Dbacks MiLB Round-Up 4/24: Jacobs Jacks Two

Ralph Freso

Pitching prospect Braden Shipley took a no-hitter into the seventh, while Visalia had a wild encounter in San Jose, and Randy Wolf got the W for the Reno Aces, as team-mate Mike Jacobs went deep twice.

In some ways, it's a shame it's the D-backs outfield depth which has been tested early, with Tony Campana and Roger Kieschnick getting the call, when someone else has been putting up far more impressive numbers in Reno. That would be 1B Mike Jacobs, who homered twice for the Aces tonight, and is now hitting .392 for the season, with an OPS around 1.050 if my math is right. On the other hand, if Jacobs got the call, that would probably mean something had happened to Goldie: so, on second thoughts, forget I said anything.,,

Triple A: Reno 6, Salt Lake 1. Randy Wolf started for the Aces and, after allowing a home-run to the game's first batter, was solid, holding the Bees to just that one run in six innings of work. He scattered five hits and three walks, with four strikeouts, and threw 104 pitches. DH Nick Evans and 1B Mike Jacobs went back-to-back as part of a four-run third, and Jacobs then added a solo shot in the fifth. He had three hits on the evening, while Jacobs also doubled. with two-hit nights for 2B Nick Ahmed and 3B Andy Marte. Evan Marshall worked another scoreless inning of relief, and has yet to allow a run over ten games and 11.2 innings of work.

Double A: Mobile 8, Jackson 3. The BayBears got on the board with a two-run first but the Generals reeled them back in, scoring in the fourth, fifth and sixth to take a 3-2 lead. However, Mobile tied things up on a run-scoring double-play ball by RF Jordan Parraz, and broke the game open with a five-run eighth, highlighted by a two-run double, also from Parraz. LF David Peralta continued to be hot, getting three of their 14 hits and scoring three times; 1B Jon Griffin also had three hits. Starter A.J. Schugel allowed two runs over five innings on five hits; reliever Blake Cooper got the W for two scoreless innings of relief.

High A: Visalia 9 @ San Jose 10. Hey, can't win 'em all. And the Rawhide certainly didn't make it easy to win this one, trailing 10-1 after three innings, after starter Brandon Sinnery imploded, facing 22 batters and retiring only eight. He was charged with 10 runs in 2.2 frames. But Visalia didn't go down without a fight, scoring seven in the fifth and sixth. 3B Brandon Drury then homered to lead off the ninth, making the score 10-9, and the Rawhide had the tying run on third with one out, but just couldn't get it home. CF Evan Marzilli and C Ronnie Freeman each had three hits; Henry Garcia and Keith Hessler combined for 5.1 scoreless innings out of the pen.

A: South Bend 1 Dayton 3. Another tight game here, the sides combining for only five hits. Each side committed two errors and it was the Silver Hawks' which were decisive, both coming in the Dragons' three-run seventh. Braden Shipley had been great to that point, throwing a no-hitter through six (the only baserunner was a hit batter, erased by a double play), but was condemned by his defense. He worked 6.1 innings, allowed three runs, one earned, on two hits and no walks, with six strikeouts. South Bend scored their only run on a wild pitch in the third, and went 0-for-9 with RISP, leaving ten men on base, thanks largely to seven walks.
