DBacks Daily (Weekly?) 10/28/07 - Rumor Roundup

Hi everybody. Hope you're all enjoying (or not) the World Series. Well there's not enough news yet to do a "Daily" but there have been some things posted this week that are of note.

First, as Ben pointed out, the Diamondbacks lost another scout to the Nationals. Sounds like the Nats will have a good team in a few years time.

The MLB.com Mailbag for last week discussed the options of pitching. We expect to lose Livo to free agency and who knows about RJ's back, so we need at least one starter. The Chicago Tribune reports that Livan would like to join his brother in New York. He's looking for a 3 or 4 year deal and I'm sure Arizona's management is not going to concede to that. Nippert is a possibility, but it looks more likely to happen via trades. Rumors have Jackson, Tracy and Gonzalez on the trade block, with Tracy less so than Jackson because of his knee.

MLB.com notes discuss Melvin's future - he met with Josh Byrnes at several Fall League games, almost assuredly about an extension, but had no comment on his situation. Byrnes said he intends to bring all the coaching staff back, and he's one step closer to that with exercising Bryan Price's option for 2008.

Tonight is World Series Game 4, and it could very well be the last MLB game of the year. Personally, I would be very sad if Boston won, not only for Colorado, but because the streak of 7 different winners in 7 years would be broken. But the irony here is rich - Arizona swept Chicago and then was swept by Colorado, will Colorado sweep Arizona and be swept by Boston? Tune in tonight to find out...

Rumors
The Orioles may be looking to deal Tejada and Bedard?

Tejada has $26 mil left on his contract through '09 plus 2 installments of $2 mil in signing bonus money due in 2010 and 2011.

Bedard just finished his 4th MLB season, which I'm pretty sure means he can file for free agency after the 2009 season.  He avoided arbitration this year with a $3.4 million contract.  I suspect he'll be looking for something in the $5-$7 mil range this year.

I don't think I'd be interested in Tejada (too expensive, nowhere for him to play), but I'd love to take Bedard off of the Orioles hands and wrap him up in a nice little 5 year, $45 mil contract.

I'm sure somebody will be able to outtrade us,
but I say, damn! Go after Bedard, ASAP! Package 2 of the following: Quentin, CoJack, CarGo, Tracy, maybe Romero, plus maybe a pitcher like Nippert, EdGon, or Medders. (PLEASE trade Medders!)
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Indeed
"Package 2 of the following: Quentin, CoJack, CarGo, Tracy, maybe Romero"

The Orioles are reportedly looking for major league ready position players.  Not sure if they'll take a pitcher, but I wouldn't mind seeing any of those 3 in a deal for a guy like Bedard.

I'd also prefer to not trade CarGo, but Bedard would be a worthy take for him.

I'd rather not trade CarGo, either...
But for Bedard?? Hell yeah. The guy's 28, went 13-5 for a horrible team, had a 3.16 ERA (4th in the AL, better than Sabathia, Beckett, and Santana) and had 221 Ks. (3rd in the AL)

Imagine what the guy could do in a soft-hitting division like the NL West?? All those numbers came in the AL East...

If we were to get Bedard, I think it immediately turns us into the favorites in the division to repeat.

Wait-- I've got it. Trade Eric Byrnes for Erik Bedard straight up. He had a .545 OPS in Baltimore when he was released, and after he revived his career, the Orioles have regretted it ever since. Peter Angelos is so stupid that he might actually go for it.

In other news, the Yankees offered Joe Girardi their managership. Normally I hate it whenever anything good happens to the Yankees, but if it means the Dodgers don't get him, I'm all for it.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Berdard?
I will trade CarGo and one of the pitchers named above in a heartbeat for the guy. Even better still, take Byrnes instead! Imagine the Lefty Righty Combo of Webb and Bedard... I am drooling already...

But then Angelos will know everyone wants Berdard and will try to up the asking price for him. He may be dumb, but I doubt he is that dumb. Hopefully he proves me wrong :)

From what I know about Girardi, he sounds like one hell of a old school manager. I think the Yankees made the right choice, though I wonder how he will handle the personalities in that clubhouse.

Postseason stats
Here they are. Stephen Drew led the entire NL in BA, (Is that a new Drew family tradition? Sucking during the regular season then tearing it up in October?) Drew and Reynolds and CY each had more HRs than any NL player besides Holliday, and Byrnes and CY tied for 4th with 5 RBIs. Those numbers include the Rox in the World Series as well.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.
