Game #43: Diamondbacks vs. Nationals

Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

What? We won a home game? Shurely shome mishtake... That mean, this afternoon we go for an unprecedented feat in the 2014 campaign - back-to-back victories at Chase.

Having made our way through the nastier parts of the Washington rotation, today may represent a bit of a break, considering Fister is just coming back from a lat strain which sidelined him up until last week. His first outing was pretty rocking, as he couldn't locate his pitches and paid the price, allowing seven runs (two unearned) in 4.1 innings, including three homers. Of course, McCarthy's last outing was no great shakes - he allowed the same number of runs in a single inning, continuing the pattern we've seen a lot this year, where he looks untouchable for a while, then collapses into full-on, gurgling vortex of suck mode.

On the plus side, the bullpen will have received a nice break last night, their first full game spent sitting around there, doing whatever relievers do when they're sitting around there. I'm not sure what that is. It doesn't seem like a great angle from which to watch the game, since you're 400 feet or so from home plate, and at the level of the ground. Kinda hard to discern hitter tendencies much from there, compared to the dugout. Go over scouting reports? Do sudoku puzzles? I dunno. Maybe I should ask on Twitter about that. Does make me wonder why the tradition is for the relievers to be kept separately. Seems like baseball apartheid to me.

Same line-up, position wise, for the Diamondbacks as last night. Be nice if they could generate some tacos for the local fans today (okay, technically, tomorrow, between the hours of 4-6, etc. etc.). It's been a while: the last time at Chase was 12 home games ago, all the way back on April 13, and those were crappy, losing tacos, which I'm sure taste of bitter defeat. You want winning home tacos? Hasn't happened this year at all. Three of the four wins, we were stranded by the harsh mistress which is Taco Eve, and last night we were only at 50% of Taconess. Not that I ever eat them, but I do enjoy what they represent.
