There has been recent talk about the Diamondbacks 40 man roster for the offseason, and what that means for Jake Lamb, and Rule V draft. So I decided to take a look at what those are and decided to share that info I have found with you.
Currently the Diamondbacks have 36 player on the 40 man roster: Chase Anderson, Bronson Arroyo, Mike Bolsinger, Charles Brewer, Trevor Cahill, Josh Collmenter, Eury De La Rosa, Randall Delgado, Will Harris, David Hernandez, Daniel Hudson, Evan Marshall, Wade Miley, Vidal Nuno, Joe Paterson, Oliver Perez, Addison Reed, Bo Schultz, Matt Stites, Brad Ziegler, Tuffy Gosewisch, Miguel Montero, Jordan Pacheco, Nick Ahmed, Paul Goldschmidt, Didi Gregorius, Aaron Hill, Andy Marte, Chris Owings, Cliff Pennington, Ender Inciarte, Roger Kieschnick, Alfredo Marte, David Peralta, A.J. Pollock, Cody Ross, Mark Trumbo.
With 4 more players currently on the 60-day DL: Patrick Corbin, David Hernandez, Daniel Hudson, and Matt Reynolds, which need to be accounted for later in the off-season.
So that makes 40 players, and all of them either are under contract for next year, or have less than 6 years of service time. There are some players I think that more or less the Diamondbacks could let go and/or try to retain as non-roster invites next year: Brewer, Paterson, Spruill, both Marte, Kieschnick. That is 6 players. Now Pennington is an interesting case, since he is a duplicate player, but would still have some value to clubs, so I assumed for now they want to keep him but that is one more possible spot that could be opened. Schultz and Bolsinger are 2 other spots that could be opened, that I was on the fence of keeping, and decided that keeping them for pitcher depth made sense.
Now in the offseason some player will need to be added to protect from the Rule V draft: Andrew Chafin, Kevin Munson, Zach Borenstein, Cody Wheeler, Brandon Drury, and A.J. Schugel, Now those were the 6 names to me that could need protection, but they could be other names, or add more as well.
By releasing the 6 listed players, and protecting the 6 players from the Rule V draft, they would be back at 40 roster spots.
Now there are two other players which need to be discussed as well, in Archie Bradley and, Jake Lamb. If they are going to see time in September which there has been discussion here about each coming up they need to be accounted for as well.
The easiest way for me to see would be to let one of Bolsinger or Schultz go, plus Pennington to make room for them as well, or they could protect 2 less players. Also trading away 2 players during the rest of this month and as long as they receive no other players back that need to be on the 40-man roster to open the space needed. Now the player most likely for that would be Reed, Perez, and Hill.
Any other players that you think should be protected, other moves, post your thoughts below.
