Gameday Thread, #26: 4/29 vs. Giants

Matt Morris, RHP (3-0, 2.49)
Randy Johnson, LHP (0-1, 10.80)

If we win today, and the Dodgers lose, we'll be top of the National League West again. Okay, so it depends on another team - specifically, San Diego beating Los Angeles, but it's a bit of a comeback from where we were last week. Be very interesting to see how Johnson looks in this start: the first one was very definitely a case of him hitting the wall in the fifth inning, so we'll be hoping he avoid that. He needs to get a decent strike-zone from the home-plate umpire as well. The opposing starter, Matt Morris, has been almost impeccable too, so should make for a good game.

The last time we lost was the last time Johnson took the mound: here's to us breaking that, running our streak to five, and doing our part to end the day leading the division. Should be around for most of it, if perhaps a little late arriving, since we'll be catching up on 24...

Why in the world was Webb skipped ?
unless i got my numbers off, he should be starting today, NOT randy..

by unnamedDBacksfan on Apr 29, 2007 6:26 PM EDT reply actions

Afternoon...
Late to the party: Mrs. Snakepit dozed off on my arm. :-) Webb got pushed back a day to make room for Johnson last time: his last rehab start was the same day as Webb appeared, so something had to give. Should be fairly standard from now.

Johnson pitched pretty well: better stuff, better stamina. A bit unlucky, giving up an unearned run early. I wish we had really taken apart Morris when we had the chance but over-aggression on the base paths cost us. That'll be the theme of tomorrow's Melvin is an Idiot section of proceedings.... :-)

Looks like...
One last chance to get to Morris. Bases loaded, one out...

That's odd...

Maybe my TV
was biased.  or they could be updating as the game unfolds.  this was before Tony clark killed the rally and Omar hit his double too.

35,000 bobbleheads from last night are nodding in unison... 5-3 AZ on a Dawg-double.

Clark GIDPs
Is it just me, or does he seem to do that more often than anyone else on the team?

by Jim McLennan on Apr 29, 2007 6:55 PM EDT reply actions

Yes...and no.
That was Clark's third. Tracy leads the team with five, but he has twice as many at-bats as Clark.

no it's not
he GIDP's a lot of times =/ but no more than Snyder heaueahioeaea

Johnson solid
Six innings, three runs, two earned. Seven hits and a walk, five K's, if I remember. Definitely better than last time out, but still looks to be a step or two behind.

by Jim McLennan on Apr 29, 2007 7:10 PM EDT reply actions

Wonder who'll pitch the ninth for AZ?
Assuming it's still a one-run game: Melvin won't be dumb enough to use Valverde again, Peña is already used, and probably won't go two. Lyon would seem the obvious candidate, with Slaten to hand if Bonds pinch-hits.

by Jim McLennan on Apr 29, 2007 7:11 PM EDT reply actions

Sweeney pinch hitting
Because you'd pitch to Barry...and we don't want that , do we?

Hey, turnabout's fair play...
The six contests between AZ-SF this season have been decided by a total of seven runs, including five straight one-run games. 3-3 seems about right! See you again June 5-7. I'll bring the Rolaids. :-)

Phew...
That was - once again - far too close for comfort. Twelve of our fifteen wins thus far have been by two runs or less, eight by one run.

Padres and Dodgers still slugging it out in San Diego: bottom of the 13th, tied at four. That'll help weaken the LA bullpen: 5.2 innings of work thus far. Works for me...

Good news on Jackson
AP Report
Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Conor Jackson left Sunday's game against the San Francisco Giants with cuts on his right hand after he was thrown out on a headfirst slide into home plate. X-rays were negative, and Jackson could return to the lineup when the Diamondbacks play at the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night. Jackson was hurt in the second inning. Tony Clark replaced him at first base.

Nice!

Padres and Dodgers tied in the 15th inning. Come on Padres, give us first place!

I just got home from a college freshman preview in Saint Louis and at the same hotel there was a convention for Rawlings. They had one of the gold glove awards there. SUPER COOL!!!! I can't believe O-Dawg has to where that all year though it looks really heavy. ;)

diamondbacks win.

by gary ho on Apr 29, 2007 9:28 PM EDT reply actions

Dodgers win too...
Takes them until the seventeenth inning to do it though, with their bullpen seeing 10.2 frames of work. So, let's see the D-backs taking lots of pitches early, and working the count against Wolf, so we can get into the bullpen.
