Dbacks Daily 10/9/07 - Positive Spin

Devin said he was thinking of going into anti-media lockdown (presumably to keep himself from choking every 20 minutes, rightfully), I figured it'd be a good thing to have a 'Daily for today and tomorrow with emphasis on the * positive * stories. So when we post links in here, let's mark them as thumbs-up or thumbs-down so people can avoid them if they want to. :) All neutral or thumbs-up things here on the front page.

Game times have been announced for Games 1-6 according to the Republic.

  1. Thu Oct 11, Chase Field, 5:37pm PT (8:37 ET)
  2. Fri Oct 12, Chase Field, 7:18pm PT (10:18 ET)
  3. Sun Oct 14, Coors Field, 5:37pm PT (8:37 ET)
  4. Mon Oct 15, Coors Field, 7:18pm PT (10:18 ET)
  5. * Wed Oct 17, Coors Field, 5:37pm PT (8:37 ET)
  6. * Fri Oct 19, Chase Field, 5:37pm PT (8:37 ET)
  7. * Sat Oct 20, Chase Field, TBD
Notes in the Republic talk mainly on Jeff Salazar, and his connection to the Rockies. He still likes those guys but he's very happy where he is now and certainly doesn't want to see them celebrate again! Also note that the rotation after Webb is not yet set (at least, not yet announced); Micah Owings is set to throw in the Instruction League game today and would be a likely candidate for Game 4. Brief un-baseball related Q and A with Justin Upton. Nick Piecoro writes about the rise of the NL West (nothing there we didn't already know) and there's also a small story about the lack of "Dbacks Fever."

Also not announced is anything about the NLCS roster; that'll be tomorrow, and it sounds like there might be a roster move announced. Both teams welcome the rest (Hurdle was out yesterday with the flu) and BoMel, of course, is hoping it helps cool the Rockies down from their hot streak. The Rockies hope the break lets them get back some of their injured players. Dbacks get an A in chemistry: team chemistry that is. This is a complete team they've assembled here, good guys without egos and where everyone contributes.

From mediocre players to marvelous managers come this group in the NLCS. Francona, Wedge, Melvin and Hurdle all had quiet playing careers but are finally getting their World Series chances as managers. Know what else is mediocre? The payrolls of these CS teams. Okay, so Boston's #2, but the rest of us are at least 21 spots behind that! Cleveland's #23, Colorado's #25, and Arizona's #26. It makes some interesting comparisons to football and basketball as well.

That's it for now, more tomorrow.

So... what's everybody watching on TV tonight? I'm lost without a baseball game.

[Updated 10/10/07]
Some stories from today:

Tony Clark, Father Snake Column on Tony Clark and what his presence has meant to this young team. Bob Melvin plans the same 4-man rotation as the Cubs series but still no word on the final roster.

Some good features on Livo and Mark Reyonlds (really a "year in review" thing for him). Also sort of a year in review on the injuries and their replacements from Double- and Triple-A. The Republic reports on the growing Rockies rivalry and the homegrown talent on both squads.

Off Season Viewing Habbits
The end of the baseball season generally intersects with the Oscar watch, the new TV season, and Futbol Americano for me.

I work Monday Nights, so Sunday is football day in my family.  We have A Pick Em league we all do, so it gets competitive over Sunday Dinner.

The Oscar watch is always fun and i'm predicting a directing Oscar for Ben Affleck for Gone Baby Gone.

And on new TV series, Viva Laughlin should be premiering soon.  Something about Hugh Jackman singing on weekly television seems hilarious to me.

Listen to me, I got no reason to lie to you, don't make the same mistakes I made when I was young. F- a lotta women kid, not just one woman, a lotta women.

Salary Cap article
good stuff but he did goof once. He said if the BoSox go down then that will make 8 yrs. 8 different champions but on the contrary the DBacks achieved that feat a mear 6 yrs. ago
Tippecanoe and Pena too! (let's hope pena doesn't die after 30 days in office)

TV?
Impact Zone Wrestling at The Sets. Now, that's entertainment! Though I'm very glad the NLDS didn't go to a game five... :-)

Habits
The positive emphasis is much appreciated.  My annoyance level is approaching highs I didn't expect to arrive until the presidential primaries next year.

TV-wise, tonight was Bones and then Good Eats.  I don't know what I'm going to do tomorrow, Wednesday is one of my off-days, televisionly speaking....

I'm not superstitious- it's bad luck.

Ratings
According to this article, TBS claims LDS ratings were solid, even though the Dbacks and Rockies are small market teams that swept, and they're hoping it'll continue into the LCS.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

4 man rotation
Really hope that is what Melvin sticks with.  With how Owings has been going (and he has pitched particularly well on extra rest this year), I think they need to roll Owings out there and let him do his thing.  He'll be fine.  Not to mention the fact that almost every starter in modern baseball history is AWFUL on 3 days rest.  Put Webb out there on full rest and trust Owings to do his thing.  Of course, I'd actually rather have Owings toss game 2 or 3... but that's asking for too much, I know.

Games 5, 6 & 7
I read somewhere online that Webb would go in Game 5, Davis in Game 6 and Livo in Game 7 should the series go the distance.  Doesn't that sound weird?  Wouldn't we want Webb in a Game 7?

by TwinnerA on Oct 10, 2007 11:17 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Except
Webb in Game 7 would require Webb to pitch Game 4 on short rest.  Which has pretty much been shown to be a pretty bad idea all season by most any pitcher that's tried it- ask Jake Peavy.

Yep
According to the rotation announced today, Owings is the #4 starter and the rotation starts over again after that.

I'm concerned
about Livan in this series.  He benefited from the free swinging Cubs in the first round but I'm very concerned about having him throw the 3rd and (potentially) 7th game.  This patient lineup I have a feeling will be pretty hard on Livan.  I know throwing Livan 4th would be a slight on him, but I just trust Owings more right now.

We'll see
From the Yahoo preview of the game:

"Rockies hitters chased pitches from D'backs pitchers more than any other NL club. They swung at 24 percent of the pitches they saw from Arizona pitching that were out of the zone."

I'm not superstitious, but I'm a little stitious.

shaw!
What are you doing bringing stats into it???!  Sheesh!

by johngordonma on Oct 11, 2007 3:40 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm an idiot
just found this other statistic: Rox hit 154 against Livan this year.  Am I dumb or what?

I think we should only let Webb go for 3 innings..
...so we can save him for game 9.

See, I can be a major league manager, too.

:-D

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

/sigh
Don't give Melvin any ideas.  I'm sure he's locked in his office concocting all sorts of plans were he gets all 11 pitchers AND Ojeda on the mound in game 1.

by nihil67 on Oct 11, 2007 11:52 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Madness!
We need Cirillo out there, too!  And we should probably see if we can get Mark Grace out of retirement and put him on the mound for an inning or two.
I'm not superstitious- it's bad luck.

by kishi on Oct 11, 2007 12:56 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No. Mark Grace's career ERA=9.00
We need Cirillo, Augie, and Steve Finley out there -- they all have ERAs of 0.00
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

It's all in how you look at it
You say career ERA of 9.00, I say he played for 16 seasons and only gave up one run.  It's all about how you look at it!
I'm not superstitious, but I'm a little stitious.

Ben... when did you change your signature?
And does this represent a change in your stance on BoMel?
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Nah
He still sucks, but I figured since we're in the playoffs I should probably be more positive.

Bob Melvin hating will resume in the post-season.  Most likely to be joined with some good Eric Bynres hating.

I see.
Something along the lines of "Bob Melvin and Eric Byrnes BOTH suck"?
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

I'll put it this way
They have a few more games to prove me wrong.
