Diamondbacks 4, Marlins 3

Ralph Freso

Stop me if you've heard this one before. A great performance by our starting pitcher was all for naught, as a feeble offense and two-run inning from a reliever cost the Diamondbacks the game. But, plot twist!

The victim today was Josh Collmenter, who gave us another sterling outing, allowing one run over seven innings, scattering seven hits and a walk. He struck out six and threw 103 pitches. After Matt Stites worked a scoreless eighth, Brad Ziegler came in, taking the game into extras. However, the dubious choice to send him out there for a second inning backfired on Kirk Gibson, as did the decision to call for an intentional walk with the go-ahead run on second, but first-base open. The next batter ripped a double which scored both baserunners, and the Marlins took a 3-1 lead.

The Diamondbacks offense was stymied by Nathan Eovaldi over the first six innings, managing only an infield single by Gregorius as far as hits went. They finally got on the board in the eighth, tying the game after a lead-off triple by Didi Gregorius, as he came home on a Nick Ahmed single. They then did have their opportunities to take the lead, but weren't able to do anything, until the 10th. Aaron Hill singled, Ender Inciarte walked, David Peralta got an RBI single, and Paul Goldschmidt then walked us off with a two-run double, and had now reached base in 30 straight games.

Be right back, I've got some major rewriting of the full recap to do. :)
