Diamondbacks 0, Cardinals 5: Perfectly Bad

Jeff Curry

Adam Wainwright was almost perfect, and the Dbacks were... not.

Record: 18-28, On Pace: 63-99, Change on '04/'10/'13: +1/-2/-8

Adam Wainwright was the story of the night by far. It took twelve Diamondback hitters before they got a hit. In that first twelve batters, they recorded four strike outs, and only got one ball out of the infield. The tweleth man to bat, Paul Goldschmidt, got a two-out double, but that was it. That was the only time a Dbacks player reached base in the entire game. Over nine innings, Wainwright only gave up that one hit, no walks, and nine strike outs. With the opposition dominating like that, the Dbacks really stood no chance.

Bronson Arroyo was much less dominating than Wainwright. In fact, he really didn't dominate at all. Actually, for the first two outs of each inning, he did really well. If you take out all the offense the Cardinals on the second out, we're talking about a game that's tied at zero basically all the way. Sadly, the inning doesn't end after two outs, so we lost badly.

Unlike the Dbacks, the Cardinals didn't waste much time at all getting thing started. With two outs in the first, Matt Holiday got on base with a single, and was quickly brought home by a Matt Adams home run to make the score 0-2 Cards early on. Again with two outs in the fourth, Jhonny Peralta brought home Yadier Molina to make the score 0-3. Matt Holiday raised the deficit to four runs with a two-out RBI single in the fifth, and the final blow came with two outs in the sixth, courtesy of a solo home run, again from Jhonny Peralta. Arroyo went seven innings, gave up nine hits, two of which were home runs, five earned runs, but did get six strike outs. Trevor Cahill pitched the eighth, and sat the side down without and further runs scoring.
