Dbacks MiLB Round-Up 5/18: The Larussa Effect?

The offenses exploded for all four affiliates yesterday to go along with the Dbacks mini-winning streak since Tony Larussa was hired. The four teams combined for 47 runs on 52 hits that included 14 doubles, 3 triples and 8 home runs. Eight different players had at least 3 hits, which makes it tough to come up with the stars award winners.

AAA: Reno 17 Salt Lake 11. The Aces scored 5 times in each of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings with an offensive onslaught featuring 7 RBI from Mike Jacobs via a double and a home run. Didi Gregorius went 4 for 5 with 4 runs scored. Nick Evans went 3 for 4 with 4 runs scored, 2 doubles and 3 RBI. And Nick Ahmed went 3 for 5 to raise his BA above .300 and his OPS to .742. Charles Brewer started and tried to stick around to get the win behind the run explosion but he was ultimately knocked out in the 5th after giving up 10 runs.

AA: Mobile 8 Chatanooga 1. Andrew Chafin had another sparkling outing pitching 7 strong innings allowing just a solo home run while striking out 7. The offense scored 8 runs on just 4 hits as they collected 9 walks in the game. All four of those hits were for extra bases though as Rawilly Gomez hit a 2-run double, Mike Freeman hit a 2-run homer, Sean Jamieson hit a solo homer, and David Peralta had a triple. Seth Simmons made his first appearance for Mobile with a clean 9th inning.

A+: Visalia 11 San Jose 3. The Rawhide scored 3 runs in the first inning and 3 more in the second and were never threatened after that. Spencer Arroyo gave the bullpen some needed rest with 8 solid innings allowing 3 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks. Ryan Court went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI while Raul Navarro went 2 for 5 with 2 RBI. Brandon Jacobs added a 3-run homer after the game was decided in the 7th and Evan Marzilli followed with a solo shot, his 5th.

A: South Bend 11 Fort Wayne 10. The Silver Hawks won a wild back and forth affair when Daniel Palka delivered a run-scoring single in the bottom of the 9th for some walk-off action. The offense battled from behind on four different occasions in support of Sean Furney who gave up the lead every chance he got. Tom Jameson calmed things down with 3 shutout innings of relief before Jamie Westbrook hit the second of his 2 home runs to give the team a 9-8 leading going into the 9th. But Will Locante couldn't seal the deal and allowed 2 runs in the 9th to set up the 4th and final comeback in the 9th. Westbrook had a big day with 2 home runs and 3 RBI. Chuck Taylor and B.J. Lopez each had 3 hits on the night and Steve McQuail hit his 4th home run.
