The rain may have caused an early end to all Cactus League action, but the World Baseball Classic rolled on, with a pair of games at Chase Field. And the Diamondbacks rookies got to show their team spirit...
The World Baseball Classic got under way, with a surprise win for Italy; the Diamondbacks' offense continued to struggle, but Rod Barajas found something unexpected in his wife's shoe. All this, and moving footage of 19th-century baseball.
The D-backs proved unable to d-rail the d-Royals, who remained undefeated this pre-season. Adam Eaton, having been cleated earlier in the week, doled out some of his own back, and there were mixed results for the WBC teams in warn-up action.
The D-backs suffered their first shut-out of the year, being four-hit by Mexico, though there were positives in some good pitching. Cody Ross won't be doing much for a couple of weeks, and Jose Canseco now considers himself an artist...
Yesterday was a good day for the D-backs organization. They got a great start from Brandon McCarthy, a legend returned to camp and one of their affiliates did something definitely worthy of respect.
The third annual Diamondbacks rookies RenFest trip took place on Saturday, with Josh Collmenter taking the lead, and apparently even winning a beard contest! There's some health notes, and we'll be short a few players for WBC reasons this week.
Not quite the start we had been hoping for from Wade Miley, in what wasn't a good day for our starter generally. There was better news on the Didi Gregorius front, and Bud Selig wants to see harsher punishments for PED abusers.
Bad news. David Hernandez will no longer be appearing for the Mexican team in the World Baseball Classic. Good news. He will instead be playing for Team USA.
Posting this in the middle of the night, to act as an impromptu WBC thread, for any insomniacs out there. The first game will already be in the books, but there's Japan vs. Brazil at 3am Arizona time, then Korea vs. the Netherlands at 6am.
A one-run win over the Reds, which improved our record but didn't do much for the D-backs run differential. We look at that, the battle for back-up catcher and get early contenders for Weird Ailment and Catch of the Year.
