagree with.
I personally don't find CoJack's fielding to be that much worse than Clark's and that not only does his bat make up for it but it's just a good idea to let your young players have the opportunity to succeed in late and close situation rather then consistently be told that they are an obstacle to the team's ability to win.  However, it's one that I can at least understand as justifiable in some baseball sense.

I refuse to give any such quarter to the belief that Augie Ojeda is a better baseball player in late and close situations then Orlando Hudson.

by dahlian on Jun 30, 2007 7:58 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Additionally....
To quote Just Me, (and I'm not sure of his numbers as I haven't checked) Orlando Hudson this year has the 2nd most errors among NL 2nd basemen.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Jun 30, 2007 6:49 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

And yet...
things like url=mgl's UZR numbers[/url] are saying that Hudson is having one of the top twenty defensive seasons in all of baseball.  Plain and simple, errors are just a poor means of evaluating defensive ability.

This move strikes me as nothing but completely short-sighted by BoMel.  It's one thing if your second-basemen is a geriatric like Jeff Kent whose previously average defense is quickly slipping into the abysmal range.  But this is Orlando Hudson.  Not only is he the number three hitter in our lineup having the second best offensive season on the team, he does have legitimate credentials as one of the top 2b glove men in the league.  But now that he's just happened to string a few errors together this season Melvin is giving his defense the vote of no confidence and saying that even though he is a good enough hitter to be put in the three spot, his defense is such a blight that in close games he should be pulled out to be replaced by a man who's been out of major league baseball for two years.

This is nothing but the shiny new toy syndrome. Ojeda is fresh and new, so much so that BoMel has yet to look past his shiny .304 batting average (80 points above his career average) or the above-average glove work to realize that he isn't even half the player that Orlando Hudson is and that he really shouldn't be penalizing Hudson for what are essentially scoring flukes.

by dahlian on Jun 30, 2007 7:49 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Not to add fuel to the fire or anything...
But Ojeda's been out of major league baseball for THREE years.

Additionally, yes, one can make the argument that many errors ARE scoring flukes. However, that doesn't explain why O-dawg this year has TWO MORE THAN ANY ONE ELSE ON THE TEAM... (He has 9, Drew has 7 @ shortstop)

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Jun 30, 2007 4:28 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Also,
Jim. Nice Bet.

nice drama
...would have been better? if game was tied.

Nice job Livo.

by cavscout on Jun 30, 2007 1:15 AM EDT   0 recs

Win!!!
Great job by the pitchers.. though the homer to Bonds was... unnecessary.

by singaporedbacksfan on Jun 30, 2007 1:16 AM EDT   0 recs

Why We're Not Contending...
It's called an "Insurmountable lead" , and we haven't had one on a loooooooong time.
It's Bonds' fault...he needs to recognize the lack of productivity in his teammates , and step up and cover their sorry asses by homering each and every time he bats.
Nothing else will do. Apparently.
Zito! Awwwwwright! Now we're back to....oh no.

by suitsmetoATnT on Jun 30, 2007 1:16 AM EDT   0 recs

yeah
Guys are just too old, that's all. Honestly, Bonds is a still a decent player, but if he didn't have now 750 HRs, he'd have been playing DH for someone years ago. He fills the seats, so the Gints have kept him. (And for sentimental reasons) But his contract is holding back San Fran.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Jun 30, 2007 1:31 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

"You're" not contending
because "you" suck.
Stay grindy, my friends.

Sigh...
"Devolution" personified...take a rest , pal.
You must be weary after all that research and development...
