Robbie Ray has been the best Diamondbacks starting pitcher this year. Sure, that's not a high bar to clear, but having an ERA and FIP under 3 is good no matter how you slice it, and he had another good outing today. But first, runs!
Paul Goldschmidt hit a dinger, as he does, in the 1st to make it 1-0 Diamondbacks off of Mariners starter Mike Montgomery. Welington Castillo followed with another solo shot in the 2nd to make it 2-0. In case you forgot, Castillo was acquired from the Mariners in the Mark Trumbo deal, so that was nice. The Diamondbacks got a third run when Brad Miller committed an error in the same 2nd inning which allowed Jake Lamb to score easily with the bases loaded to make it 3-0.
Also of note in the 2nd inning, Ender Inciarte robbed Mike Zunino of at least extra bases and possibly a homer on a leaping catch on the fence. That was nice.
The Mariners chipped back, kinda. Logan Morrison singled home the aforementioned Trumbo (Who got probably his first two ever hits as a Mariner tonight) in the 5th to make it 3-1. Robinson Cano hit a solo shot on a hanging slider from Ray into right field to make it 3-2.
Ray, however, beared down some, and got through 7 innings. His final line: 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 K. That'll do fine.
The Diamondbacks offense couldn't muster much against various Seattle pitching (Montgomery after the 2nd, Fernando Rodney, J.A. Happ.) Randall Delgado came for the 8th and got a clean inning. Daniel Hudson came in for the save, with Brad Ziegler unavailable, He gave up a leadoff walk to Cano, but got Seth Smith to ground into a double play.
However, Mark Trumbo got his third hit of the night on a double off of Hudson. Chip Hale lifted Hudson for Oliver Perez to face Logan Morrison, who despite the earlier single off of Ray earlier, has a slash of Tire Fire/Pestilence/Adam Sandler Movies against lefties.
Perez got Morrison to... walk. What's even better is that a cross up with Castillo made the ball go not into the catcher's glove and allowed pinch runner Chris Taylor to advance to third. This became important because... Mike Zunino, who is terrible against all things, got a base hit to tie the game. Ollie did get the final out, so he has that going for him.
Carson Smith came in for the Mariners to start the 10th. He walked Goldy, struck out A.J. Pollock looking on the most center cut pitch of all time. He walked Aaron Hill and hit Welington Castillo with a pitch in the exact same spot he was hit the other day against Milwaukee, which hooray. With the bases loaded and one out, old friend Vidal Nuno came into the game against hometown guy Jake Lamb. Lamb hit a deep enough fly ball to score Goldy to make it 4-3. That was all the damage the Diamondbacks did that inning, and all without a single hit.
Andrew Chafin came in for take two of the save thing. He got Austin Jackson to ground out, but gave up a hit to Kyle Seager. Nelson Cruz got a slow roller to third to move Seager into scoring position with two outs. They then walked Robinson Cano intentionally to get to Seth Smith, who struck out for a Diamondbacks win.
Also of note, Salty, just off the DL, came in for Castillo in the last frame. No word on Welington's condition.
Of worth: Goldy +26.7%
Shamed their ancestors: Perez, -37.8%

Relax everyone, Ollie's got this
Good depth often has to come from within, in the form of younger talent. Depth is hard to build overnight, but it’s easy to deplete.: Jeff Sullivan STAY THE COURSE
It's funny cause he didn't got it.
Same two teams tomorrow, if you're into that.
