Scherzer signed

Another deadline deal, but we finally came to terms with our first-round pick, according to the Republic:

The Diamondbacks got a deal done with last year's first round pick, right-hander Max Scherzer, agreeing to terms in the final hour before Wednesday night's deadline. The parameters of the deal were not immediately available, but it's believed to be a major-league deal worth at least $4 million.

Cool.
I wonder how much our streak had to do with it?

He sees that all of a sudden we're one of the top teams in the league, so he wants on board.

About the "Estimate"
Is this about what Boras was looking to get , what we wanted to pay or in the middle? I am guessing the answer to that tells us which party blinked first so to speak.
I just hope he now lives up to his promise.

blink
I'm sure both sides will spin this their way, but it looks to me like the D-Backs blinked, not Boras.  It's a very similar contract to Drew (5 years $5.3ish mill, I think?).

Looks to me like the D-Backs caved here, which I think is fine.  I'd rather throw that kind of money at a prospect with Max's upside than a middlin' reliever... but I certainly could be proven wrong here.  It is a lot of money, no doubt.

Looks like a compromise to me
D backs were somewhere around 2.75-3 million, Boras/Scherzer were pushing for something around 5.5-6.0, and they settled in the 4.0-4.5 range.
Thats about as close to meeting in the middle as you can get.  Neither side caved. They compromised and did the right thing.

I didn't think they would get there. I was on record as being pretty sure Scherzer was going back into the draft. So glad to be wrong, yet again.  ;)

Now the question of when?
I know I read that he was in the independent league and was doing 'okay' so I guess the question is this, where does he start and how fast does he rise?

I know Baseball America had him at a closer/reliever instead of a starter, but I wonder how he will be groomed in the minors.

This could be a powerful young rotation next year with Webb, Pwnings, Sherzer, Johnson (last year of his deal) and Davis with Gonzalez/Gonzalez and Yesmit battling to get in.

He will not be a starter
He's definitely a closer and my guess is that he gets put in Lancaster to start off.  I won't discount completely that he may be in Phoenix next year, but I would be shocked.  IMO this is a questionable signing if they think he'll be a starter and a potentially great signing if he can hit the majors in the next couple years as a reliever.

Great signing!
Finance major with alot of upside, if he's healthy. With the new draft rules, hopefully this is the end of the last minute deals. If  management did caved in, it appears that he is a quality pitcher. Position is secondary to quality. Years ago, the Oakland A's drafted four pitchers in round one and came up empty handed. This signing was a very good addition to our young pitching propects. Just think, in a few days the Dbacks get to hopefully add more quality players to the organization. Good chance the first pick is a pitcher?
