Game #34: Diamondbacks @ Padres

Christian Petersen

The Diamondbacks have a chance to pick up their first sweep of the season, on the road in San Diego this afternoon. I know what a "swept" is, but am really not sure about a "sweep"...

Wade Miley
LHP, 2-3, 5.36

Tyson Ross
RHP, 3-3, 3.68

Diamondbacks Lineup

  1. Gerardo Parra - RF
  2. Martin Prado - 3B
  3. Paul Goldschmidt - 1B
  4. Aaron Hill - 2B
  5. Chris Owings - SS
  6. Cody Ross - LF
  7. Ender Inciarte - CF
  8. Tuffy Gosewisch - C
  9. Wade Miley - P

Early on, Miley was the closest thing we had to a decent starting pitcher, giving us a 4.05 ERA through his first three starts. But the results since then have been pretty bad: over his last four appearances, Miley's ERA is 6.55, with opposing hitters having a .941 OPS against him. Most of that is because he has allowed five home-runs in 22 innings, so there's reason to hope Petco will prove an analgesic in that department. The last time he pitched there, in September 2013, he worked six shutout innings. In June that year,. he allowed one earned run over six - despite giving up two home-runs. I'll leave it up to you to work out how that's possible.

The offense did perform a bit better last night - just enough to deliver half-off pizza for a third consecutive day, but we were kept in a state of tacolessness for a ninth straight game. More than six weeks since Opening Day, and we've scored six runs once per week so far - after 33 games last year, we had almost twice as many free lunches (* with the purchase of a large drink, at participating outlets, between 4 and 6pm the next day), having reached the mark eleven times. Taco Eve has been a particularly cruel mistress thus far, the Diamondbacks having scored five runs on ten separate occasions.

A.J. Pollock out for a fourth consecutive game, looks like his groin is still bothering him,  but Ross is back in right field (Gambo is hovering over his Twttier account in readiness), replacing Alfredo Marte. So you can put away all those "Marte like it's 1999" comments for the afternoon. Despite being the hottest hitter on the team over the past couple of weeks, Miguel Montero also gets a rest, what with it being a day game after a night one. Gibson apparently wrestled with that one, but decided the long view was best. Hopefully, it won't impact the output from our offense too much.
