DBacks Daily 10/4/07 - Everything's gonna be just fine...

... 'Cause we win tonight. [Well we won last night, at least.]

Hey Jim? Can I steal your QotD and use it here too? I've got two really good ones for today:

Quote of the Day #1: "Reynolds breathed it and then delivered." - Nick Piecoro I sure hope that's nothing like Experience It. (And, Nick? You have to breathe in before you deliver, but Mark won't ever have that problem.) (I know it's related to the sentence above it but that wasn't there last night and it was much funnier.)

Quote of the Day #2: What movie? I've been trying to figure out who's country this is. - Devin There were a lot of funny comments about TBS last night, but Devin's is the one I'm going to keep laughing at for quite some time. Thanks, Devin. Very clever. :)

Well we took Game 1, and I think we all feel better about this series. I know I do! What a game yesterday! I think it was everything we expected, a low-scoring battle of aces which the D-backs pulled out of the hat. You know, while everyone's going to be criticizing Pinella's move last night, it wasn't a bad move in theory. His bullpen has been terrific all year, and he's bringing back his pitcher in Game 4 if it's played. Zambrano kept them in Game 1, and he knows the likelihood for a sweep against these Diamondbacks is low, so he wants Zambrano to be good in Game 4 too. So he hands the ball to his reliever who has a a 1.43 ERA with 96 Ks in 69.1 innings. It backfired, and that sucks, and for a short series it's even worse, but in theory it's not bad.

Dang, there's a lot of news today. I don't know what's going to be the best way to cover all this... I may have to just categorize them by source.

Arizona Republic

Dan Bickley and Nick Piecoro both talk about said Zambrano move. Zambrano wanted to pitch more, he says, but the Cubs blamed their lack of offense. Notes on the Cubs discuss the move at catcher, benching Kendall and starting Soto.

Drew and Reynolds come through in Game 1, and if they were anonymous before, they are no longer. (But people on the east coast went to sleep, as we all know, so they still are.) Davis worked hard to get this team to the post-season, and he's ready for his chance to show why. Stephen Drew's hot streak continues; he says he's been comfortable a while, and hopefully these hits will continue to "fall in" to the bleachers!

Reynolds makes debut - better little article on Mark Reynolds. Also one on Stephen Drew's Game 1 performance and season-long learning experience

Cubs, Dbacks set hits home for Grace Discusses (sort of) Grace's ties to both teams. Quote:
"My mom and dad taught me a long time ago not to bite the hand that feeds you, and right now I'm being fed very well by this team," said Grace. Really Gracie? That's the best thing you can think of to say in that situation?

Davis rides momentum into Game 2 Quote:
That Davis on Aug. 25 defeated the Cubs -- a team that's just 19-24 this season against left-handers -- certainly didn't hurt Davis case, either. But why has he been successful against the Cubs? "It just seems that every time I face them, it feels like I can execute a plan that I've been working on for the week before that," Davis said. "It's something that I study and figure out what hitters' weaknesses are, and I try to execute my pitches and let my fielders work behind me."

Colangelo returns to throw out first pitch I didn't know this, this was a nice touch, especially to RJ (who apparently sat in on the radio broadcast) Quote: "My thought to do this was to kind of connect the great success of the past to the present," Kendrick said.

  • Chess Match: Pitcher Selection Conor Jackson and the bullpen help Bob Melvin look good again in pulling Webb after 7; Pinella, not so much..
  • Notes: Melvin goes with 11 pitchers Melvin felt more comfortable with 11 pitchers, and I can't blame him! He was so excited to tell Hammock he made the post-season roster, he told him early. Jay Bell & Matt Williams are to throw out first pitches in Game 2.
  • Short Hops Brief look at the key players of Arizona's win.
  • Webb gem boosts Dbacks past Cubs I guess this would be the MLB.com recap. It talks about Webb, his nerves (if any), his pitch selection, troubles in the 6th, and the offensive support.
More stuff can be found at MLB.com on the Cubs-Dbacks Division Series page: interviews, highlights, articles.

Others
Experts: Who's going to win? Nobody picked us to even make the World Series, and 4 of 20 picked us to beat the Cubs. Well, let's see what they say 2 or 3 games from now!

Yahoo's being stupid again so I can't get the game preview. But, as we all know, it's Davis vs Lilly. Tonight at 7, be there or be here. (And remember, TBS is your exclusive home for the Division Series. ::gag::)

DBacks Daily's Daily Addendum
Here's the AP preview.

From SI:

John Donovan marvels at the way Webb was able to dominate the Cubs without having his best stuff. Donovan also presents his Thursday Preview.

Tom Verducci has his Five Cuts for Wednesday, focusing on Webb's ability to beat right handed hitters.

Jon Heyman ranks the postseason teams  in order of chances to win the World Series. Wouldn't ya know it, he has the Yankees and Red Sox at #1 and #2. Wouldn't ya know it, he also has the D'backs at #3, and for all the reasons WE keep mentioning. :-D (For what it's worth, he predicts the Yankees over the Dbacks in the WS, avenging 2001)

I was discussing this at Purple Row last night, but Heyman and Dodgers/NL West blogger Jon Weisman both took the Rockies and Dbacks  to win their respective NLDS series'.

We also have a guest blogger in our midst: Mike from My Hero The Goat has been posting on the 'Pit all morning. He also answered my question from the Dbacks Daily a few days' back as to whether or not the guys at My Hero The Goat are Cubs fans. In his own words, "That is NOT the case. We hate the Cubs - their fans actually." That's very good news; I suddenly like those guys even more.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Oh... and in solidarity with our NL West friends
here's an idiotic article by a Philadelphia writer who claims that, since the Phillies lost yesterday and Jimmy Rollins had a shitty day, Jimmy Rollins should be MVP. Hmmm... the article also notes that Chase Utley and Ryan Howard were ohfer; Rollins, Utley and Howard went 0-11 with 8Ks. And yet, somehow that's supposed to prove that Jimmy Rollins is MVP?
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Phils-Rox
Welcome to the big show, Kyle Kendrick.  Only two outs in the first inning and he's already given up bombs to Tulowitzki and Holliday.  Philadelphians everywhere are flinging themselves off bridges and highrises.

by johngordonma on Oct 4, 2007 3:20 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Unfortunately
Frankie had to go give up a homer to That Other Candidate, so all the analysts predicting a high-scoring game may be right. Let's hope they're not and the final is 2-1 (or 3-1, or 5-1 or 8-1 or you get my drift...) That would boil 'em.
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

Who is this Morales kid?
And why doesn't he like to throw strikes?

by nihil67 on Oct 4, 2007 3:51 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He's usually better about it
but he's a 21-year-old lefty with electric stuff who got called up in August, once Hirsh, Lopez, and Cook all went down like those marbles in Hungry Hungry Hippos. He went 3-2/2.43 in limited duty as a starter and performed quite well for us down the stretch, but anybody's going to have a little trouble in that pinball park against the Phils mashers... come on Frankie...
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

Cook got hurt?
Damn... I guess I haven't been paying attention :)

I like that guy.

by nihil67 on Oct 4, 2007 4:10 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah
Oblique injury. He may be available for the NLCS if we make it there (knock on wood) but to be honest, he hasn't pitched in so long (and wasn't entirely overpowering when he did) that I'd rather take my chances with Morales/Jimenez (despite Frankie's scuffles today). Then again, if he can come back and deprive Mark Redman of a roster spot, I'm all for it.
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

God dammit
Rollins 2RBI triple, 3-2 Them. Settle down, Morales.
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

by Silverblood on Oct 4, 2007 3:58 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Interesting.
Morales pinch hit for, and now Kendrick pulled. Both starters gone in the fourth.

by Azreous on Oct 4, 2007 4:32 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

not that surprising
these teams are going to patch their way through the rest of these games I'd imagine.  Their only saving grace right now is that they've had two day games and had to deal with some major shadows.  Once they play at night, I'd imagine the football scores will commence.

by johngordonma on Oct 4, 2007 4:35 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Got one now.
Colorado adds a field goal (okay, actually a Kaz Matsui grand slam). 6-3.

by Azreous on Oct 4, 2007 4:36 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I was gonna say
You'll never guess who just hit a grand slam. Tulowitzki? No. Holliday? No. Helton? No. Hawpe, right? No. Oh, Atkins. Nope. Kaz Matsui.
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

Fogg
Fogg out of the bullpen, eh?  Interesting move.  And by interesting I mean poor.

by nihil67 on Oct 4, 2007 4:44 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Matsui
When Matsui got kicked to the curb by the Mets I thought that he might land somewhere and do alright for himself, but this season has been very, very positive for him.  Hitting over 280 with 30+ SBs.  Very nice all around output from him.  Hey, I know a team that could have used a decent 2B.  Oh yeah, the METS!

by johngordonma on Oct 4, 2007 4:47 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I thought so as well
and then he got a 1-2-3 inning. Wow.

I hope there's not a Game 4 at this rate, because then Redman's going to be starting it. Ouch.

Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

by Silverblood on Oct 4, 2007 4:49 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Geez
who are these teams going to start in games 3-4?  Jorge Julio and Jose Mesa???

by johngordonma on Oct 4, 2007 4:51 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That would be entertaining
and by entertaining I mean suicide-inducing. Battle of the Craptastic ex-Rox Relievers. Fortunately Julio stayed home and is watching this one on the couch.
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

Mesa just came in
and promptly walked the first two he faced.  Why is this guy still in the league?

by johngordonma on Oct 4, 2007 5:16 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wow
I'm getting just a little leery of a possible matchup with the Rox in the NLCS.  Do they ever stop hitting?

by peachy rex on Oct 4, 2007 5:19 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nope.
We got here with a little help from our pitching (actually, a lot, we had the best ERA in the NL after the break) but we like all that heavy lumber.
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

by Silverblood on Oct 4, 2007 5:21 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Jose can you see?
your team's playoff chances are slipping away with every pitch you toss.

Game.
Over.

by johngordonma on Oct 4, 2007 5:20 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh man
You have no idea how fun it is to see Jose Mesa massively blow AGAINST us, instead of while WITH us.
Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

Clay Condrey
snigger, snigger.  Who, pray tell is CLAY CONDREY!  And I live 45 minutes from Philly.  The Phillies are so screwed it's not even funny.
Wanna hear a joke?  Jamie "BP" Moyer is going tomorrow.  Get out your brooms, Colorado... it's cleaning time.

Isn't the next game on Saturday?
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 4, 2007 5:26 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

sorry, that's what I meant...
...it's still Moyer, as far as I know.

BUT
he is an experienced BP pitcher!

From the mighty bat of Kazuo Matsui...
...the Broncos score 2 safeties, simultaneously. ;-)

Wait, I'm starting to understand.
Jimmy Rollins is the MVP because the Phillies pitching is so bad. Thaaaaaaat's the reason.

Another anti-Cubs site
CubsSuckClub.com. Got an email from their head guy, Ryan: that we are having a "live blogging" event tonight during the game, so feel free to pop over and say hello. S'funny: the Cubs probably have more anti sites about them, than any other team, perhaps save the Yankees...

by Jim McLennan on Oct 4, 2007 5:46 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hilarious
I guess I've never really seen a good reason to hate the Cubs.  I may not like some of their fans, but they aren't even close to the Yankees on my hate list.

by nihil67 on Oct 4, 2007 5:47 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I hate the Yankees
so much it isn't to be believed, but the Cubs are like the Yankees in attitude, assholery from fanbase, etc., except they don't even have a good reason to be. They suck. It's hard to tell which of the two I hate more.

Nah. It's the Yankees.

Friendly visiting Rockies fan.

I'll bet Barry has even more.
In typical Barry fashion, it's all about HIM, rather than his team.

Awesome!
I'm honored to be Quote of the Day #2!  It was a good thing we rested up our wit, snark, and typing fingers in those last two games of the season.  I think it benefited all and the Snakepit Nation came out swinging last night.
I'm not superstitious- it's bad luck.

I swear to god, we could sweep this series and get no credit whatsoever.

by Azreous on Oct 4, 2007 6:02 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm starting to really
dislike the Cubs.  Although it is entertaining, in a perverse kind of way, to see all the local news people who were SoxFans4Eva a couple of years ago now pledging their eternal loyalty to the Cubs.  People who live in one team markets don't know how lucky they are.

by peachy rex on Oct 4, 2007 6:54 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sox fans are the true Chicago baseball fans.
Nothing lovable about 'em at all; they didn't HAVE a Billy Goat curse. They had a curse about a bunch of cheating baseball players. They've always been the Cubs' ugly stepsisters. And now they've got a championship, and the Cubs don't. :-D

If you can stick to being a White Sox fan, then you're a true baseball fan.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

this is fabulous!
"Webb's ball had a lot of movement on it."  LOL!  Yup.  His name is Brandon Webb.  He's won a Cy Young.  He's got great movement.  Read a friggin' scouting report!

by johngordonma on Oct 4, 2007 7:56 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm sure THAT must have been the reason
we won the NL West as well. Webb was doctoring the balls for all of our pitchers, every game. See, if Carlos Zambrano had just doctored all the balls for the Cubs, maybe they would have won more than 85 games in the NL Central.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 4, 2007 10:04 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That explains so much
I was wondering why Webb kept running out to the mound between each pitch during the whole season...
I'm not superstitious- it's bad luck.

by kishi on Oct 4, 2007 10:25 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Really?
See, I didn't really think anything of that. I always thought it weird how he'd go out there with a 5 gallon bucket of vaseline, though. Kept wondering if it might get in the way of fielding a bunt.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.
