DBacks Daily 10/5/07 - Save tonight... tomorrow I'll be gone

Quote of the Day #1: "The fastball, which came in at a commendable 92 mph, ended up in the left-field seats. Lilly fired his glove to the mound in frustration; the glove was clocked at 93." - Randy Hill, FoxSports.com

Quote of the Day #2: Have to say, for 2 pitchers, Lilly and Hart sound more like a Valentine card. - hotclaws

Well Papa Grande saved (not technically) yesterday's game for us, and off we go to Chicago!! We take a 2-0 series lead with us, but we can't get cocky. The last time a team lost a 2-0 series was Oakland (and Byrnes was a part of that loss) and it was an absolutely terrible feeling. That said, I feel pretty good about this one! :) Even if the Cubs' bats do come alive in the friendly confines, I think we can match them, and our bullpen is pretty well rested if needed.

The media certainly didn't think we'd be up 2-0 in this series (honestly, who did?) so I think there's going to be a lot of news today and tomorrow. I'm sorry that I don't have time to capture everything or even read them right now, let alone write about them in a better format. 'Skins will provide more in the comments, I know. :) As should you all! This is what this thread was intended to do, be the center of information, and I'm very proud of everybody's contributions.

Two American League contests going on today, not terribly exciting yet as they're only Game #2 for each series. I think I'll worry about the AL in the CS. In the meantime, rest easy, and be patient, my young Dbacks. Do not feel overwhelmed with the increase in media attention you are surely noticing... play your game, and you will win!

From the ten things article
"To me, a leader is a servant, somebody that makes themselves available to the group," Clark says. "They offer whatever experiences that they've experienced to them in hopes of them becoming better ballplayers, better men, better fathers, better husbands, whatever the case happens to be."

What a great guy he must be.  Class all around. We are lucky to have his perspective for the club and the players.

Awesome
I'm really thrilled to hear and see how this team actually acts like a team.  It's depressingly rare in this game anymore.
I'm not superstitious- it's bad luck.

Al from BCB counts as media, right?
If so, I think this should be our QOTD #1: "And incidentally -- who turned Augie Ojeda into Chase Utley? Whoever did, would you please change him back, before Saturday?"
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Superstitions?
Anybody got any superstitions going for the series so far?  Anything you're doing to help the DBacks win?

I'm wearing my purple polo shirt, jeans, and my turquoise shoes everyday there's a game.  So far it's working.

(Yeah, obviously I'm female.  I don't want to see turquoise shoes on any guys.)

I've been drinking a different beer each game...
...and each beer has been one that I've maybe had before but never during a baseball game.

Game 1 - Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine (So Webb could stomp the opposition)
Game 2 - Pete's Rally Cap Ale (Because we were the underdog to Lilly and the Cubs)

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

I've got
the little diamondbacks hat on my 10-week old son. Maybe I'll post a picture of him. He has to be facing me though. Bad to look at the tv at that age.

Now,
if we just get a DBacks hat for skins and an Abita for Winn's kid, we'll be unstoppable.

Reading,
but not posting in the gameday thread while the game is actually being played.  While my record for games seen in person is now at 25-6 this season, the games  I participated here in the thread are... well.... not so good.

My
jersey. and i got a certain spot i sit (crouch)while watching the games on tv. been the same spot all year and has worked well including Drews April walkoff and the 3 consecutive walkoffs. unfortunately my ceiling fan is above me and when i jump up, my hands get whacked.

My 5 yr old daughter does the dance thing they do at the games (i call it the cow milker) along with the wifey.

by Adam1 on Oct 5, 2007 4:43 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I've been rotating my shirts
Game 1 got my Webb Cy Young t-shirt someone (I forget who) game me for my birthday, Game 2 got the Byrnes shirt that I got from my wife's parents, and tomorrow's game I'm wearing my sedona red D-backs shirt.

I have also spoken to three year olds before each game, so I might have to try to find one to talk to tomorrow.

I'm not superstitious- it's bad luck.

Webb Cy Young
We bought the "Extra Innings" package from Direct TV as soon as I realized that MLB was going to block out anything but the Rockies (which is our "area" team), and one of the things it offers, in addition to being able to watch most of the Diamondbacks' games, is the fun of listening to the other team's announcers.  There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to whether they take the FSN Arizona feed or the opposing team's feed.  Anywho.  When the DBacks were playing the Nationals, we got their announcers.  Oh, they were poor.  But my favorite comment by them was that Brandon Webb was a Cy Young "candidate" last year.  Not the winner, just a candidate.  Don't know why they printed those t-shorts saying he won...

Hmmm.... the BCB gameday thread yesterday
was funny enough, but I think I'd like to post some comments from the BCB recap this morning.

First, from the recap itself:

"But this Cub team has looked this bad during the 2007 season (witness, the series in Florida last week), and followed it up with solid, top-notch performances (the back-to-back shutouts last weekend in Cincinnati a perfect example)."

In case you're unaware, the Cubs got swept by the Marlins, and then came back to beat the Reds. Verrrry impressive.

I remain optimistic

And am convinced we can STILL win this series because the Cubs team that played 17-12 in September has yet to show up on the field. Fact is, the Dbcks are primed to be taken down now that they are fat, dumb, happy, and convinced they will win it all. I say let their arrogance, pride, and ego be their downfall when the series reconvenes in Wrigley and the 'real' Cubs players finally show up.

Fat? Dumb? Happy? Convinced we will win it all? Arrogance? Pride? Ego? Sawdust in my eye, log in yours. We ARE happy and proud, though.

When did we morph into the Padres offense?

When you stopped playing against Astros, Pirates, and Reds pitching. (12th, 14th, and 15th in the league)

Won't it be sweeter when the Cubs win the next 3!

3 wins

It doesn't matter if you win the Games 1,2,3 or 2,3, 4....you just have to win 3 games.

These Cubs could win 3,4,5.

We lost one game more then we all thought we would. Most of us educated fans were planning on a split.

We are only 1 game behind.

Game 1 was our April
Game 2 was our May
Game 3,4,5 will be our June - through Sept.

Cubs in 5!!! I am so excited!

Aug 15 - Ted Lilly walked by the lineup card and said to nobody in particular "I can't believe I'm batting 9th again".

Amen, brother.

Agree

I agree with everything you say and did anyone notice Soriano peeling off on the double play ball in the 9th? What was that and he was lucky to get back to 2nd after Ojeda dropped the ball. Can you imagine the D-Backs LF Eric Byrnes ever doing that???!!! Soriano is a blockhead and only gets by on his raw skills. Give me Eric Byrnes any day over Soriano.

I don't have any idea
what this last guy is trying to say. Soriano is on 1st, the ball is grounded to short. Does he think Soriano shouldn't be "peeling off"? Shouldn't he be running hard and doing a takeout slide to stop the DP? What does he mean by "back to second"? I don't remember Soriano overrunning the bag, maybe I'm wrong. Can anyone explain?

Here's the SI stuff:
Tom Verducci, in his Five Cuts for Thursday, completely ignores the Dbacks, except for mentioning offhand that Livan and Doug Davis were acquired via trade, and that Brandon Webb is the only pitcher to beat the Rockies lately. Normally I like Verducci's writing, but he's starting to get on my nerves...

In contrast, John Donovan writes about the clear supremacy of the NL West. Err... how long have we been saying this again?? (And where's Ringo Kid, incidentally? He seems to have disappeared like OJ in a white Bronco as soon as the Dbacks broke that 1-1 tie in Game 1. He's probably dedicating himself to finding the REAL Cubs.)

Gennaro Filice, in his Cubs-Dbacks blog, writes about how CY's 3 run homer was the signature moment in the series so far, and may even lead to the Dbacks finally getting noticed.

On to the ESPN stuff:

Jorge Arangure Jr. asks what happens when the numbers are wrong?

Jim Caple writes about Piniella making the opposite mistake as in Game 1.

Page 2 features a fun interactive little diagram showing exactly what's going on in Steve Bartman's brain. (Hint: You'll be surprised who he's rooting for now)

Moving right along, Fox Sports' Randy Hill writes about the general suckiness of Piniella and the Cubs so far.

Finally, last but certainly not least, Baseball Prospectus may have officially predicted a Cubs sweep (Nate Silver did, anyway) but their algorithms seem to like us, for once. They now have a table set up of odds to win each postseason series. On October 3rd, we had a 48.4% chance to win the NLDS, yesterday we had a 69.5% chance and today we have an 88.1% chance. Additionally, our chances to win the World Series have gone from 10.7% (higher only than the Yankees and Rockies) to 15.6% (second only to the Red Sox) to now highest of any team at 19.5% today, a few hundredths ahead of the Rockies who are also at slightly less than 19.5%. (Cleveland is at 19.0% and Boston is at 18.3%) Really? You mean a national baseball media organ is currently picking US to win, and the Rockies are a close 2nd? Using the numbers, no less?? It's definitely worth heading over to take a look. I like those odds.

That is all. (For real this time, I think)

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

I'd be more impressed
With Arangure Jr's article if:
a) He didn't claim, in two separate places, that Valverde saved both games,
b) If he didn't spell "skewing" as "schewing". The latter sounds too much like something Austin Powers would say. And is what happened to most male AZ fans when Young hit his homer last night. :-)

They really are
and I'm very, very proud of them. These are players mostly making major-league minimum, and ALL of them, with the exception of Helton, making under $5 million. The payroll is $54 mil (he gets 16 mil of that) ranked 25th out of 30. These young players are taking money from their own pockets and using it to financially benefit a pregnant widow with two preschool-aged children; her late husband was a coach that all of them knew well and respected -- at the AA level, and they are going out of their way to help her. What's more, this wasn't a needle-in-the-back for some good PR. The players did this of their own accord and didn't even intend to have it hit the papers. The Rockies are showing true class and character on and off the field.
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

Discovered
Part of the reason why we chased BCB so hard in the comments last night. There was an unofficial "optimistic" Gameday Thread started, where people went who were fed up with the negative tone of the other thread in Game One [and again last night!] 500+ comments in that one alone. Here's to us never ending up in that situation:

"Excuse me. Are you the Judean People's Front?"
"F___ off! We're the People's Front of Judea!"

by Jim McLennan on Oct 5, 2007 4:45 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah.
I read through both, and the "positive" one was really more like the "sane" one. I certainly agree with the thought of that never happening here. We seem to get along swimmingly, win or lose, because we have the ability to put things in perspective.

Let's face it, both the Cubs and the Diamondbacks are ahead of where they were supposed to be this year. Both of them had somewhere around a 20-game turnaround. But with the Cubs, the expectation once you reach the playoffs is World Series or bust, and I think that was unrealistic with that roster. Some people are just now discovering that the hard way.

Wow
So, I was wandering around Google, trying to find a team batting average for the post-season, and stumbled across a page where a guy was talking about a playoff prediction system that Bill James came up with.  Some strange points on it, but I scrolled down to see his predictions of the D-backs-Cubs series.  To quote:

Cubs-Diamondbacks:

  1. 1 pt to the lead team for each half-game in the standings (ARI - 10)
  2. 3 pts to the team that scored more runs (CHC - 3)
  3. 14 pts to the team with fewer doubles (ARI - 14)
  4. 12 pts to the team with more triples (ARI - 12)
  5. 10 pts to the team with more home runs (ARI - 10)
  6. 8 pts to the team with the lower team batting average (ARI - 8)
  7. 8 pts to the team that committed fewer errors (CHC - 8)
  8. 7 pts to the team that turned more double plays (ARI - 7)
  9. 7 pts to the team that walked more batters (CHC - 7)
  10. 19 pts to the team that had more shutouts (ARI - 19)
  11. 15 pts to the team whose ERA was lower (CHC - 15)
  12. 12 pts to the team that has been in postseason most recently or went further (ARI - 0)
  13. 12 pts to the team that won season series (ARI - 12)
CHC - 33, ARI - 92

I guess someone did pick us to win the series, then!  I don't get how it works (fewer doubles is good?) but, hey, whatever works.

I'm not superstitious- it's bad luck.

I really hope
our team was watching the end of that game, and someone like Melvin or Gibson turned to the young guys and said, 'If you ever do something like that, you'll be back in Tucson the next day.'  And Clark turns around and adds 'With my cleat marks on your ass.'

by peachy rex on Oct 6, 2007 3:09 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed, completely.
Totally uncalled for and unsportsmanlike. Then again, do you expect any less from Manny Ramirez?

Hitting a home run, then just admiring it for that long... for a second, I thought I was watching a Giants game...

On another note, it always amuses me the way Tony Clark runs out home runs. He always goes slow, not because he's dogging it, but because that is his full speed. ;D

Well, whaddaya know...
More BCB love for Byrnes:

"Soriano

He dogs it. There is no doubt about that and I don't want to hear these excuses like "oh, he's only 90% healthy" garbage. You're absolutely right that he "could've" caught that foul ball. One thing is for sure, Eric Byrnes would've not only caught that ball but gave everything he had to catch it.

Speaking of Byrnes, his triple off the wall was another half ass effort by Soriano. He had no idea where that ball was and jumped into the wall to make it look good. Why didn't he have any idea where the ball was? Because what's becoming a trend with Soriano, he was more concerned of where the wall was, instead of where the ball was.

How 'bout that double off the wall he played into a single? No way a player with his speed, should not be on 2nd on that play. I don't want to hear about "the Cubs were down by 4 dude" either. Another excuse for his dogging.

by lemon20pie on Friday, October 5, 2007 at 12:00 PM CT

Then again, if you're comparing the way Byrnes plays to the way Soriano plays, I think Byrnes is pretty much going to come out on top every time.
