We've been talking about all the upper level pitchers who have started off the season on fire, well add A.J. Schugel's name to the list. Schugel had another fine outing going 6+ innings allowing just one run on 2 hits with 6 strikeouts. In his first 12 innings for Mobile Schugel has allowed just 2 runs on 5 hits with 15 strikeouts and 3 walks. We mentioned after his last outing that if he kept this up he'll be getting another go at the PCL where he had a rough go of it last year. That's appearing to be closer to reality now, plus Mobile is going to need to open up a rotation spot for Andrew Barbosa soon. But with the arrival of Randy Wolf in Reno there might not be room at the inn just yet. Stay tuned, some shuffling may be coming along soon.
3 Stars: A.J. Schugel, Mobile 6.2 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 ER
2 Stars: Ender Inciarte, Reno 3 for 4, 1 BB, 3 R, 1 DBL, 1 SB (5)
1 Star: Colin Bray, South Bend 3 for 4, 1 DBL, 2 RBI, 1 SB (2)
0 Stars: Austin Platt, South Bend 4.2 IP, 7 H, 4 BB, 3 K, 6 ER, 4 HR
Triple A: Reno 6 @ El Paso 4. Alex Sanabia got bounced around a but departing in the 4th inning. But everyone after him was terrific and held the Chihuahuas in check the rest of the way. Derek Eitel put in 2+ innings to earn the win. Evan Marshall added another scoreless inning and has yet to allow a run in his first six games. Kevin Munson inserted a perfect 8th with 2 strikeouts and Jess Todd struck out the side in the 9th for his first save. Ender Inciarte was the spark plug with 3 hits, 3 runs scored and his 5th stolen base. Didi had 2 more hits with a double and an RBI and Cody Ross went 2 for 4. Ross will likely be called up this week.
Double A: Mobile 2 Montgomery 1. Jordan Parraz gave the Bay Bears a walk-off win with a solo home run in the bottom of the 9th. A.J. Schugel led the way with another excellent start allowing just 1 run on 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6. Kaleb Fleck pitched the final two innings and earned the win while striking out 3.
High A: Visalia 7 @ Stockton 4. Andrew Barbosa put up another good start going 5 strong innings allowing just a pair of solo home runs. He struck out 5 and now has 28 strikeouts in 16 innings. Alex Glenn went 3 for 4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored to lead the 9-hit attack.
A: South Bend 7 Wisconsin 11. Austin Platt got rocked for 4 home runs in 4+ innings and Ben Eckels was no better allowing 5 runs on 3 hits and 4 walks in 2+ innings. The offense tried to rally but it was too much to overcome. Colin Bray went 3 for 4 with a double and a stolen base, Andrew Velazquez had a pair of hits including a triple, and Joe Munoz went 2 for 4 with a walk and raised his average to .343.
