Diamondbacks 3, Dodgers 4

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

There would be no 6-0 for Chase Anderson; one mistake to Matt Kemp doomed him to the first defeat of his major-league career, and the Arizona bullpen wasn't much help either.

Anderson didn't exactly pitch that badly, except for the first four batters he faced in the second inning, who all reached base - only one of them with a hit. Unfortunately, that hit was a two-run homer to Matt Kemp, though credit Anderson for working out of the inning without further damage. He wobbled his way through five innings, allowing just those two runs, on four hits and four walks, with four strikeouts, but required 100 pitches to get there. Our relievers were unimpressive, Oliver Perez, Will Harris and Evan Marshall allowing two runs in three innings, on a total of six hits and two walks, and those late runs proved crucial.

The Diamondbacks offense didn't do nearly as well as they had against Kershaw at Chase Field, with just an RBI single by Aaron Hill, scoring Chris Owings, in the way of productive offense. We did pull within one run in the eighth, on Tuffy Gosewisch's third hit of the night, though the bullpen immediately handed the run back. Kenley Jansen came in to close things out for the Dodgers, but Gerardo Parra singled, Paul Goldschmidt walked and Hill singled to make it a one-run game, with two on and one out. But Martin Prado struck out on a foul tip, and Cody Ross... Well, I needn't draw you a picture.

It's back to Dodger Stadium tomorrow night, as Josh Collmenter takes on Dan Haren. I'm off to the Mad Monster Party in downtown Phoenix, to hang out with Roddy Piper and Brad Dourif, so please be aware, it'll be a while before the full recap appears...
