It's Jurassic Park 3 today - for the third time this season, a new record will be set for the oldest lefty pitching match-up in baseball history. Last time out, the Phillies began the game by whiffing six straight times against Johnson, so I imagine they won't be looking forward to this. That was the infamous game where Medders' first pitch was dispatched for a game-losing grand-slam - after last night, our reliever is already on this ice. Any repeat performance could lead to Medders being left on the tarmac at the airport.

Our offense has really kicked it up of late, and as noted, we have, very quietly, positioned ourselves nicely. If the season were to end today, we'd be in the Wild Card spot, and facing the Mets in the first round of the playoffs. So maybe the weekend series will be a precursor of things to come...

Just another six innings of one-hit ball. He's being very economical so far (61 pitches through six!), so I doubt he'll get pulled like last time, especially as our bullpen has been a bit flaky of late.

What would it be without a little drama? Have to say, Valverde pitched very well. That one hit was a bit of a bleeder, but he didn't give in, even when facing Ryan Howard.

Seven in a row. Best streak in over a year, and we haven't gone longer since the June 2003 Baby Backs won 12 in a row. And we have the reigning Cy Young winner pitching on Friday...

the drama in the 9th

was organized by Mark Reynolds. He purposely caused Hudson to make the error and cause Burrell's hit to find a hole just so he could have the game winning home run.

He figured enough was enough, so Howard lined into a DP.

big win

This win showed me a lot about this team. I suspected this would be one we would drop -- we had already clinched the series, and just dropped one of our best offensive nights on the year.

Thrilled to see this team have the focus to grab this victory. Now we shall see what we can do in NYC. Our middle relievers cannot have the same lapses they've been having... and our team needs to prove (especially after being beaten down by the Mets a few weeks ago) that we can play with the big boys.
