D-Backs close to Clark deal

Why?? How will he be used?

this ship has long set sail, why bring it back to port? Can't we actually build from within and for the future instead of trotting out these reruns?

Update, with the basics from the piece

"The Diamondbacks appear to be closing in on a trade with the San Diego Padres that will bring first baseman Tony Clark back to Arizona. After significant discussions in recent days, a deal could be final as soon as today, according to a major league source, who said the Diamondbacks will give up a minor league prospect in the trade.

It appears Clark has agreed to waive his assignment bonus, the $500,000 clause that otherwise would have kicked in when he was traded. The bonus, which served as a form of no-trade protection, was expected to be a hurdle in the negotiations. The Diamondbacks will be responsible for the remainder of Clark's $900,000 salary."

Details and discussion to follow...

Good night, Tiger Stadium

It's been a long time coming, but old Tiger Stadium is finally being dismantled, as the above link with photos and video shows.

I never went to a game there, and though the last two "golden age" stadiums will probably hold on for a long time, it's another blow to a bygone era. I was also looking at pictures at the old Polo Grounds today, and though I like the modern things the new parks afford, I can't help but feel a little bit of magic looking at some of the old parks.

The Defecting Red Sox Fan

Interesting piece by Randy on Over the Monster, in which he discusses his dislike of the bandwagoning Red Sox fans.

"I would predict that the majority of "fans" that enter Fenway Park on a daily basis really can't be considered "fans" at all. They're the people with the money, the connections and the attitude of, "hey, maybe I'll attend the Boston Sox game at Fenway Stadium today."

I'm not saying there is no place for these type of "fans," but there's just too many of them. There were none of them in 2004 until the World Series trophy came home. Now there are millions of them everywhere. Why? They cling to success. The Red Sox are the popular and "cool" thing in New England; who doesn't want to be apart of the cool crowd?

Personally, I hate talking Red Sox or baseball with people that really don't know anything about the Sox or baseball. I can pick a poser fan out of a lineup nine times out of 10. When a poser fan asks my thoughts, I have a standard answer that doesn't divulge any detail of my thoughts because I know they won't understand."

Orlando Hudson Just Striking Out To Crack Up Teammates

PHOENIX—Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Orlando Hudson has been intentionally striking out in an effort to make his teammates laugh, team sources told reporters. Hudson, who struck out in every plate appearance Tuesday against the Oakland A's, was overheard saying "Check this out" to teammates Justin Upton and Chris Young before intentionally taking a third strike during his first at-bat; swinging wildly high and wide at a pitch thrown low and inside; swinging several seconds after the ball had been caught by the catcher for a third strikeout; and during his fourth appearance at the plate, dropping his bat and starting to remove his batting gloves before the pitcher had even thrown the baseball. Upon walking back to the dugout, Hudson reportedly pretended to be disappointed with his performance by yelling, "Jeez, I just don't know what's wrong with me lately," causing his teammates further amusement. Following the game, Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin told Hudson that he could see what Hudson was doing and that he had better cut it out.

Fantasy Baseball Owner Rips Team In Media

I think those playing in the SnakePit league will appreciate the link above.

'Mark Mendicus, 26-year-old Staples employee and principal owner of the fantasy baseball team Beat With Uggla Stick, blasted his underperforming team in the media Monday, going so far as to single out individual players, criticize their recent play, and question their commitment to winning. "The Beat With Uggla Sticks have a proud tradition of winning," continued Mendicus, whose team has made the playoffs the past two years, including a league championship win in 2006. "But apparently that means nothing to this group of players. Apparently they'd rather just lose every single 5x5 category. Apparently my players don't care about winning the 12-team Yahoo! Plus 'Mmm…Fantasy Baseball' league pennant as much as I do."'

Police say Conn. man urged snake to 'get' officers

Sounds like this snake has about as much aggression as our offense of late...

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) — Police in Bridgeport, Conn., say they arrested a man after he ordered his pet to attack two officers. Lucky for them, 9-foot-long pythons aren't very obedient. Police say 21-year-old Victor Rodriguez was charged with threatening officers and disorderly conduct after Monday's incident. No one was hurt.

Police arrived at Rodriguez's apartment after receiving a report that he was threatening his girlfriend with the albino python. After the building's superintendent opened the apartment door for the officers, Rodriguez allegedly threatened them with the snake and told it to "Get them!" Rodriguez and his pet were both taken away: Rodriguez to jail on a $10,000 bond, and the reptile to the city's animal control shelter.
