Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Gameday Thread, #160: 9/29 vs. Padres

Clay Hensley, RHP (11-11, 3.73)
Livan Hernandez, RHP (12-13, 4.95)

Let's hope Part II of the Gonzo Farewell Weekend goes a bit better than the first act, shall we say. Not immediately optimistic, seeing that Hensley has been lights-out for the past couple of months. However, Hernandez v2.0 has been pretty solid of late, and so there might be some hope for us. First pitch is looming, and not much time to write more, as I had a fun, but kinda weird afternoon. It was the 6th birthday of Brain Damage Films, so we celebrated that down at The Sets, with beers, food and an appropriately horror-themed cake.

Bizarrely, when we were at the supermarket, picking up the cake, some guy, entranced by it, came up and introduced himself as the nephew of Tod Browning, director of 1932 horror classic Freaks. Strange world... But contrary to suitsme's fears, I should be around for most of that one, so comments will follow. Please feel free to join me. Though I might skip the margaritas tonight. :-)

PS. Can William K drop me an email (trashcityman@aol.com)? Tried to find an address on BBTNG, but had no luck. Nothing crucial.

There are none (uuuurrrrp) left...
But judging by early developments you'll be looking for something to dull the memory.

A lethal mix...
I'm already a couple of Killian's Irish Reds and a couple of Newcastle Browns down the pipes, so I think switching to liquor would be a bad, bad move tonight... :-)

Camera angles...
Livan in front of McDonalds' "I'm Lovin' It".
Lookin' like he has for years.

Tonight's line-up
  1. C. Counsell 2b .260
  2. E. Byrnes cf .269
  3. L. Gonzalez lf .272
  4. C. Tracy 3b .276
  5. C. Jackson 1b .293
  6. S. Drew ss .317
  7. C. Quentin rf .248
  8. C. Snyder c .281
  9. L. Hernandez p .212
Jackson clanks on an admittedly-poor pickoff throw from Hernandez 2.0, when they had Roberts picked off. Worse still, it took him two attempts to pick the ball up, and Roberts could have crawled to second on his belly, with a daffodil in his...well, y'know, before the ball got there.. Sigh. Still, no harm done.

No love for Gonzo...
That looked like ball four to me, but the home plate umpire's idea of honouring our left-fielder involves ringing him up. Down go the D'backs, 1-2-3.

That's better
After eight of the first nine hitters get retired, Counsell walks, and Byrnes deposits one on the left-field bleachers. Interesting story from Grace about Craig Counsell giving Randy Johnson a dressing-down in the locker-room. Wonder what that was about? Would like to have been a fly on the wall for that one.

Another fourth out for the Padres
Tracy can't turn the double-play: would have been better to step on third and throw to first. But Livan does the needful, and keeps the lead.

This one's galloping along
75 minutes in, and we've already reached the bottom of the fifth. Shame it wasn't like this last night...and not just in speed. Livan is pitching very well again...

Livan bends...
But doesn't break. One run in during the seventh, and the tying run at second, but gets Roberts to chase ball four and ends the inning. 2-1 now, as we stand and stretch for a bit.

Rookies do it again
Jackson doubles; Drew tries to bunt him to third, but the force is made there. However, Quentin sends another ball to the fence, and Drew motors all the way round from first to restore the lead. Good stuff.

Hernandez out
Slaten in for the eighth. Six outs to hold on for the win. Dodgers losing in SF, Philadelphia have won. St Louis won, Houston lost, so they have some breathing room, and Carpenter's Sunday start seems less likely.

AZ holds on
Valverde closes out the game without trouble, though still seems too much in love with his fastball.

I just saw Matt Leinart's advert for The Room Store. Wow. His delivery was so wooden, I mistook him for one of the pieces of furniture. Maybe his "friend" Paris was operating him out of shot...
