Gameday Thread, NLDS #1: 10/4 vs. Cubs

Ted Lilly (31, LHP, 15-8, 3.83)
Doug Davis (31, LHP, 13-12, 4.25)

BaseballReference.com preview [opens in new window]

Getting this one up early again, since I'm going to be training all afternoon, and am then heading over the ballpark to meet Al from BCB, and probably a few other Cubs fans for a beer and, probably, a merciless beating with blunt objects before the game. So I will likely be a little late to this party, but I'm sure, after last night's tidal-wave of comments, that this shouldn't be a problem. I remember the days when we were delighted to reach 200 posts on a thread...how long ago that all seems now.

Definitely a key win for Arizona last night, rendering tonight's game virtually a must-win for the Cubs. The pressure will be on them, both from outside and within, and they're likely to come out of the blocks with all guns blazing [a ferociously-mixed metaphor, I must admit]. If the Diamondbacks can hold them at bay for the first couple of innings, or even take the lead themselves, we could begin to see panic break out in the visitor's dugout. Whoever's sitting next to Zambrano had better watch out. :-) Okay, that's the best-case scenario. Much like last night, this promises to be a tough struggle, with both teams giving their all. But our worst-case scenario is losing home-field advantage in a best-of-three series; the Cubs' worst-case scenario is going down 2-0 and facing three elimination games.

As noted previously, Davis did beat the Cubs at Chase earlier in the season, restricting them to one run over seven innings, on six hits and a walk, while striking out a season-high tying eight. We may see Kendall in the lineup tonight, since he's hitting .313 against us: on the other hand, he couldn't throw out bath-water, so if he does start, expect to see us whizzing round the base-paths. The two Cubs with most at-bats against Davis haven't done well in the past (Ramirez 5-for-22; Lee 4-for-22), but Soriano and Jones have had success, while Theriot is 4-for-6. For most D-backs, their first encounter with Lilly was the game in August; only Byrnes (4-for-14) and Clark (5-for-21) have more than ten at-bats.

Let's see how things go tonight. Here's to Davis placing another foot on the Cubs' collective shoulders, and getting us ready to deliver the killing blow on Saturday.

Ferociously-mixed, perhaps...
But track and field WOULD be more interesting if all the runners had guns, not just the starter.

Sheezus
And you guys think your pen guys are scary... Fuentes comes in with one out and nobody on, gives up a hit and two walks, and then Manny Corpas has to come in for a four-out save with the bases loaded, two outs, and a hostile Philly crowd getting on him. He gets a groundball on the second pitch to save the five-run lead, and my heart.

I guess it's just adding to the intrigue.
This way, Corpas can't be one of the 8,000 bullpen pitchers used if the Phillies manage to push this to four games.

The Phillies crowd noise died very abruptly.  Normally, a crowd dies off with that "Awww!" noise of annoyance- these guys sounded like they were looking forward to getting home and reading previews for the 76ers season.

So I've started the
trend in Primer IRC of referring to every good play by Stephen Drew as being the result of his laziness and indifference, in honor of all of those moronic anonymous scout whispering that questioned his work ethic.

It's really fun.  He's our indifference maker!

Cleveland for the Win!
It's becoming increasingly humorous that announcers and commentators are required by law to place the word "fearsome" in front of the phrase "Yankee lineup". This IS the same lineup that has Melky Cabrera and Doug Eye-Chart, right?
our win differential is more important than your run differential...

by dbackerinparadise on Oct 4, 2007 7:30 PM EDT reply actions

How can you not?
968 runs, 100 more than Boston  250 more runs than the Dbacks with maybe the best hitter in the game???  They may be overpaid jerks, but they can hit the sh*t out of the baseball...  There weak links Melky hit over .270 & Doug is in there because they don't need another bat.  (Yet he has been great with his bat anyways, lately).

by cj060896 on Oct 4, 2007 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

truth
I agree with you that they are hitting quite well. Yes, statistically, they have the best offense in baseball. Really, what I was complaining about was the fact that there's a sort of hallowed nature that seems to be conferred on a player simply because they are playing for the Yankees. My real issue was that during the telecast of DBacks/Cubs, the idiots in the booth spent 15-20 minutes (mercifully not longer) waxing poetic about the incredible qualities of the Yankee lineup. Yeah, they're good, but they do have weaknesses and it isn't like they're the invincible masters of the universe that most commentators feel the need to proclaim at every opportunity.
our win differential is more important than your run differential...

by dbackerinparadise on Oct 4, 2007 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep
But take a good luck at that lineup; if there are weaknesses there aren't many.  Averaging almost 6 runs a game, they just might be that good...offensively.  Defensively Damon, Matsui, Abreu, & Cano suck, if they put someone besides Doug at 1st they will suck.  With some pithing at defense that "lineup" probably would have won 110 games.

As I mentioned before big markets & big money get all the publicity.  Hell ESPN still can't figure out how Arizona one.  Every analyst answer is the same, this is how they one all year.  I don't know how they do it.  They are still determined that Arizona is the "least talanted team".  Despite the #'s I don't not feel that answer is so black & white.  Hell they say this & they know very little about most of the players on this team.  That alone should tell you something.

weaknesses
Yeah, the weaknesses, at least in my mind, would be: Cabrera, Mientkiewicz, maybe Damon if you squint, and anybody on the bench not named Shelly Duncan.

A-Rod is 0 for 1.  This guy is the worst hitter in the history of the Yankees.  $25 MILL!  He's not worth $25!

I can't get over how good Webb is. Seriously?!?!  Where did he come from? Was he a minor league prospect with the system or get traded?

Webb
was drafted out of the University of Kentucky by Arizona in 2000; debuted in the majors 2003, starting 28 games.  Despite winning the Cy Young last year, he might not be as well known as he ought to be, since the last playoff appearance for Arizona was the year before he came up.

Webb and Valverde
are just about the only guys left who came up in that 01-03 period; the second wave of Baby-backs is working out better (so far - fingers crossed) than the first.  Hopefully we won't trade half of them for Richie Sexson, not so?

Well, Brandon Webb.  He won the Cy Young last year.  (I almost typed the Cy Webb!)  But of course, he doesn't play for the Yankees or the Red Sox, and the Diamondbacks never win, so he doesn't get as much press as he deserves.   He's been with the big club since 2003, and was in the farm system since 2000.  He's a good one!

Had too sit game one...maybe excited, definitely out of character for him & I'm sure he's kicking himself.  3 - 0 he was probably looking inside for a pitch to drive Byrnes in, after 3 outside...got to take your shots if you get a pitch in the area your looking with 2 outs & a guy on 3rd.  Pitch probably had more late movement than he expected...

ill take teh 4 runs, but....
why do these guys always have the 3-0 green light? I am sure there is a website out there to show teh dbacks AVG this year with 3-0 that can prove me wrong, but it sure feels like they are a paltry group with 3-0. Conor swung at a possible ball 4 that would have had Chase erupting even more...oh well at least I am home for this game and not on a plane wondering how it is going.....

Yes, as a defensive replacement
Every time he has in as a defensive replacement hitting in the 9-hole on a double-switch in the post season, we score AT LEAST 8 runs.

I feel sorry too.
When I went to see Doug Davis beat Ted Lilly, (Last time) I was talking to the Cubs fan behind me during the 9th inning, (when it was already clear the Dbacks would win) and I remarked to him, "It's such a shame that Kerry Wood is coming out of the pen, since he can't stay healthy." His response was, "It's not a shame. When you're a Cubs fan, nothing is a shame. It's all part of a greater plan."

Then I asked him if I could get some of whatever Cubs fans are smoking.

I saved the BCB thread as a threat for later.
It is a delicious dessert. Here's the highlight so far:

"AZ bullpen has feet of clay.  A bunch of so-so pitchers who overachieved all year."

by Azreous on Oct 5, 2007 2:48 AM EDT reply actions

Well
it could be a threat as well.

I just glanced through
the last hundred-odd posts, and dear god... it's like the last scene in a Shakespeare tragedy - bodies everywhere.  You'd think they'd be able to take losing more philosophically after all these years of it.  (Oh, the schadenfreude is so delicious.)

by peachy rex on Oct 5, 2007 3:01 AM EDT up reply actions

No, wait, I can top that.
"Valverde needs someone to smack him....
he really is a showboat and I hope somewhere down the road he has a giant implosion and gives up a tragic blown save....you know, I love how these expansion teams take such joy in beating us when we haven't won in 99 years....they act like we are the Yankees or something...don't get it....why hate the generous Cubbies?"

I just love the irony from start to finish.

by Azreous on Oct 5, 2007 3:00 AM EDT up reply actions

'Why hate the generous Cubbies?'
Hmmm... perhaps because you're completely classless, obnoxious in other teams' stadiums, your team sucks, the entire sports media establishment wants you to win, you just spent $300 million in the offseason to buy a championship, you slipped into the playoffs with 85 wins when the Padres didn't make it with 89, and all you do is whine?

Does anyone else see the cognitive dissonance in this BCB post??

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 5, 2007 3:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh please
Heaven forbid someone be pleased that they win a game- it's obviously something against the Cubs.

And I'd rather have a showboat like Valverde than a loose cannon like Zambrano.

I'm not superstitious- it's bad luck.

Just got back from the game
and my thoughts are:

*Got there at 7 (had to pick up friends in Awautukee) so the only lot I found easily charged $40.  Yikes.

*Felt a bit nervous with that 2 run shot in the second, but I knew the D'backs would come back and punch the Cubs in the mouth.

*Saw a lot of Cubbie blue, but they were definately outnumbered.  I'd say a 70-30 split.

*The crowd was really into the game, at least until the lead became 8-2 and people kind of calmed down for awhile.  When Valverde came in, though, things definately ramped up.

*The Kiss Cam thing with Bartman and the goat was classic.

*Ojeda is my player of the game.  Really just did everything in his power to will us to victory, as did Drew.  I loved that people started doing the "DREEEEEEEEEEEW" thing (to which a group of Cubs fans asked, "are they booing?" to which another person said, "No, they're saying 'Drew.'").  I don't know if anyone heard in other parts of the stadium, but another cool moment was everytime Augie did anything, spontaneous "AU-GIE AU-GIE" chants rang out around my section of the upper deck.  Gave me goosebumps.

*Great win tonight, a hell of a lot of fun.  On to Saturday!

Stay grindy, my friends.

"Which team is more likely to rally from an 0-2 deficit?"

a. Cubs
b. Phillies

ESPN's Diamond Daily
Naturally mentions nothing about the Diamondbacks, but it did have this interesting tidbit:

"* The widow of Colorado Rockies minor league coach Mike Coolbaugh, who died after getting hit by a line drive this season, will be granted a full share of the team's playoff winnings after a team vote. Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said the gesture spoke volumes about the quality of the character in their locker room. Coolbaugh, who is 32 and pregnant, won't attend Saturday's Game 3 of the NLDS between the Phillies and Rockies at Coors Field. But her two sons, Joseph, 5, and Jacob, 3, will be in attendance and will throw out the first pitch. "When I heard about what the players did, I almost cried," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd said. "This was the players' idea. I think it's remarkable." Mike Coolbaugh was a first base coach for the Tulsa Drillers. The former major leaguer was killed July 22."

Good for them.

I noticed that
You'd think that with only four stinking series, you could find something to say about each of them, not so?  But at least we're starting to get some love elsewhere...

Couldn't resist.
Why don't the Cubs have a website?

Because they can't string together 3 W's in a row.

On another note....
Ryan Braun may win ROTY honors this year, (he already has) but might I draw your attention to the numbers:

      Postseason HRs   Postseason SBs
Braun             0                0
Young             1                1

Good win here..
The last inning was more exciting then it should be, but what's a Valverde save without some excitement, eh?

Going into saturday's game however, I can't help but feel less confident... Hernandez 2.0 is pitching after all, though he is either feast or famine. More famine than feast recently though.

Well lets just savour this victory over the off day and look forwards to the next game then.

I don't think Death got a save...
Additionally, I like nice round numbers, and this is now post #900.

Livan
I kind of feel the same as you about Livan, but I am trying to think positive and hope (and pray!) that his reputation as a big game pitcher rears its big beautiful head and that he steps up and comes up big for the team on Saturday.  The Cubs are the ones with their backs to the wall and should be feeling the pressure.

by TwinnerA on Oct 5, 2007 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Such a good feeling
You wake up, not only is it Friday, but you get to spend your day at the office reading through page after page of reports on another D-Backs win, whilst sitting at your desk in a D-Backs jersey (not that anybody has a clue who the DBacks are ;) )

Quick thought.

If we get beat up tomorrow (which im hopefull we wont) are you tempted to go with Webby in game 4?

by Wimb on Oct 5, 2007 8:23 AM EDT reply actions

No way
  1. Zambozo has only ever pitched on 3 days rest once before, and got lit up by the Reds.
  2. Owings has pitched considerably better (as in lights out better) when he's had over 5 days to rest between starts.
  3. At worse we'd be going into game 4 up 2-1.  Save Webby for Game 5 if necessary, as there's no guarantee of what kind of pitcher you'll get after 3 days rest.
Stay grindy, my friends.

by soco on Oct 5, 2007 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

indeed
I've got a great deal of trust in Owings (should've been our #2 starter).  And, if we reach a game 5 the Cubs are going to be really screwed.  It'll either be Lilly on 3 days rest or Marquis.  Might as well just set up a T on home plate for our guys.

by johngordonma on Oct 5, 2007 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions

No way
I've got confidence in Micah- oh, man, I'd love to see him hit a home run off Zambrano.  Plus, worst case scenario, then we've got Webb in Game Five.
I'm not superstitious- it's bad luck.

by kishi on Oct 5, 2007 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

what a great morning!
I really can't believe we won that game.  I'd imagine a slug-fest is going to ensue in game 3, and you can't like our odds at winning a slugfest.  I've got to say, I feel incredibly confident about the series, though.

AL poll
We're all such spineless jellyfish.  25 votes so far and every single one has been cast for Cleveland or Boston.  I hereby rescind my vote for Boston and stick with who I said from the start: the Yankees (even though that just made me puke a little bit in my mouth).

by johngordonma on Oct 5, 2007 11:00 AM EDT reply actions

I'm not a spineless jellyfish
it's just hard to imagine the yankees winning after getting so roundly thumped yesterday.

by andrewinnewyork on Oct 5, 2007 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I voted the Tribe
as I think they have the ability to get there (pitching is the key in the playoffs) and mainly because if the D'backs had to face an AL team I think I like our chances more with Cleveland.
Stay grindy, my friends.

Enjoy that puke & expect to lose my friend...
Actually, now that no one will read this since many more threads are occupying everyone's curiousity at the moment.  Even though Cleveland looks mighty good right now and you can never rule out the Yankees, I still think the Red Sox will be victorious. They are on a mission and have you seen their September rookie call-ups like Jacoby Ellsbury and Clay Buchholz.  Unbelievable.  They are stronger than they have ever been this year (with the exception of Wakefield.)  An AZ-BOS WS would be a great series.

by batster on Oct 5, 2007 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmmm.... the Indians are so much more compelling!
Boston-AZ WS would be interesting... as far as I can remember, we're 4-2 all time against the Red Sox; that includes the 1-2 series this year at Chase, and sweeping the Sox 3-0 in '02 at Fenway. I'm sure we've played them more times than that, but I don't recall it, and I'm too lazy to go look it up.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.
