DBacks Daily 10/5/07 - Save tonight... tomorrow I'll be gone
Quote of the Day #1: "The fastball, which came in at a commendable 92 mph, ended up in the left-field seats. Lilly fired his glove to the mound in frustration; the glove was clocked at 93." - Randy Hill, FoxSports.com
Quote of the Day #2: Have to say, for 2 pitchers, Lilly and Hart sound more like a Valentine card. - hotclaws
Well Papa Grande saved (not technically) yesterday's game for us, and off we go to Chicago!! We take a 2-0 series lead with us, but we can't get cocky. The last time a team lost a 2-0 series was Oakland (and Byrnes was a part of that loss) and it was an absolutely terrible feeling. That said, I feel pretty good about this one! :) Even if the Cubs' bats do come alive in the friendly confines, I think we can match them, and our bullpen is pretty well rested if needed.
The media certainly didn't think we'd be up 2-0 in this series (honestly, who did?) so I think there's going to be a lot of news today and tomorrow. I'm sorry that I don't have time to capture everything or even read them right now, let alone write about them in a better format. 'Skins will provide more in the comments, I know. :) As should you all! This is what this thread was intended to do, be the center of information, and I'm very proud of everybody's contributions.
Arizona Republic
- Diamondbacks take 2-0 lead in series
- Ojeda is Dbacks playoff pest
- Webb for Game 4?
- Clark a father figure
- Superfan truly loves his Dbacks
- Dan Bickley blog
- And something I missed yesterday: Hudson's daily journal
- Young, Dbacks take 2-0 series lead (also the AP recap)
- Young Snakes show they belong in post-season "Our young guys are playing like it's not their first rodeo," said Diamondbacks first baseman Tony Clark, one of the few veterans on the team. "It's impressive and gratifying to see." Thanks, TC, we really needed the media to grab more western references...
- Dbacks 2B Ojeda contributing in starting role
Two American League contests going on today, not terribly exciting yet as they're only Game #2 for each series. I think I'll worry about the AL in the CS. In the meantime, rest easy, and be patient, my young Dbacks. Do not feel overwhelmed with the increase in media attention you are surely noticing... play your game, and you will win!

Superstitions?
I'm wearing my purple polo shirt, jeans, and my turquoise shoes everyday there's a game. So far it's working.
(Yeah, obviously I'm female. I don't want to see turquoise shoes on any guys.)

I've been drinking a different beer each game...
Game 1 - Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine (So Webb could stomp the opposition)
Game 2 - Pete's Rally Cap Ale (Because we were the underdog to Lilly and the Cubs)

I have also spoken to three year olds before each game, so I might have to try to find one to talk to tomorrow.

Hmmm.... the BCB gameday thread yesterday
First, from the recap itself:
"But this Cub team has looked this bad during the 2007 season (witness, the series in Florida last week), and followed it up with solid, top-notch performances (the back-to-back shutouts last weekend in Cincinnati a perfect example)."
In case you're unaware, the Cubs got swept by the Marlins, and then came back to beat the Reds. Verrrry impressive.
I remain optimistic
And am convinced we can STILL win this series because the Cubs team that played 17-12 in September has yet to show up on the field. Fact is, the Dbcks are primed to be taken down now that they are fat, dumb, happy, and convinced they will win it all. I say let their arrogance, pride, and ego be their downfall when the series reconvenes in Wrigley and the 'real' Cubs players finally show up.

Fat? Dumb? Happy? Convinced we will win it all? Arrogance? Pride? Ego? Sawdust in my eye, log in yours. We ARE happy and proud, though.
Our sluggers need to step up.
When did we morph into the Padres offense?

When you stopped playing against Astros, Pirates, and Reds pitching. (12th, 14th, and 15th in the league)
Won't it be sweeter when the Cubs win the next 3!
3 wins
It doesn't matter if you win the Games 1,2,3 or 2,3, 4....you just have to win 3 games.
These Cubs could win 3,4,5.
We lost one game more then we all thought we would. Most of us educated fans were planning on a split.
We are only 1 game behind.
Game 1 was our April
Game 2 was our May
Game 3,4,5 will be our June - through Sept.
Cubs in 5!!! I am so excited!
Aug 15 - Ted Lilly walked by the lineup card and said to nobody in particular "I can't believe I'm batting 9th again".

As I've been saying, when the Cubs sweep finally comes, I'll be ever so upset. :( Not to mention the fact that I don't think the Cubs fans saw any of OUR June through Sept.

Amen, brother.
Agree
I agree with everything you say and did anyone notice Soriano peeling off on the double play ball in the 9th? What was that and he was lucky to get back to 2nd after Ojeda dropped the ball. Can you imagine the D-Backs LF Eric Byrnes ever doing that???!!! Soriano is a blockhead and only gets by on his raw skills. Give me Eric Byrnes any day over Soriano.

Here's the SI stuff:
In contrast, John Donovan writes about the clear supremacy of the NL West. Err... how long have we been saying this again?? (And where's Ringo Kid, incidentally? He seems to have disappeared like OJ in a white Bronco as soon as the Dbacks broke that 1-1 tie in Game 1. He's probably dedicating himself to finding the REAL Cubs.)
Gennaro Filice, in his Cubs-Dbacks blog, writes about how CY's 3 run homer was the signature moment in the series so far, and may even lead to the Dbacks finally getting noticed.
On to the ESPN stuff:
Jorge Arangure Jr. asks what happens when the numbers are wrong?
Jim Caple writes about Piniella making the opposite mistake as in Game 1.
Page 2 features a fun interactive little diagram showing exactly what's going on in Steve Bartman's brain. (Hint: You'll be surprised who he's rooting for now)
Moving right along, Fox Sports' Randy Hill writes about the general suckiness of Piniella and the Cubs so far.
Finally, last but certainly not least, Baseball Prospectus may have officially predicted a Cubs sweep (Nate Silver did, anyway) but their algorithms seem to like us, for once. They now have a table set up of odds to win each postseason series. On October 3rd, we had a 48.4% chance to win the NLDS, yesterday we had a 69.5% chance and today we have an 88.1% chance. Additionally, our chances to win the World Series have gone from 10.7% (higher only than the Yankees and Rockies) to 15.6% (second only to the Red Sox) to now highest of any team at 19.5% today, a few hundredths ahead of the Rockies who are also at slightly less than 19.5%. (Cleveland is at 19.0% and Boston is at 18.3%) Really? You mean a national baseball media organ is currently picking US to win, and the Rockies are a close 2nd? Using the numbers, no less?? It's definitely worth heading over to take a look. I like those odds.
That is all. (For real this time, I think)

I'd be more impressed
a) He didn't claim, in two separate places, that Valverde saved both games,
b) If he didn't spell "skewing" as "schewing". The latter sounds too much like something Austin Powers would say. And is what happened to most male AZ fans when Young hit his homer last night. :-)

Yeah.
Let's face it, both the Cubs and the Diamondbacks are ahead of where they were supposed to be this year. Both of them had somewhere around a 20-game turnaround. But with the Cubs, the expectation once you reach the playoffs is World Series or bust, and I think that was unrealistic with that roster. Some people are just now discovering that the hard way.

Wow
Cubs-Diamondbacks:
- 1 pt to the lead team for each half-game in the standings (ARI - 10)
- 3 pts to the team that scored more runs (CHC - 3)
- 14 pts to the team with fewer doubles (ARI - 14)
- 12 pts to the team with more triples (ARI - 12)
- 10 pts to the team with more home runs (ARI - 10)
- 8 pts to the team with the lower team batting average (ARI - 8)
- 8 pts to the team that committed fewer errors (CHC - 8)
- 7 pts to the team that turned more double plays (ARI - 7)
- 7 pts to the team that walked more batters (CHC - 7)
- 19 pts to the team that had more shutouts (ARI - 19)
- 15 pts to the team whose ERA was lower (CHC - 15)
- 12 pts to the team that has been in postseason most recently or went further (ARI - 0)
- 12 pts to the team that won season series (ARI - 12)
I guess someone did pick us to win the series, then! I don't get how it works (fewer doubles is good?) but, hey, whatever works.

Agreed, completely.
Hitting a home run, then just admiring it for that long... for a second, I thought I was watching a Giants game...
On another note, it always amuses me the way Tony Clark runs out home runs. He always goes slow, not because he's dogging it, but because that is his full speed. ;D

Well, whaddaya know...
"Soriano
He dogs it. There is no doubt about that and I don't want to hear these excuses like "oh, he's only 90% healthy" garbage. You're absolutely right that he "could've" caught that foul ball. One thing is for sure, Eric Byrnes would've not only caught that ball but gave everything he had to catch it.
Speaking of Byrnes, his triple off the wall was another half ass effort by Soriano. He had no idea where that ball was and jumped into the wall to make it look good. Why didn't he have any idea where the ball was? Because what's becoming a trend with Soriano, he was more concerned of where the wall was, instead of where the ball was.
How 'bout that double off the wall he played into a single? No way a player with his speed, should not be on 2nd on that play. I don't want to hear about "the Cubs were down by 4 dude" either. Another excuse for his dogging.
by lemon20pie on Friday, October 5, 2007 at 12:00 PM CT
[ Reply to This ]"
Then again, if you're comparing the way Byrnes plays to the way Soriano plays, I think Byrnes is pretty much going to come out on top every time.
