Matt Koch had another good start for the Diamondbacks, and will certainly be in consideration for a look come next spring. He worked six innings and allowed a run on five hits, with no walks and three strikeouts. However, as last time, he got a no-decision, the offense not able to give him much support. Arizona did get on the board first, with a Chris Owings RBI groundout in the second, but San Diego tied things up in the fourth, and took the lead against Steve Hathaway, after he replaced Koch, in the seventh inning. However, Silvino Bracho and Randall Delgado stopped the bleeding there.
Meanwhile, Brandon Drury’s 16th homer of the season in the eighth inning, tied the game up, a pair of appeals proved critical in the ninth. Initially, Daniel Hudson was ruled to have allowed the Padres to retake the lead, but the call was changed to a foul ball. And in the bottom half, the visitors appealed Tuffy Gosewisch’s double, saying he didn’t touch the bag, but that was denied, and Phil Gosselin ended the game with a walk-off RBI single. The win went to Hudson in possibly his last game for Arizona. It gave the D-backs the season series, fourth place in the division and means they will pick seventh in the draft next June.
