D-backs Select Stites, Option Campana and Transfer Hudson to 60-Day Disabled List

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona Diamondbacks selected right-handed pitcher Matt Stites from Triple-A Reno and optioned outfielder Tony Campana to Reno. In addition, the D-backs transferred right-handed pitcher Daniel Hudson to the 60-day disabled list, according to D-backs’ Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

Stites, 24, will wear No. 37 and be making his Major League debut. He went 0-1 with 15 saves and a 2.89 ERA (9 ER in 28.0 IP) in 29 games between Double-A Mobile and Triple-A Reno this season. He did not allow an earned run in his first 11 appearances (10.1 IP) since his promotion to Reno on May 6 and converted all 12 of his save opportunities. He last pitched on June 15 @ Memphis and recorded the save with a scoreless inning.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pound pitcher entered the season rated by Baseball America as possessing the Best Control among Arizona farmhands and as the organization's No. 9 Prospect. Over 4 Minor League seasons between Arizona (2014) and San Diego (2011-13), he has gone 8-3 with 47 saves and a 1.76 ERA (32 ER in 163.1 IP) in 143 games (all in relief). Stites was tabbed by Baseball America as the Best Reliever in the Texas League following the 2013 season.

The Festus, Mo. native was drafted by the Padres in the 17th round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft. Stites was acquired from San Diego along with left-handed pitcher Joe Thatcher and a Competitive Balance Lottery Pick (No. 69 overall selection, outfielder Marcus Williams) on July 31, 2013 for right-handed pitcher Ian Kennedy.

Campana, 28, had his first career walk-off hit with a game-winning single in last night's 4-3 win vs. Brewers. In 26 games for the D-backs this year, he has hit .150 (9-for-60) with 1 double, 1 triple, 4 stolen bases and 4 runs scored. Hudson, 27, missed the entire 2013 season after re-tearing his ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on March 30. The D-backs' 40-man roster remains at 40.
