Through four innings, things were actually going pretty well, with Martin Prado's RBI single in the first giving Arizona a lead, and Vidal Nuno extending his scoreless streak to open time with the Diamondbacks to 11 innings. Sure, we had a silly TOOTBLAN by Ender Inciarte, but still... Then, Nuño melted down, first loading the bases in the fifth, and then letting Buster Posey unload them with a grand-slam.
Worse was to follow in the fifth: more base-running gaffes doomed a comeback effort, and in the bottom half, Matt Stites loaded the bases, with the help of some defensive gaffes, only for Madison Bumgarner to unload them, with his second grand-slam of the year [he now has one more than Pete Rose!] Stites is only the second pitcher in team history to allow a grand-slam to his opposite number. I'm not allowed to say who the other was. :)
Arizona did make an effort to come back, with Cody Ross hitting a two-run shot, and Nick Evans getting an RBI double, but it was too little, too late. Paul Goldschmidt's on-base streak also ended this afternoon, as he went 0-for-4. Prado had three hits, with two apiece for Enciarte and Ahmed.
Next up, the All-Star Game. Diamondbacks baseball resumes on Friday, with a series back at Chase against the Cubs.
