Diamondbacks 2, Padres 0

Denis Poroy

Bronson Arroyo pitched seven shutout innings, and Aaron Hill came through with a two-RBI single in the third inning, as the D-backs took the first game of the road-trip, three-hitting the Padres at Petco.

The last time Bronson Arroyo pitched in Petco, he threw a complete-game three-hit shutout. He had a little bit of help this time, from Brad Ziegler and Addison Reed, but the outcome was exactly the same. The Padres were flummoxed entirely by Arroyo's brand of wizardry, and he held them to three hits, all singles, and one walk over seven innings, with six strikeouts. He now is working on an ongoing scoreless streak of 16 innings at Petco Park. He could perhaps have gone deeper, having thrown only 91 pitches, but Kirk Gibson went to the bullpen, who were impeccable. Ziegler worked a perfect eighth, and Addison Reed picked up his seventh save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Arizona weren't exactly dominant against the Padres' Andrew Cashner - indeed, they only had one hit with a runner in scoring position all night. But it was a big one, after the bases were loaded by walks to Gerardo Parra and Miguel Montero, around a Paul Goldschmidt single. Aaron Hill dropped an 0-1 pitch into left center, scoring all the runs the Diamondbacks would get, or indeed, need. Hill had another hit, while Parra and Cody Ross reached base twice, each with a hit and a walk. Debutant Ender Inciarte also got his name in the plus column, singling for his first major-league hit in the ninth.

Turambar will be along in a little while with a surprisingly happy and upbeat Beercap. I'd expect karaoke...
