Gameday Thread, #27: 4/30 vs. Dodgers

Brandon Webb, RHP (1-1, 3.60)
Randy Wolf, LHP (3-2, 4.20)

The Dodgers finally squeaked past the Padres in the final game of their series, but it took them seventeen innings to do it, so their bullpen will be seriously depleted tonight. The LA starter, Wolf, has been remarkably consistent, throwing exactly six innings in each of his previous starts, but the Dodgers may want him to go deeper than that. It's up to our hitters to stop that. This time, LA also get to face the front end of our rotation, rather than EdGon and an injured Pwnings, as when they swept us at Chase.

We'll be hoping to reverse that trend, in the same way we did to the Giants, and got to feel optimistic about our chances tonight, Webb taking the mound and beginning to settle into solid mid-season form. A win tonight will take us atop the division; unlike yesterday, our fate is entirely in our own hands. If you're interested seeing ourselves as other see us, good discussion over at Dodger Thoughts, in the comments section, where people talk about whether AZ is the "real deal". The answer? Maybe...

Today's Lineup
  1. Young, CF
  2. Drew, SS
  3. Hudson, 2B
  4. Byrnes, LF
  5. Tracy, 3B
  6. Clark, 1B
  7. Quentin, RF
  8. Snyder, C
  9. Webb, P
As expected, no Jackson. Tracy gets the start despite the fact that a LHP is starting against us.

Hudson still in there...
The iron man. 26 games down, two thousand and something to go. :-) Still, as long as he keeps hitting, I've no complaints. We'll see how Byrnes' day off has helped. Maybe he's just getting in his usual post-All Star break slump early!

Did Young homer?
I just got the game on and we're already up 1-0.

Shame Young didn't...
Swap those two at-bats around: striking out to lead off the game, then homering with two men on. Still, can't have everything: I'll take a 1-0 lead, and Webb looking mightily impressive. Looking forward to him facing Gonzo...

by Jim McLennan on Apr 30, 2007 10:35 PM EDT   0 recs

Classic moment
Hudson at first, gabbing away at 340 per minute: Nomar beside him, utterly disinterested. Bet Garciaparra was glad when Hudson strolled to second on a fly-ball hit to Gonzo. Says something about the noodle-armed LF for LA, that O-Dawg didn't even have to slide...

There goes the no-hitter
I'll settle for a one-hitter CG shut out though.

What the hell...
...were Sutton and Grace talking about during the bottom of the third?  I know they will get distracted and talk a bunch of other crap during games, but it's generally at the end, maybe 7th or 8th during kind of boring parts.  I spent the inning laughing more than I did watching the game.

Is it just me...
Or is the discovery that Todd Walsh was in the film Can't Buy Me Love, disturbing to anyone else? He was playing a sports commentator. Which is a bit of a stretch, really...

Wasted..
2 man on and no outs... but Snyder strikes out.

Now for Young to do the damage
A second chance to pad the lead, now's a good time to get another homer.

by singaporedbacksfan on Apr 30, 2007 11:04 PM EDT   0 recs

We are hitting Wolf hard...
But without any runs to show for it... Come on Dbacks!

by singaporedbacksfan on Apr 30, 2007 11:07 PM EDT   0 recs

Plunked with a purpose?
Grace seems to think Wolf hitting Young was on purpose, payback for the homer. Interesting. Drew flies out deep with the bases-loaded: we seem to have been hitting the ball hard, but not finding the gaps. Still only a one-run lead, but let's hope Webb can keep pitching like he has been.

by Jim McLennan on Apr 30, 2007 11:07 PM EDT   0 recs

you seem a bit delirious
you guys keep talking like you expect us to win by more than 1 run. I think you guys are getting a bit optimistic. :P

But I've got a doctor's note...
These one-run games are just too stressful to be enjoyed - except in the warm afterglow of victory. At the time, they're hell. ;-P

by Jim McLennan on Apr 30, 2007 11:15 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Even if so..
No point retaliating, as the best way to do so is to get into first place. And I don't think the Dodgers are that petty, but you'll never know.. :)

by singaporedbacksfan on Apr 30, 2007 11:13 PM EDT   0 recs

Byrnes doubles in Hudson
Finally runs to show for the hits!

by singaporedbacksfan on Apr 30, 2007 11:18 PM EDT   0 recs

Double your pleasure...
Especially, when that double goes down the left-field line. :-) Hudson could have hopped around the bases from first to score, and still beaten the throw delivered by their left-fielder, whoever he is...

by Jim McLennan on Apr 30, 2007 11:18 PM EDT   0 recs

strike zone?
is this guys zone a bit wide or does mlb just not know what they're talking about with gameday?

Seems more high...
Grace and Sutton think he's a pitcher's umpire, which does usually mean a big zone.

At the rate Wolf's pitching
The Dodgers bullpen will have to see a couple of innings of work.. must be real tough on them.

I'm pretty sure the bullpen is why they didnt pinch hit for him last inning cause he seems to be spent. 100+ pitches

Brian Price may be a good pitching coach.
But he also is bad if your pitchers are hurting. He fully believes in "pitching through the pain". I remember when he was in Seattle that he told Joel Pineiro in 2002 to "tough it out" when he was hurt. He ended up missing a few months.

Suddenly lost the strike zone... must have cooled down after sitting around for so long.

by singaporedbacksfan on May 1, 2007 12:23 AM EDT   0 recs

Webb suddenly lost it.
That was scary. Cruising along...then boom, the wheels fell off, and he was lucky only to give up one run. But, hey, we'll take it. Nice to see a D'backs lineup with only the pitcher batting below .220 now. Seems we've not seen that all season!

by Diamondhacks on May 1, 2007 12:31 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, he probably should be.
But with Young's speed and the fact that he was 2 bombs and 3 RBI's tonight, it isn't gonna happen anytime soon.

Plus if Young keeps hitting like this, I won't complain a whole lot.

Callaspo in at 2nd base.
Eveland in the game.

Heh, Melvin is so confident in the win that he let Webb bat despite the fact that he wasn't going to pitch.
