Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Gameday Thread, #50: 5/29 vs. Mets

Claudio Vargas, RHP (5-2, 4.93)
Steve Trachsel, RHP (2-4, 4.99)

Let's see if our rotation can keep going on this phenomenal streak of quality starts, now up to eight. Indeed "quality" seems an understatement in the case of the Reds series, where they averaged seven innings each, with an ERA of 0.43. I think we'd settle for that ERA, or even half a dozen times that, in this series against the Mets.

Vargas did well enough for the win last time out, pitching six frames and allowing only two first-inning runs; Trachsel got lit up by the Phillies, with a toasty six earned runs in five innings. His starts in May have seen steadily-increasing control issues, and steadily-decreasing strikeouts, so patience may prove particularly beneficial.

The Mets are only seventh in runs scored in the league, and have been doing it mostly with pitching - their 3.91 ERA trails only St. Louis and LA. However, outside of Pedro and Tom Glavine, their rotation has been a work in progress: El Duque, who won yesterday against Florida, is the tenth different starter they've used this year already. We won't see him or Glavine this series though.

Infielder injury alert! But, before you rush out to buy your Drew shirts, I should mention Counsell feels fine - it's Damion Easley, whose back has been playing him up. The Diamondbacks are hoping he'll be able to avoid any DL time, but if he does, we'll likely see more of Andy Green, with Alberto Callaspo called up to fill the pine-riding spot.

Today's lineup
  1. C. Counsell ss .306
  2. E. Byrnes cf .322
  3. C. Tracy 3b .292
  4. L. Gonzalez lf .288
  5. C. Jackson 1b .297
  6. S. Green rf .335
  7. J. Estrada c .313
  8. O. Hudson 2b .238
  9. C. Vargas p .077
Looks like we should have the edge in hitting today. We have four players over .300 and another two above .290 - the Mets have only two above .280. Though their pitcher is batting 111 points better than Cruz, so that's an edge for them. :-)

This might jinx him, but Garrett Mock has a no-hitter through 6 innings down in Tennessee.  He has walked 4 though so not sure if he can pitch all 9.  The Smokies are leading 3-0 against the Carolina Mudcats

Don't think so
It was more like leaving too many balls in the strike-zone.  He had 0-2 counts on the first 2 hitters in the 9th and gave up hits to both.  He didn't throw a ball until he intentionally walked Beltran.

by William K on May 30, 2006 4:58 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Adjustments
Valverde doesn't appear to be injured (bruised ego aside), so maybe he needs to try throwing an occasional off-speed pitch! His fastball still moves pretty well, but opposing hitters are adjusting to it; Valverde needs to keep them off-guard.

by IndyDBack on May 30, 2006 11:09 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My roommate and I
were just begging Valverde to throw a slider, any slider, at some point during last night's debacle.  It never happened.

It seems like he's completely lost faith in his slider and is relying more on the splitfinger lately -- and the splitter has been getting hit hard.

In my nightmares, I see Brian Bruney...make it stop...

It was bad enough hearing it from the Cincy faithful at GAB on Sunday (all in good fun - the Reds fans were pretty cool), but watching another Valverde meltdown makes me VERY ANGRY!! We should be 4-0 on this road trip right now - - BoMel already said this morning that Valverde will not pitch tonight, so maybe the auditions will begin for Closer 2006 v.2!
