Gameday Thread, #80: 6/28 vs. Dodgers

Randy Wolf (30, LHP, 8-6, 4.32)
Randy Johnson (43, LHP, 4-2, 3.52)

BaseballReference.com preview [opens in new window]

This should be interesting, as we get to see how Randy's back holds up, now the herniated disc in his back has flared up. This will be a test of what we might expect for the rest of the season from Johnson: we'll see whether those days of six-inning starts will seem like marathons. Webb's seven innings gave the pen a bit of a rest, but we'll see how soon they're needed. We should be able to take Wolf, and come away with a split in the series. It's less whether we'll be feeling Randy, as how Randy is feeling...

And with a deep breath...
Here we go. Furcal leads off with a single, so we'll see right away what Johnson has got from the stretch - which was the big problem when his back was bothering him last year with the Yankees.

On the other hand...
Martin homers. 2-0 Dodgers. We can certainly get that back off Wolf, but it's not the start I hoped for from Johnson.

Son of a..
.. at least we're not facing Penny today.

Uh Oh
That's not Randy '07.  That more resembles Randy '06.

There we go
I stop to track down a dog Latin translationas a favour  and arrive late to a horrible score.

Dammit
Evening All,

Poor command there from RJ :( as Oklahoma said, least we're not facing Penny :D

Not good so far...
Three hits and Johnson plunks Gonzo - though it was more of a nick, really. Sadly. Two on for Loney. Brace yourselves...

At least...
That one is finally over, had a sinking feeling when i saw that last contact :D

by Wimb on Jun 28, 2007 6:56 PM EDT reply actions

Phew
Loney lined out. But hardly the dominating return we were expecting. Wonder how Nippert is feeling? :-(

Another opposing pitcher...
Another hit... Is this some kind of union requirement being imposed on our rotation?

Reynolds
Where's Reynolds gone?  I mean, I know he made a big jump to the Majors, and I know rookies tail off after the league sees them a little, but he's absolutely vanished.

Pinch-hit HR the day before yesterday?
Not playing every day now. A difficult jump to make.

Another two left on base
Johnson posts a zero, but it looks like the Dodgers are trying to surpass yesterday's total for stranding runners.

Thanks, but
Thanks for the response, Jim.  Trouble is, that answer just doesn't cut it for me.  I'm sure it's harder now that Reynolds is splitting time with Tracy.  But that platoon is doing our club no good.  Reynolds has been as un-productive off the bench as Tracy has been against lefties.  Let Tracy (try to) hit lefties, let Reynolds get some regular time at triple A.

4-0 after three innings
The question is, would Livan 2.0 have been the better option today, rather than rushing Johnson back?

by Jim McLennan on Jun 28, 2007 7:40 PM EDT reply actions

Okay...
Two on, no-one out. Got to get at least one, ideally a lot more here.

by Jim McLennan on Jun 28, 2007 7:43 PM EDT reply actions

okay
got something going here with Byrnes and Hairston

Not quite what we wanted
Ojeda K's, Hudson hits into his eight-millionth double-play of the year. :-(

by Jim McLennan on Jun 28, 2007 7:46 PM EDT reply actions

Johnson gone
Top of the fourth and Nippert is already in. :-(

by Jim McLennan on Jun 28, 2007 7:49 PM EDT reply actions

6-1 now
Randy's dealing. Unfortunately, not our one. :-(

2 runs this inning..
Not bad... but we need more to win! I'm keeping the faith.

Reynolds
Someone made the comment about him "vanishing" above.  He's hitting 4 for 14 since going 0 for 10.  .285 isn't vanished.  He also has 4 RBI.  All 4 hits are extra base hits too.  Two doubles, a triple, and a homer.

I think the only complaint I have is that he strikes out a lot.  On the other hand, that happens because he's being aggressive.  Aggressive is the correct approach for him, from what I've seen.
