Diamondbacks 5, Giants 4

Ralph Freso

The Arizona Diamondbacks claimed their first win of the 2014 season. But it wasn't pretty and it wasn't easy., as they had to claw their way out of a four-run first inning deficit.

Wade Miley dug the team a deep hole right away, as a three-run homer by Brandon Belt powered San Francisco to a four-run first inning, before Arizxona even got to the plate. However, the home team chipped away, scoring two runs right away in the bottom of the first, then a crucial run in the fourth when A.J. Pollock came home on a passed ball. Replay indicated he was tagged out by the pitcher, but Bruce Bochy had burned his appeal earlier the inning on a pickoff of Pollock at first, so there was nothing he could do. Pollock then drove in the tying run in the sixth, and scored the go-ahead run. A.J. broke his ohfer in no uncertain manner, getting three hits and scoring twice.

After the first, Miley was excellent, retiring 15 in a row and not allowing another hit until the seventh. Will Harris was an interesting choice for the eighth inning, and got crucial strikeouts of Buster Posey and Gregor Blanco to keep us in the lead. Addison Reed came in after taking the loss in last night's game, for his first save opportunity, and after a leadoff K, Chris Owings over-ran a pop fly down the third-base line for a double. But a foul-out to Miguel Montero and another strikeout locked things down, and Arizona held on for an excellent comeback victory. Paul Goldscmidt, Gerardo Parra and Owings each had two hits: Goldie thus extended his hitting streak to 23 games.

Full recap to follow in a bit. I might have a lie-down in a dark room first.
