Gameday Thread, #62: 6/10 vs Mets
|

Was chatting to npineda yesterday, and he was - with a certain amount of schadenfreude - pointing out how the D'backs went 4-0 when he was covering, but are 0-5 since I came back. I was almost tempted to let him weave his magic today...until I remembered we've got a Webb start on our hands. This will be the acid test of the curse, which began with a loss in a Webb start, for the opener of the homestand on Monday - y'know, back in the golden age when Grimsley was "veteran presence" rather than "despised stoolie".
So if we lose this one, I'm letting npineda post the Gameday Thread on Sunday, see if that breaks the vicious cycle into which we've sunk. And should that fail, we'll move onto the virgin sacrifices...if I can find one of them in Scottsdale. ;-) But I'm optimistic that won't be necessary, as we showed signs of life in yesterday's game, which suggest we may finally be moving past the Grimsley era. There's no question about it, this has shaken the club badly over the past few days. As Ken Kendrick said:
However, despite this, the fact remain: no-one in the NL West has a better record than the Diamondbacks. We can still draw a line underneath this sorry affair, and get back to playing the kind of baseball which we're capable of playing, without too much damage. A good performance from our starters would be very helpful in this regard, and no-one in the majors is better suited to do that than Webb. We shouldn't underestimate Soler, even if we slapped him around for seven runs in five frames last time out - that Mets offense is a fearsome thing, once it gets rolling. But I reckon today marks the start of the rest of the 2006 season, and a win will hopefully let us move on forward.

Let's get a win. Momentum!!!
After the Mets, the Giants come in for a 3-game series on Tuesday. We can sweep the Giants.
Then we go on the road to face the Rangers of the AL West and the Devil Rays in St. Pete. We can sweep the Rays; the Rangers and probably too nstrong of a team to sweep (Showalter's boys!) but 2 of 3 would be fresh!!!!
In fact, we finish June against the fairly competitive AL West: the Angels, Mariners and A's. If we have an excellent showing there, it leads to some important July road series against the Dodgers and the Rockies (hopefully they'll still be mediocre!) leading to the All-Star game. The momentum could wash GrimsleyGate right outta our hair - or remind everyone of 2004. It's the D-Backs choice.

I am going to the game
I will buy a scorecard when I head back down and take my Walkman so I can score the game. When I come back I will post some thoughts on the game and the Chase Field atmosphere. The main patio area was fairly crowded at 4:30 - I think there might be a large crowd on hand tonight, and the Gonzo doll may be a reason.
There will be many Met fans in attendance. About 1 in 10 people I saw had Mets gear on.

The D-Backs need a good team song
That is a catchy little tune, you must admit. There are WAV's of it available on various Met-centric websites.
How come the D-Backs don't have a fight song? One that KTAR and FSN can play before each game? (And no, the "10% power/50% pain" rap song played on the Jumbotron does not cut it!)

Ahh ...
10% Luck
20% Skill
15% Concentrated power of will
5% Pleasure
50% Pain
And
100% reason to remember the name
Which adds up to 200% if i'm not mistaken ... Sigh, oh well.
I think there's something to be said for the old East Coast teams having those distintivly, umm ... Old, sounding songs, as was exploreded in the Red Sox centered movie 'Fever Pitch'. But wouldn't a song like that sound extremely dated in a city like Phoenix? Even the sun's theme, the techno John Tesh thing with the computer animated map going through the state of AZ ... that feels dated, and I couldn't imagine what a old Rag Time tune would sound like for the D-Backs.

Should I suggest
- The Drugs Don't Work - The Verve
- Waiting for The Man - Velvet Underground
- The Needle and the Damage Done - Neil Young
- Drug Drug Druggy - Manic Street Preachers
And didn't The Rolling Stones have song called Jason's Little Helper? Oh, my mistake... :-)

The Sun City/Sun Lakes crowd...
But you're right, that ain't gonna fly here! This club is after the 25-40 demo, as they have a lot of disposable bucks to spend and was raised on rock and hip-hop.

Here on MSN
last 8 games at Chase:
Mets 64 Diamondbacks 18
They swept us last year too.
The AFLAC quiz is "what is the record for number of road wins against the same team?" Obviously higher than 8, which is what they have on us now.
Let's not let them insult us like this.
This game is early and Soler is slipping from his strength. Webb is getting strikeouts with his sinker not as low as it should be.
All signs point to a comeback.

I hand tomorrow over to Mr.Pineda
Pedro -v- Ortiz???
I was hoping maybe I would check in from work and see another miraculous comeback tonight - - six losses in a row, and Ortiz pitches tomorrow?!
Damn.
Thirstbuster!!!!!!
1. If it wasn't for the first inning I might still be there by now. 3 unearned runs in the first - then Webby settles down and notches (I believe) 9 K's. Lyon strikes out Soler in the 9th to get a team strikeout of 10 which qualifies everyone for a ticket redeemable for the 44oz. drink at Circle K.
1a. Soler a bad pitcher? He had two K's and made everyone hit line drive balls that the Mets infielders and outfielders routinely caught. The Mets infield is as good as I've seen and is every bit the equal of ours.
- Announced attendance 35,150. Fairly good crowd, very tough to get Diamondback crowds cheering. Mets fans tried here and there to cheer "Let's Go Mets" but were always booed by the home fans.
- No offense but pretty good defense. Great catch by Byrnsie in the 8th - but a run still scored. I heard the post game comments on KTAR, I think it was Green, basically saying the team is trying hard to get the offense started and it ain't workin'.
- I had the radio on the whole game and drowned out the Annoying Blonde. Woo Hoo!
- First time I saw the Taco Bell Race (the burrito won, Taco's towel almost came off and the big cup of pepsi was slow as molasses). I'll take the Milwaukee sausages any day of the week.
