Gameday Thread, #54: 5/29 vs. Phillies

Micah Owings, RHP (3-1, 4.10)
Jon Lieber, RHP (2-2, 3.45)

After yesterday's frightening little episode, we'll see what happens today - especially if this ends up being a save situation. Owings was brilliant last time out, pitching his first career complete game, and will need to be on his toes against one of [per AZDarkKnight! :-)] the best hitting-teams in the league. Lieber has been pretty good too, so this is probably one of those games on the trip I'm less optimistic about us winning. But you never know: that is, after all, why they play the games!

95 degrees here
Up to 103 by Friday. Summer's coming. :-)

Cold here in Lancaster ;)

Hey. that's not bad...
Yahoo Gameday still reckons the game hasn't actually started. A pleasant surprise to go to mlb.com and see we're 2-0 up!

by Jim McLennan on May 29, 2007 7:31 PM EDT reply actions

Today's lineup
A little late:
  1. E. Byrnes lf.301
  2. C. Jackson 1b .277
  3. O. Hudson 2b .284
  4. M. Reynolds 3b .435
  5. S. Drew ss .238
  6. C. Young cf .278
  7. A. Callaspo rf .212
  8. M. Montero c .197
  9. M. Owings p .143
Callaspo replacing Quentin in right. That's interesting. Still, he got a sacrifice fly, so we'll let him off.

by Jim McLennan on May 29, 2007 7:33 PM EDT reply actions

Now...
Hudson could really open up the game with a hit here.

Yeah i just noticed that Jim

good start again, i must be in a coma no other way to explain all this offence

Regression to the mean.
There was no way these guys were gonna hit as bad as they were.

I just didn't expect it to happen this quickly.

Today's Mark Reynolds fact
Mark Reynolds does not sleep. He waits.

Boo!
Stephen Drew made an out. :-( Still, fun while it lasted!

Phew
Phillies get too much bat on ball for my liking, Phils strand 2 in the 2nd.

Not bad
One out in the third, and every starter bar our pitcher already has a hit. Shame about the double-play: Montero's a bit liable to hit into those lately, it seems.

Owings....
....51 pitches already. I Hope the 'pen is fit and ready to go

The only real strike from the at bat gets us the third out of the third.

He's been all over the place.
Something tells me we aren't gonna see another CG from him.

Would be nice to see the offense throw up a few more runs and put this thing out of reach.

Owings at 88 pitches through four...
He won't last long. Lieber is only at 62, though they've both faced 20 hitters, and Lieber is 5-1 down. Go figure...

That's probably it for Owings.
He's damn lucky to get through 5 with only 1 run on the board. He was wild and all over the place, and put alot of baserunners on.

But just 1 run, so we'll take it.

by Goose on May 29, 2007 8:51 PM EDT reply actions

What? And now he's out?
Melvin let him bat, even though he was taking him off the mound.

I mean, yeah it worked, he hit a triple. But why?

by Goose on May 29, 2007 8:58 PM EDT reply actions

Interesting decision
Owings is a heck of a batter, by all accounts - didn't he pinch-hit the other day? No reason to burn a pinch-hitter in the situation, for a moderate gain, especially when you're up by four and there are two men out. I can kinda see the logic there.

by Jim McLennan on May 29, 2007 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Good point
And according to the Republic he was a slugger in high school and actually cares about his at bats unlike most other pitchers.

Good work by Medders
Always a little nervous, but when he's not letting them hit the ball out of the yard, he usually does okay. As long as there are no runners on base, we should be fine: like to see him go two if possible.

Taken out by Medders...
Both went to field a bunt, looks like Medders knee or hip cracked Reynolds in the head. He's totally out on the grass.

Holy crap. That was ugly.
Good job Medders! You fucking idiot! You just KO'd our hottest hitter!

Scary stuff...
Reynolds moving, but helped off between two coaches, looking very groggy. Be surprised if we see him tomorrow, hopefully he'll be okay for the Mets series.

I guess if Reynolds is Chuck Norris, that must make Brandon Medders Jack Bauer... ;-S

by Jim McLennan on May 29, 2007 9:32 PM EDT reply actions

Don't get too carried away.
Medders charged with another huge hit, only this time it didn't leave the park (would be especially bad for Reynolds if his head had done so). How emblematic of his season thus far.

by Azreous on May 29, 2007 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Reminds me...
Of the game in September 2002 when Luis Gonzalez collided with Tony Womack. We rolled over in the playoffs without Gonzo, and the separated left shoulder was his bete noire from there on.

by Jim McLennan on May 29, 2007 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.
And Gonzo, while already in decline thanks to age and perhaps the lack of steroids, was worse for wear from then on out. It also killed what tiny shred of fielding ability he had left, it seemed.

Would be a shame for a young guy like Reynolds to miss any significant time on something like this. Even getting taken out by Utley's slide in the 7th would've been better than that.

Get the A-bullpen out there.
That'd be Cruz, Lyon and Peña. Medders and Slaten have faced five hitters this inning, and retired one of them. This is now a save situation, right here, right now.

Not so long ago, this looked like a disaster about to unfold. Now, we have a seven-run lead and it's a bit of a laugher. The TV feed just went out though. I had to go have dinner - any word on Reynolds?
