Diamondbacks 6, Braves 5

Norm Hall

As we entered the ninth inning last night, you'd have got long odds on the Diamondbacks winning the series. But thanks to more late-inning heroics, we pulled it out again this afternoon. Chase Anderson and David Peralta extended their club-record career starting streaks

Chase Anderson improved to 5-0, the first pitcher to start their career with five consecutive wins since Jered Weaver for the 2006 Angels. He held the Braves scoreless through the first five innings, before giving up a long, two-run homer, to some guy Atlanta has called "Justin Upton." We may hear more about this young man. Anderson finished with a very solid line of two runs over seven innings, on five hits and a walk, with eight strikeouts. However, he left in line for the loss, because the offense was more or less incapable of doing anything against Aaron Harang. A bases-loaded, no out chance in the fifth was the closest, but died on a Gerardo Parra double-play.

However, a six-run seventh propelled the D-backs back into the lead. David Peralta had his first home-run, a two-run shot to tie things up; he became the first Arizona batter to hit safely in their first seven games. Chris Owings punched a two-run single through the infield to give the home team the lead, and then Paul Goldschmidt happened, for the 12th time this year. Joe Thatcher and Evan Marshall made it interesting, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks in the eighth, but Marshall finally stranded the bases loaded. Brad Ziegler made it a one-run game with his first pitch of the ninth, but then retired the next three for a nerve-wracking win.

All this, and Bronson Arroyo scoring as a pinch-runner. Xipooo will be along later with the recap, but that might be a bit, as he's out and will be 'capping via DVR. Pro-tip: fast forward to the seventh-inning stretch. That's when the good stuff (Chase Anderson aside!) starts... We now await the arrival of the Astros, for a quick two here and two there set to start the week.
