Game #59: Diamondbacks vs. Reds

Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

This time yesterday, David Peralta was playing Double-A ball, eating Double-A food and living in Double-A accommodations, without a care in the world. Today, he starts in left field for the Arizona Diamondbacks, making his major-league debut.

Well, at least if we need an emergency pitcher, we know who it'll be. Because that's how Peralta was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals, all the way back in 2006. He made 19 appearances for them on the mound, including 10 starts, posting a 2-6 record with a 5.60 ERA, before re-inventing himself as a hitter. He returned to the minor leagues in 2011, with the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings of the independent North American League, and hit .392 with 17 home-runs in only 85 games. That got him attention at a higher level of indie ball, and he played in 2012 for the Wichita Wingnuts in the American Association.

He then started 2013 with the Amarillo Sox in the same league, but the Diamondbacks then bought his contract and put him with High-A Visalia, where he tore thing up, hitting .346 with eight home-runs in 51 games, This season saw him in Double-A Mobile, and his line there is a solid .297/.359/.480 with six home-runs in 53 games. John and I have certainly mentioned his name often enough when writing up the minor-league recaps, but I was thinking we'd probably see him as a call up to Reno, rather than skipping Triple-A entirely and coming straight to the majors! Even though this is his ninth season in the game, one way or another, he is still only 26, so keen to see what he can do.
